In 1943, the Battle of Changde broke out, 100,000 Japanese troops attacked Changde, the Kuomintang sent 210,000 people to meet the battle, and finally eliminated 10,000 Japanese troops, which was of great significance in the entire War of Resistance and even in World War II.
This battle demonstrated the combat effectiveness of the Chinese army, and the famous generals such as Sun Lianzhong, Li Yutang, Wang Jingzhi and others, as well as some generals, were sacrificed.
Peng Shiliang was a major general in the Army, and served as the commander of the Provisional 5th Division at the time of his death. In 1937, the 83rd Division went north to resist the Japanese, and the deputy division commander Fu Zhengmo recommended Peng Shiliang as the colonel of the 3rd Regiment of the Supplementary Army. When the Battle of Changde broke out in 1943, Peng Shiliang was the commander of the Provisional 5th Division, blocking the Japanese army in the Shimen area.
The Provisional 5th Division had 5,000 men, but the Japanese army had 30,000 men, and the weapons and equipment were far superior to his, so this battle was destined to be difficult. However, Peng Shiliang was not afraid at all, and the Japanese used aircraft to carry out intensive bombardment of his position, and he did not order a retreat.
In the end, the Japanese army was mad and dropped a poison gas bomb, so Peng Shiliang still held his position. The Japanese army has more and more troops, and gradually formed a siege trend, and the situation is very unfavorable to the Provisional 5th Division.
In order to preserve his strength, his superiors ordered Peng Shiliang to retreat, in order to allow the large troops to retreat smoothly, Peng Shiliang said that he would stay behind, but he could command less than 2,000 soldiers, and the Japanese army sent tens of thousands of people, which was a battle with no return.
He led his troops to hold out in the Shimen area for eight days and eight nights, and finally all the people were exhausted, only a dozen soldiers were left, he decided to break through, and in the battle, he was hit by a stray bullet of the Japanese army and died on the spot, only 39 years old.
After Peng Shiliang's death, the soldiers found two suicide notes from his pockets, one to his wife and the other to his officers and soldiers.
He told his wife to be thrifty, take good care of his parents, raise his children to adulthood, and inherit his legacy. He told the officers and men that he had long been prepared to repay the country with his death, and he had no regrets about dying in battle. After his death, the deputy division commander took command of him, continued to fight with the Japanese army, and completed the tasks assigned by his superiors.
After his martyrdom, the JoongAng Daily commented that he highly praised General Peng Shiliang, and the elder Chiang kai-shek posthumously awarded him the rank of lieutenant general. The Japanese radio broadcast also gave high praise, calling the Provisional Fifth Division of the Seventy-third Army "a division with a strong will to fight and not to be insulted."
