Heroes of the Times: On Dong Zhuo's Political Legacy Battle Introduction: Dong Zhuo's Potential Successor Blood Relations Group Status Summary of li Dai and Guo Feng's ascension to the throne

author:Fat Mi

When the heavens and the earth work together, the heroes are not free.

On April 23, 192, the third year of Chuping, Dong Zhuo was assassinated in Chang'an. Dong's relatives near Chang'an were also killed.

On the first day of June of the same year, Dong Zhuo's old subordinates Li Dai and Guo Feng returned from Guanxi to the east and west, entangled their troops along the way, defeated Lü Bu, and recaptured Chang'an.

In the remaining months after Dong Zhuo's death, the organizational structure of Liangzhou Group underwent tremendous changes. Since Dong Zhuo's potential successors were all wiped out, the middle and lower-ranking officers of the Liangzhou Army eventually took over his political legacy.

This article wants to discuss the chaos in Chang'an after Dong Zhuo's death, as well as the successors of his legacy.

This article totals 5800 words and takes 11 minutes to read

Introduction: Potential successor of Dong Zhuo

Dong Zhuo is the military and political leader of the Liangzhou clique and the only leader of the clique with sufficient prestige.

By analogy, Dong Zhuo's treatment of the Liangzhou Group is roughly equivalent to Yuan Shikai's treatment of the Beiyang Group. After Dong Zhuo's death, the Liangzhou clique fell into a de facto state of division; Li Dai, Guo Feng, and others opened their own governments and made many political decisions, which fully proved that the Generals of Liangzhou were unable to digest Dong Zhuo's political legacy alone.

The Liangzhou generals will violate each other, and there will be many people who want to fight

Since Dong Zhuo had no living adult heirs at the time of his death (192), no heir was established. Its potential successor can be speculated on both "blood relations" and "group status".

blood relation

According to Wang Yue's records, Dong Zhuo's concubines had "midwives in their arms"; there was also a granddaughter, Dong Bai. However, Dong Bai's father is not recorded, and it can be known that he died before Dong Zhuo.

(Dong) Zhuo's concubines embraced their neutrons (referring to infants and young children), and all of them were enfeoffed, and they were given golden purple. (Dong Zhuo) granddaughter's name (Dong) Bai, who was not yet in the woods, was given the title of Weiyang Jun. --Heroes

At the time of Dong Zhuo's death, although he had no adult heirs, he had brothers and nephews, daughters and sons-in-law, and members of the Lianzong Sect (i.e., gan relatives) who were recruited after entering Beijing. They occupy a higher position in the Liangzhou Group.

Among these characters, there are Dong Min, Dong Huang, Niu Fu, Dong Cheng, and Dong Yue.

(1) Dong Min

Dong Zhuo's younger brother Dong Min was the second most important person in the Liangzhou clique and the only general in the clique besides Dong Zhuo.

Zhuo Di (東)Zhuo Di (東)Min (東) Min was made a general of the left and was given the title of Marquis of Yan. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Dong Zhuo was a former general and Dong Min was a left general. The rest of the old liangzhou departments, during Dong Zhuo's lifetime, held the highest official position but the middle lang general.

(2) Dong Huang

Dong Zhuo's nephew Dong Huang also had a high political status. He served as a lieutenant and a lieutenant.

(Dong Zhuo) brother (Dong) Huang was a lieutenant in the middle and middle military academies, and a soldier. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

According to the Book of the Continuation of the Han Dynasty and the Hundred Officials' Chronicles, the duty of the attendant is to "control the left and right of the attendant, praise and guide the affairs of the people", and it can be seen that Dong Huang was mainly responsible for monitoring the Han Emperor. Judging from the identity of the lieutenant, his status is lower than that of Dong Min.

(3) Cattle auxiliary

Dong Zhuo's son-in-law Niu Fu (牛助), a general in the official Baizhong Lang, was higher than Dong Huang (a lieutenant) and lower than Dong Min (a general).

(Dong) Zhuo's son-in-law Zhonglang (中郎) will be a soldier of Niu Fudian (牛助典) in Beitun Shaan. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

From the perspective of in-law relationship, Niu Fu is also a potential heir.

(4) Dong Cheng

Dong Cheng, the nephew of Empress Dowager Dong, the biological mother of Emperor Ling of Han, was born in Hejian in Jizhou and was not related to Dong Zhuo, who was born in Longxi, Liangzhou.

However, Dong Cheng's treatment was completely consistent with Dong Zhuo's family, and he was even mistaken for Dong Zhuo's relatives at that time.

