In the history of the new China's large military regions, there were 13 major military regions, which were gradually demoted or abolished, and in 1985 four major military regions were abolished, namely the Kunming Military Region, the Wuhan Military Region, the Fuzhou Military Region, and the Urumqi Military Region. And why did Zhang Haoxiu, the deposed commander of the Kunming Military Region, feel sudden?

Zhang Chengxiu joined the Communist Youth League at the age of 15, joined the Red Army guerrillas at the age of 18, served as a squad leader, and later rose all the way to the positions of platoon leader, deputy company commander, company commander, and battalion commander.
In the early days of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he served as a reconnaissance staff officer, and because of his outstanding mission, he served as a battalion commander and was later promoted to deputy chief of staff and regimental commander. At the end of the War of Resistance, he was promoted to brigade chief of staff. It can be said that his performance in the War of Resistance was remarkable.
At the time of liberation, he served as deputy brigade commander and chief of staff, and later promoted to deputy division commander and division commander, and participated in major battles to liberate East China.
After the founding of New China, he served as a division commander for a period of time, joined the volunteer army, went to Korea to participate in five battles, and was promoted to deputy commander. Shortly after his return, he was promoted to acting commander, and was appointed commander in the year of his appointment.
He served in the position of military commander for more than ten years, and in 1969, he was promoted to deputy commander of the Jinan Military Region, and six years later he was transferred to the Kunming Military Region as a deputy commander and participated in the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam. In 1980 he succeeded Yang Dezhi as commander.
He had been working in the Kunming Military Region for 5 years, and when he heard in 1985 that the Kunming Military Region was to be abolished, he still felt very sudden, because there was news that the Chengdu Military Region was going to be abolished. So when the news came, he was still a bit surprised. He became the last commander of the Kunming Military Region.
After the military region was abolished, he called on cadres to become younger and retreat to the second line. He continued to live in his old age until his death due to illness in 2009.
