Václav Havel was the first president of the Czech Republic and the last president of czechoslovakia. Born in Prague to a family of business owners. Worked as a chemistry experimenter. From 1955 to 1957, he studied at the Faculty of Economics at the Czech Technical University in Prague, and later worked as a stage technician, screenwriter, assistant director and playwright in a theater. In 1968 he became a member of the Nonpartisans Club, president of the Independent Writers' Club, and a member of the Czech PEN Club. In 1969, he was banned from artistic activities and became a worker. He was imprisoned three times from 1970 to 1989 and held for five years. In 1977, he was the founder and first speaker of Charter 77. In November 1989, he was the main representative of the Citizens' Forum. He was elected President of Czechoslovakia on 29 December 1989 and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and was re-elected in July 1990, during which time Czechoslovakia disintegrated on 31 December 1992. He was elected President of the Czech Republic on 26 January 1993.