(Dong Zhuo) there are princes inside who think they are the inner lords, and there are Dong Min, (Dong) Cheng, and (Dong) Huang who think that they are poisonous. --Notes on the Emperor's Living

Since Dong Zhuo thought that he and Empress Dong were "related to the same clan", Dong Cheng was likely to be regarded by Dong Zhuo as "Lianzong".

(Dong) Zhuo took the (Chen Liu) king as the sage, and (Chen Liu Wang) was raised by Empress Dong, and (Dong) Zhuo thought that he was of the same clan as the (Dong) Empress Dowager, and had the intention of abolishing it. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Dong Zhuo thought that he was of the same ethnic group as Empress Dong and treated Dong Cheng kindly

The act of joining the sect is very common in patriarchal societies, and this phenomenon is also described in the Dream of the Red Chamber, written in the Qing Dynasty. For example, Wang Dog'er (Liu's son-in-law) and Wang Xifeng, whose ancestors were Lianzong.

It turned out that this little family, surnamed Wang, was a local family, and his ancestors had also been a small Beijing official, and in the past years, he had met the father of Lady Wang, the ancestor of Sister Feng. Because of the snobbery of the royal family, he joined the sect and recognized him as a nephew. --"Dream of the Red Chamber The Sixth Time"

(5) Dong Yue

There is also a Dong Yue in the Dong Zhuo Group, whose records are scattered and whose relationship with Dong Zhuo is also unknown.

Dong Yue was ordered to guard the Hongnong Pond, and was of the same rank as Niu Fu, and was a Zhonglang general. It can be seen that he has a high status in Liangzhou Group.

According to Dong Yue's killing by Niu Fu, he should not be Dong Zhuo's immediate family, but may also be a member of the Lianzong Sect similar to Dong Cheng.

Zhonglang sent Dong Yuelai (Niu) to assist him, and the assistant envoy, Zhenzhi, had to be exchanged and left, and the Zheng said: "Fire wins gold, and the outside plots the inner guaya." "Instant kill (Dong) Yue. --Wang Shen, Book of Wei

The above five members, except for Dong Cheng, all died one after another after Dong Zhuo's death.

Dong Min and Dong Huang were killed in the Gyeonggi region (郿县) immediately; Although Dong Yue and Niu Fu were stationed in the field and luckily escaped the initial purge, they soon died of infighting. Niu Fu killed Dong Yue, and Hu Chi'er killed Niu Fu again.

(Niu Fu) Du and Suo Hou Hu Chi'er and five or six other people followed, crossed the river north of the city, Chi'er and other gold treasures, beheaded and sent to Chang'an. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Dong Cheng was a member of Dong Zhuo's Lianzong Sect, had no blood relatives, and did not have sufficient political prestige. Judging from the records that Dong Cheng later married his daughter to Emperor Xian of Han, it is likely that he fell back to the Han court after Dong Zhuo's death.

group status

In Dong Zhuo's military group, the generals were only Dong Zhuo and Dong Min. Under the general, there were seven lieutenant generals with names and a number of lieutenants.

The seven Zhonglang will be: Niu Fu, Dong Yue, Duan Sheng, Hu Yun, Yang Ding, Xu Rong, and Lü Bu.

As for li dai, guo feng, Fan Chou, Zhang Ji, Jia Xu, and others who were more famous than colonels, the official positions during Dong Zhuo's lifetime were not only lieutenants and did not have the qualifications to inherit.

Therefore, after the murder of Dong Min and Dong Huang and other immediate family members, the successor of the Liangzhou Group, in terms of seniority, should be selected from these seven middle generals.

Paradoxically, these seven lieutenant generals, for various reasons, have successively withdrawn from the battle for succession.

(1) Lü Bu

Lü Bu was born in a state and used to belong to Ding Yuan. Due to the late submission of Dong Zhuo, he had a shallower reputation in the Liangzhou Group.

(Dong) Zhuo took (Lü) Bu as a knight lieutenant... Relocated slightly to Zhonglang General. --The Biography of Lü Bu of Wei

When fighting against the Kwantung princes, Lü Bu was once again subordinate to Hu Yun, who was also a general of zhonglang, and it can be seen that his actual status was not too high.

(Dong) Zhuo also sent five thousand troops to greet him, Chen Jun's Taishou Hu Yun was the grand governor, Lü Bu was the riding governor, and the rest of the infantry generals were many governors. --Heroes

After Dong Zhuo's death, the relationship between the Hezhou Group and the Liangzhou Group fell to a freezing point. As the culprit in the assassination of Dong Zhuo, Lü Bu was naturally not qualified to inherit Dong Zhuo's political legacy.

