As a competition venue for short track speed skating and figure skating for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the renovation project of the Capital Gymnasium was completed in December 2020, and after many test activities, the whole process and all elements of the test, the capital gymnasium has now met the conditions for hosting the competition.

The Lychee News reporter learned from the Beijing Municipal Major Project Office Urban Venue Construction Office that through the transformation, the 53-year-old Capital Gymnasium has not only become a track for figure skating and short-track speed skating at the Beijing Winter Olympics, but also, after new construction and transformation, has formed an ice sports park that integrates competition, training and scientific research in China. The total construction area of the whole park is about 200,000 square meters, which is divided into two parts: north and south. The south park includes four projects, namely the renovation of the Capital Gymnasium, the renovation of the first sports complex for training tasks, the renovation of athletes' apartments and the construction of a new Winter Olympic event center, and the north park includes two projects: the renovation and expansion of the Capital Skating Hall and the construction of a new comprehensive training hall. The transformed park has a total of 5 ice surfaces, which will play a positive role in improving the level of ice sports competition in China and promoting 300 million people to go to ice and snow.

Repair the old as the old, inherit the protection

Built in 1968, the Capital Gymnasium has been in operation for 53 years, and has been selected into the "Beijing Excellent Modern and Contemporary Architecture Protection List", witnessing the growth of Chinese sports and the development and changes of Beijing, and is also one of the gymnasiums with the most functions and the widest scope of application in Beijing. Beijing used as a volleyball venue for the 2008 Summer Olympics. This time, the old venue has once again changed its identity and will undertake the two tasks of short track speed skating and figure skating at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and will produce 14 gold medals.

The renovation of the Capital Stadium, adhering to the transformation strategy of "inheritance protection, based on the post-game, ensuring the timing of the game, and green technology", has not changed much from the perspective of inheritance protection, and still retains the style of the Capital Stadium as a regional landmark building. The overall color of the venue is still adhering to the traditional tone, and the entire venue is solemn and atmospheric, which is pleasing to the eye from a distance. The main entrance to the spectator area on the south side of the stadium and the steps of the VIP reception entrance on the north side, because they witnessed the 1971 Sino-US Table Tennis Friendship Tournament and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, have important historical value for the first body, and have been preserved in this renovation.

In addition to increasing the ice-making function and building a 31m ×61m multi-functional conversion standard ice rink to meet the needs of short track speed skating and figure skating competitions during the game, the capital gymnasium has also transformed the dehumidification, air supply system, and grandstand seats, etc. The seats are arranged in parallel, the leg space and seat spacing are adjusted, and the competition environment of the venue is guaranteed, making the audience's viewing experience more comfortable.

The most beautiful ice Green ice

The Capital Gymnasium uses the latest sound and photoelectric technology to create the "most beautiful ice". By hanging 36 pieces of 37 square meters of mesh film at the top of the venue, a huge projection screen of 1332 square meters is formed at the top of the venue, and at the same time, laser projectors are arranged in the four corners of the venue to project brilliant lights and beautiful pictures to the screen at the top of the venue, when the athletes dance on the ice, it is as if they are in a dream of the ice world. "The Most Beautiful Ice" can not only create a fantastic competition experience during the Winter Olympics figure skating and short track speed skating, but also provide an immersive sports atmosphere and audience visual guidance for mass ice and snow sports after the games.

The ice surface of the Capital Stadium also adopts the method of carbon dioxide ice making, which is currently the most advanced and environmentally friendly ice making technology in the world, and the temperature difference of the ice surface can be controlled within 0.5 degrees, and the heat recovery rate is high. This kind of refrigeration is 30% more efficient than the traditional way, and the refrigeration is very uniform, and there will be no different temperatures in various parts. The Capital Gymnasium recycles the waste heat generated during the refrigeration process, which can save more than 1 million kWh of electricity per year, which greatly improves the green attributes of the venue. It is also understood that a total of 4 ice surfaces in the first park use carbon dioxide ice making technology, which has become the most concentrated area of carbon dioxide refrigeration ice surface in the world.

Mass Fitness Ice and Snow Base

The 5 ice surfaces of the First Sports Park were fully considered for post-competition use at the beginning of the design, laying a good foundation for adapting to mass fitness. The transformation of the first sports park not only meets the needs of the Winter Olympic Games competition and training, but also looks at the long-term development of ice and snow sports.

After the renovation, in addition to ensuring the needs of Olympic events, the transformed Capital Stadium can not only undertake various international and domestic high-level ice sports events after the games, provide more and better ice events for the capital, but also achieve seamless switching with summer projects. The training venue Winter Sports Management Center Comprehensive Training Hall "Ice Arena", after the game, while carrying out professional athlete training, will also become a shared facility to promote the popularization of ice sports to young people. After the games, the Capital Skating Hall will be regularly opened to the public as a national ice and snow sports popularization and promotion base, and the entire park has achieved full coverage of competitions, scientific research and training and mass fitness, becoming the center of China's ice sports.
