During the Liberation War, he served as the Commander of the Third Column of the Central Plains Field Army, and successively participated in the campaigns of Shangdang, Handan, Southwest Lu, March into Dabie Mountain, Huaihai, Crossing the River, and Liberating Southwest China.
In February 1949, he became commander of the reorganized Third Corps of the Second Field Army.