(Lü) Bu committed suicide (Dong) Zhuo Hou, fearing the people of Liangzhou, and the people of Liangzhou complained. --The Biography of Lü Bu of Wei

Lü Bu killed Dong Zhuo and feared the people of Liangzhou

(2) (3) Niu Fu, Dong Yue

Dong Yue and Niu Fu were introduced above.

When Dong Zhuo was killed, Niu Futun was stationed in Shaanxi County, and Dong Yuetun was stationed in Shichi, both in Hongnong.

(Dong Zhuo) is to make Dong Zhonglang put Dong Yue Tun Tong Chi, Zhong Lang will simmer Duan Tun Huayin, and Zhong Lang will niu fu Tun An Yi. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Dong Yue went to attach himself to Niu Fu, and as a result, infighting broke out between the two sides. Dong Yue was killed by Niu Fu (see note above), and Niu Fu was killed by Hu guards.

(Niu) auxiliary injury waist can not be done, Zhu Hu took its gold and beads, beheaded Chang'an. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

(4) Duan Simmer

Duan Sheng was born in Liangzhou and was the brother of Duan Jiao, the prince, and his dependence on Dong Zhuo was relatively low. Combined with the records of Duan Simmering in the third year of Jian'an (198) and rebelling against Li Dai, he was about neutral at that time (192).

In the third year of Jian'an, Pei Mao, the dispatcher, led Zhonglang to simmer Duan to li dai and Yi san. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

After Li Dai recaptured Chang'an, most of the participants were promoted to heavy generals. For example, Li Dai moved the general of the car, Guo Feng moved the general after the move, Fan Chou moved the right general, Zhang Ji moved the zhendong general, and then moved the general of the horse.

(Li) Dai also moved the car to ride the general, open the house, lead the lieutenant colonel, fake festival. (Guo) Was a general of the Hou Dynasty, a general of the (Fan) Chou Right, and Zhang Ji was made a general of Zhendong, and was given the title of Marquis of Lie. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Duan Simmer was only moved to general Ning Ji, that is, a miscellaneous general. It can be seen that his contribution to the Battle for Chang'an is limited. In terms of merit, it is natural that there is no qualification for inheritance.

(Emperor Xian) drove into Huayin, and the Ning Ji general Duan Sheng was a subordinate of the imperial court and the secretary of state, and asked the emperor to be lucky in his camp. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

(5) Yang Ding

Yang Ding was known as the "Lord of Liangzhou" and was closer to the "people of the state" in his stance. He later followed Li Dai (Northern Liangzhou) and Guo Feng (Zhangye, Liangzhou), who had returned to Guanzhong, to attack Wang Yun.

(Li) Dai waited in Shaanxi, all of them were terrified, and they rushed to defend themselves. Hu Wencai (胡轸字文才) and Yang Zhenxiu (Yang Dingzi Renovation) are both Lords of Liangzhou. --"Spring and Autumn in Kyushu"

However, Yang Ding and Duan Sheng's relationship is not harmonious, and the relationship with Li Dai and others is also estranged, and the popularity is not too good. This may have been one of the reasons why he lost his right to inherit.

Zhang Ji conspired with Guo Duo (Guo Feng) and Yang Ding, and was also attached to the crown belt (i.e., Gongqing Shifu). Yang Feng, Bai Bo Shuai'er, and Yu Zhi (referring to Li Dai) did not do anything wrong, and although the general worshiped him, he still refused to do his best. --Notes on the Emperor's Living

Yang Ding had a gap with (Duan) Simmering, so he slandered and simmered a rebellion, but attacked his camp, and it did not last for more than ten days. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

(6) (7) Xu Rong, Hu Yun

After Dong Zhuo's death, the dragons were leaderless, and some of the old ones would re-attach themselves to the Han court.

For example, Xu Rong and Hu Yun surrendered to Wang Yun and went to fight Li Dai on Wang Yun's behalf. In the end, Xu Rong was killed in battle, and Hu Yun surrendered.

Wang Yunwenzhi (王允文之), Nai (Dong) Zhuo Sent Hu Yi (Dong) Zhuo Zhi (李傕) to Xinfeng, Rong died in battle, and Yu surrendered to the crowd. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Heroes of the Times: On Dong Zhuo's Political Legacy Battle Introduction: Dong Zhuo's Potential Successor Blood Relations Group Status Summary of li Dai and Guo Feng's ascension to the throne

Wang Yun dispatched Hu Yun and Xu Rong to attack Li Dai at Xinfeng

Among them, Xu Rong was a native of Youzhou (see The Biography of Gongsun Du in the Book of Wei), and Hu Yun was a native of Liangzhou (see Spring and Autumn in Kyushu), who had different intentions, violated discord in the face of the battle, and eventually collapsed. In the article "Dong Zhuo and the Liangzhou Military Group", Fang Shiming believes that Xu Rong is a figure excluded from the Liangzhou Group, and the opinion is very appropriate.

