Although she has lived in the United States for many years, she often hears her parents tell stories about her hometown, which makes her curious about her hometown.
In 1989, Zhang Chunru graduated from the University of Illinois, and the following year, he found a job that he liked, working as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, writing important press releases. Because of the needs of work, Zhang Chunru often went to participate in some interviews, and by chance, she saw the old black-and-white photos of the Japanese army after the capture of Nanjing in December 1937, and the atrocities of the Japanese army filled her heart with anger and could not be calmed for a long time.
In her opinion, Hitler started World War II and killed more than 6 million Jews, known to all Westerners. However, few people know about the atrocities committed by the Japanese army in Nanjing, and even now Japan is constantly beautifying the war aggression, tampering with textbooks, and paying homage to war criminals, and Japan's actions are unacceptable to all anti-fascist allies.
In this context, she decided to go to Nanjing to record the survivors of that war and understand the true face of the Japanese army. In the "furnace" of Nanjing, Zhang Chunru worked more than ten hours a day, went to interview the surviving elderly every day, because she could not understand the local dialect, she used the camera to shoot it, and went back to find someone to slowly translate.
According to director Wang Weixing, who once helped her translate, she spent 25 days in Nanjing, and at the age of 27, she often had colds due to the unsuitable climate. But she persevered, working every day even until late at night, and sometimes seeing some old photos of the Japanese army, her tears could not help but stay.
She also collected a large number of materials Chinese, Japanese, German, and English, and also wrote letters to surviving veterans in Southeast Asia, consulted a lot of materials, and after several months of collation, in December 1997, her book was successfully published in the United States, becoming the most popular bestseller in the United States for a time, and was also named the favorite book of the year by American readers.
She was also invited to give lectures in which she recounted the atrocities inflicted on the people caused by the atrocities committed by the Japanese army in Nanking. However, there were also some unscrupulous Japanese people in the venue who questioned her speech, but she argued on the basis of reason, and the Japanese were dumbfounded, and they could only leave the scene in ashes.
But since then, Zhang Chunru's life has also undergone serious changes. She often receives harassing phone calls and threats from right-wing forces in Japan, and constantly receives anonymous letters and bullets, which is a threat to her. Slowly, she began to become depressed, shutting herself in her room all day, unwilling to go out.
For the sake of her husband and children, she had to start changing phone numbers and moving frequently, and even in public, she could not disclose her husband's phone number and address, and once a good friend of hers recalled that Zhang Chunru had been living in fear and was overwhelmed by the "small actions" of Japanese right-wing forces.
This continued until 2004, in order to make her husband and children more healthy and happy to live, she wrote a suicide note with tears: "I hope that everyone can remember the smiling me, I have lived seriously, for the goal, for the family sincere dedication, I hope that those who know me will be happy forever." 」 In November of the same year, she drove her car to a remote place, then pulled out a pistol and ended her life at the age of 36 with the sound of a lifetime of gunshots!
