Huang Wei, as a lieutenant general of the 12th Corps of the Nationalist Army, was captured on the battlefield of Huaihai. The Kuomintang, believing he had died, held a memorial service for him, and his wife, Cai Ruoshu, brought several children to Taiwan. A year later, after inquiring, it was learned that her husband was not dead, but was captured and imprisoned. At this time, Cai Ruoshu was coldly treated by the Taiwan authorities, so he tried his best to return to Shanghai with his children.
After many inquiries, Cai Ruoshu learned that Huang Wei was studying and reforming in Beijing Gongdelin, and she went to visit him. After meeting her husband, he told him about his experience in Taiwan, and instead of getting Huang Wei's comfort, he was insulted. Cai Ruoshu, who does not abandon him, hopes that he will be rehabilitated and return home to be reunited as soon as possible.
Huang Wei, who chose foolish loyalty, did not choose his family, but still stubbornly resisted. Unbeknownst to his wife, who was expecting him to return home, she was overjoyed to learn that her husband, Huang Wei, would be released, and was disappointed not to hear his name. After 5 times, he never received any news of the amnesty.
Cai Ruoshu, who was alone with four children, suffered constant mental blows and eventually suffered from serious mental illness. In pain, she could only rely on drugs to maintain herself, and once she ate it, she was twenty or thirty years old. Until 1975, when Huang Wei was pardoned and returned home, her mental illness did not get better, but worsened, because she was afraid that Huang Wei would be arrested for eating again. In pain, she chose to take her own life many times, and finally jumped into the moat and hanged herself.
After Huang Wei was pardoned, he successively served as a commissioner of literature and history and a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In the 1980s, he went to Taiwan to meet with old friends in order to promote the peaceful reunification of the two sides of the strait, but the agents of the Taiwan authorities found Huang Wei and hoped that Huang Wei, who was in his seventies, would go to Taiwan and pay her 27-year-old general's salary. But Huang Wei refused, he no longer chose Taiwan, he felt that he could not live up to the mainland's care for himself.
Compared with Chen Shizhang and ten other pardoned war criminals who were denied permission to go to Taiwan, Huang Wei seems to be superior. By 1989, he was invited to visit Taiwan, and just as he was about to go, he suddenly fell ill and died, ending a sound that he could not describe in words.