After this great chaos, Xu Rong and Hu Yun also lost the right to inherit.

From the perspective of blood and status, Dong Min, the second person of the Dong Zhuo Group, is the undisputed successor. However, Dong Min and Dong Huang were killed first because they were in Yu County, near Chang'an, so the successor could only retreat to the second place.

Combining the consideration of "kinship and estrangement" and "group status", Dong Zhuo's son-in-law Zhonglang Will Niufu is the most honorable among the survivors, so he has become a strong contender for Dong Zhuo's legacy.

However, Niu Fu also died in a mutiny in the camp (he also killed Dong Yue before his death), resulting in none of the surviving Lieutenant Generals and Lieutenants being related to Dong Zhuo.

In other words, after Niu Fu's death, Dong Zhuo's political legacy actually became a "borderland". It can be said that Qin lost its deer, and the world chased it away. This is also the historical background in which junior officers such as Li Dai and Guo Feng were able to make their careers.

the ascension process of Li Dai and Guo
Feng

In the history of the origins of Li, Guo and others, the accidental factor has played a decisive role.

When Dong Zhuo was killed (192), Li Dai, Guo Feng, and others were plundering Yingchuan in Yuzhou and Chenliu in Yanzhou. When they heard that Dong Zhuo had been killed, they were horrified and immediately led their troops back to Guanzhong.

At the beginning, (Dong) Zhuo's son-in-law Zhonglang sent Niu Fudian to Beitun Shaan and dispatched lieutenants Li Dai, Guo Feng, Zhang Jiluo, Chen Liu, and Yingchuan Counties. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Dong Zhuo laid out three lines of defense east of Chang'an, which were garrisoned by Niu Fu, Duan Sheng, and Dong Yue. NiufuTun Shaanxi County, Duan Simmer Tun Huayin, Dong Yue Tun Shui Chi.

(Dong Zhuo) is the envoy Dong Zhonglang (東中郎) to Dong Yue Tun Tun Pond,Zhonglang (中郎將段煨屯华煨) to Huayin,Zhonglang (中郎將牛助屯安邑), and the rest of Zhonglang (中郎) to serve as a lieutenant in zhu county (朱山) to yu Shandong. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

In terms of the county division at the end of the Han Dynasty, the three counties are all in Hongnong. This is related to the geographical location of Hongnong, which lies right between Sanfu (京兆, Feng Yi, Fufeng) and Sanhe (河東, Hanoi, Henan), at the junction of Kanto and Guanzhong.

For the generals of Liangzhou, the situation in Hongnong was not ideal. The three zhonglang generals stationed in the local area are each pregnant with ghost fetuses.

Duan Simmer held a semi-neutral attitude, was uncertain, and focused on self-preservation. This has been analyzed above.

A fierce conflict broke out between Dong Yue and Niu Fuze. Niu Fu killed Dong Yue because of the shaman's rumors, and Niu Fu himself was killed by the Hu guards.

When Li Dai and the others arrived in Hongnong, Niu Fu and Dong Yue had become yesterday's yellow flowers. This group of Western Liang remnants was therefore in an extremely dangerous situation.

Than (Li) Dao, etc., (Niu) Fu has been defeated, and the crowd has nothing to rely on, and wants to scatter. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

To their west was Chang'an, and Wang Yun and Lü Bu were staring at the tiger. To their east was Luoyang, and although Luoyang was in ruins, Yuan Shao and others were still waiting in the Guandong Pillow.

However, the sky machine often leaves a line. Among the remnants of Niu Fu, there was one person who played a key role in the subsequent decision-making of the Liangzhou Group, and even changed the direction of history, which was Jia Xu.

(Li Dai) used Jia Xuezhi to send his people to the west. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Heroes of the Times: On Dong Zhuo's Political Legacy Battle Introduction: Dong Zhuo's Potential Successor Blood Relations Group Status Summary of li Dai and Guo Feng's ascension to the throne

Jia Xu: It is better to lead the crowd to the west and avenge Dong Gong

Jia Xu's relevant deeds are familiar and needless to say. At his suggestion, Li Dai and the others gathered the remnants of the soldiers and prepared to make a final attempt.

