The Model 3 is expected to be the best-selling electric car in Europe

With overall sales of electric vehicles growing significantly, the Tesla Model 3 is expected to become the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe by 2021.

According to JATO Dynamics, Tesla sold 112,687 Model 3s from January to November, making it easily the best-selling electric car.

The Volkswagen ID 3 is probably the second most popular EV sold with 62,467 units over the same period, up 124% year-on-year.

It was followed by the Renault Zoe, which sold 60,362 units over the same period, down 28 percent from 2020.

In September, the Model 3 topped the total car sales charts, becoming the first electric car to do so, outperforming conventional internal combustion engine bestsellers such as the Volkswagen Golf and Renault Clio.

According to data as of November, Tesla will be the brand with the highest overall sales of electric vehicles this year. While the Model 3 dominates, sales of the Tesla Model Y are also increasing. So far this year, the small SUV has sold 18,036 units in Europe.

In November, low-emission vehicles – electric, plug-in hybrids and hybrids – accounted for 26% of European car sales, up from 12% in 2020 and 5% in 2019.

As semiconductor shortages continue, automakers are pushing electric vehicles to help them meet emissions targets and avoid fines, prioritizing expensive, more profitable, and higher-emitting cars.

Felipe Munoz of JATO Dynamic commented: "If you want to own a new car in the current environment, electric vehicles may be more accessible given the range of offers and incentives. ”
