Why is EDR sought after?

At the beginning of April this year, the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Notice on matters related to the implementation of GB7258-2017 No. 2 Amendment Order", which supplemented the "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", which clarified that from January 1, 2022, all newly produced passenger cars in China are mandatorily equipped with EDR or equipped with DVR (Vehicle Video Driving Record System) that meets the regulations.

Why is EDR sought after?

The supplementary regulations are considered to be a powerful measure to restore vehicle road accidents in the era of intelligent driving, and to a great extent provide a strong guarantee for accident identification. So, what is the technical basis on which it is based? How can its implementation truly effectively solve the many challenges encountered in current vehicle accidents? What are its "digital weapons" to prevent and warn of accidents?

With these questions in mind, we walked into Tianjin Boer Technology Co., Ltd. and took you to an in-depth understanding of the hot EDR through an interview with Technical Director Du Hanyu.

What is EDR?

EDR (Event Data Record) is an automotive event data recording system. This system is mainly responsible for recording the data before and after the accident of the vehicle, including the operation data of the car in the three stages before, during and after the collision, such as speed, ABS (anti-lock braking system) status, steering wheel steering angle, vehicle braking state, etc. Simply understood, EDR is the "black box" of the car, and the information it records can reproduce the accident process, which is used for automobile accident analysis and can provide a basis for improving the vehicle safety system.

Reporter: Hello Mr. Du, EDR has been very popular recently, but many people do not understand how EDR analyzes automobile accidents, such as what is the collision mentioned?

Du Zong: Collision event refers to normal circumstances, such as people, vehicles in the driving process is accelerated, our normal driving regardless of sharp acceleration, sharp deceleration will have an acceleration value, in the collision process will produce a relatively large acceleration value, collision event is mainly through the acceleration value of the calculation and judgment, to determine whether it is an event. According to the size of the acceleration value, it is currently divided into two types of events, one is an ordinary event, a non-locking event, relatively speaking, the threshold of acceleration is relatively small, and there is a more serious type of event, the threshold of acceleration is relatively large, this belongs to the locking event, and the data needs to be saved permanently after triggering.

The acceleration of the trigger method is on the one hand, and the second aspect, such as the car has an airbag or other device, can also be judged as an event when the airbag is triggered.

Reporter: What is the difference between locking events and non-locking events that you mentioned?

Mr. Du: The locking event and the non-locking event are the thresholds of acceleration or speed change over a fixed time that are not the same as those just mentioned.

Locking events are more serious, the acceleration threshold is relatively large, once triggered, this event will be permanently retained, locked, will not be affected and covered by other events; non-locking events are some ordinary events, the threshold is relatively small, and the subsequent trigger event will overwrite this set of data, which is a non-locking event.

Reporter: So what do you mean by the start and end points in the collision?

Mr. Du: The starting point and end point of the collision event means that when we record the collision event, we need to record the entire event, where is the beginning of the event? It is the principle of having a starting point and an ending point for judgment. The starting point is generally the direction of the X axis, that is, the longitudinal direction acceleration or delta-V in a fixed time, the delta-V of 20ms is not less than 0.8km/h, which is the starting point of the collision event, and the end point is the delta-V of 20ms after the event is triggered for the first time less than 0.8km/h, which is the end point of the collision event, and the range of the starting point plus the end point is the data of the entire event. The national standard requires that the maximum recording time of this event record is 260ms, if it does not exceed 260ms of data, such as 130ms, the start to the end point is only 130ms, the data from the beginning to the end plus the end point continues to 30ms, this time will be considered the data of the entire event, and the data will be stored in the EDR product.

Reporter: What data does EDR generally record?

Mr. Du: Models after January 1, 2022 need to meet the class A data recording standards, and the class A data mainly records several types of data: some data related to acceleration and speed change delta-V inside the first type of EDR product, what is the maximum delta-V, time, acceleration value; other related data are mainly related to the state of the vehicle, such as the speed of the vehicle before the collision, the state of the brake pedal, the state of the accelerator pedal, the state of the seat belt, etc Finally, there is a type of data related to the event and the EDR itself, such as how many cycles a cycle of the event occurs, the interval between the two events, including the vehicle VIN, the version information of the EDR's own software and hardware, and so on.

Reporter: If the vehicle is announced, what relevant tests does EDR need to do?

Mr. Du: At present, in terms of standards after 2022, the announcement on the vehicle must do three EDR-related tests, one is the crash test, the other is the driving data test, and the third is the bench test. Crash test is mainly to test whether the triggering, collection and recording of events in the collision process of the vehicle meet the requirements of the national standard, including the accuracy of acceleration and speed change to meet the requirements of the national standard; driving data test mainly tests whether the current state of the vehicle can be accurately collected when the event is triggered, such as the speed state, brake state and throttle state, whether it is consistent with the preset value; the bench test is mainly the logic of test coverage, storage logic, lock non-lock coverage logic and trigger logic, as well as related functions such as power-off storage.

Reporter: It is understood that some bus manufacturers integrate EDR into the five-in-one motor controller, and want to understand the advantages and disadvantages of our program and the five-in-one motor controller integrated EDR program.

Mr. Du: The advantage is that the integration can save a certain amount of space, and the disadvantage is that the controller installation requirements are high, and this integration will directly affect other functions.

Why is EDR sought after?

It is believed that with the wide production and application of EDR, the industrial chain of sensors, storage, MCUs, spare batteries and so on will benefit greatly, such as automotive networking related companies (software development, Internet services) and so on. This is undoubtedly a huge encouragement for the entire industry.
