The new coating on the aluminum surface inside the cooler is a very thin ceramic film. It ensures that the coolant is essentially unaffected by harmful ions, thus maintaining its long-term non-conductive properties. In order to design a safely operating fuel cell cooling circuit, the coolant used must be non-conductive because it will come into contact with the current-carrying elements inside the fuel cell. Conductive coolants produce undesirable leakage currents. The system uses deionized, high-purity water with additives. If this liquid comes into contact with the aluminum surface of the cooler, it will stain the aluminum material and become conductive again. Mahler's new coating prevents this from happening.