At this time, Wang Yun's arrogance and arrogance also unexpectedly became the help of Li Dai and others.

Since Dong Zhuo was killed, Wang Yun thought that the situation had been decided, and he not only did not allow Li and Guo to surrender, but also threatened to kill the other side.

(Li Dai) begged for amnesty. Shang Shu made Wang Yun and others think that when they killed Zhuo, they had been pardoned, and now they begged again, and they could not be pardoned again at the age of one year. --Xie Cheng's Book of the Later Han Dynasty

And Li Dai's rebellion, (Wang) Yun Nai Hu Wencai (referring to Hu Yun), and the renovation (referring to Yang Ding) made Dong explain it, not under the pretext of gentleness, saying: "What evil does the Kanto rats (Li Daitunbing's Shaanxi County east of Tongguan) want to be evil!" "-"Spring and Autumn in Kyushu"

Objectively evaluated, the situation of Li Dai and others at that time was indeed very bad, their combined strength was less than 10,000, and they were not Wang Yun's opponents at all.

Ironically, due to the arrogance of the Xiangzhou clique represented by Wang Yun (Wang Yun, Lü Bu, Li Su, Song Yi, Wang Hong), many things have been done that are harmful to unity.

Note: Wang Yun, Song Yi, Wang Hong, and Taiyuan people. Lü Bu, Li Su, and Wuyuan people.

(Dong) Zhuo was annihilated, (Wang Yun) claimed to have no further suffering, and in the interpersonal meeting, every lack of warmth, the staff was holding heavy, not following expedient measures, and it was not attached to the group. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, Wang Yunchuan

In this context, there were rumors that "Wang Yun wanted to kill all the Liangzhou people", which led to a large number of Liangzhou nationals in the Guanzhong area being forced to join Li Dai's rebel army.

(Jia) said: "Wen Chang'an zhongzhong wants to do everything possible to curse the people of Liangzhou... It is better to lead the crowd to the west and collect troops to attack Chang'an and avenge Dong Gong. "--Wei Shu Jia Xu Biography"

Li Dai set out from Hongnong, and when he was pulled out, "thousands of people" arrived at Chang'an City, "more than 100,000 people", and the black clouds crushed the city and crushed the defenses of this ancient capital.

The crowd thought so, so they formed an alliance, led thousands of troops, and marched west in the morning and night. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

(Li Dai) then sent his people to the west, and collected his troops, compared to Chang'an, and more than 100,000 people. --The Biography of Dong Zhuo

Judging from the visible records, the united front work of the hezhou clique is indeed very unsatisfactory. Not long after the war began, Lü Bu's soldiers (referring to the southwest barbarians) opened the city gates and welcomed Li Dai's army into the city.

Chang'an City was unexcusable and defended for eight days. Lü Bu's army had a rebellion in the army, and led (Li) to the crowd. --The Book of the Later Han Dynasty, The Biography of Dong Zhuo

It can be seen that not only the people of Liangzhou opposed Wang Yun's clique, but even the barbarian mercenaries in Yizhou were not interested in Wang Yun.

Lü Bu relied on his personal martial courage to break out of the siege and survived; as for Wang Yun, he was killed under the sword and axe. Bureaucrats of the Guanzhong region who were not even state-level were later purged.

(Lü) opened the city gate, and the general (Guo) said, "And the soldiers, but the body is decisive." Fen and Bu Nai fought alone, and Bu stabbed Fen with a spear. --Heroes

Heroes of the Times: On Dong Zhuo's Political Legacy Battle Introduction: Dong Zhuo's Potential Successor Blood Relations Group Status Summary of li Dai and Guo Feng's ascension to the throne

Li Dai broke through Chang'an, took Wang Yun and his henchmen, and killed them

Li Dai and Guo Feng, the middle- and lower-ranking officers of the Liangzhou clique, initially "feared and wanted to disperse and return to their hometowns," had become birds of fright; as a result, under the influence of various accidental factors, they unexpectedly recaptured Chang'an and became the new masters of the Han Dynasty. At that time, Dong Zhuo wanted to harm, but it was more than a month.

summary

From the time Dong Zhuo was killed to li and Guo came to power, although the interval was short, a series of major events that changed the historical trend broke out during this period. During this period, a large number of old people were forced to leave the scene, and a large number of new people emerged.

Because Dong Zhuo had been in power for a long time, his death led to the suspension of the supreme rule of the Han Dynasty.

Dong Zhuo's relatives, represented by Dong Min, Dong Huang and Niu Fu, were supposed to inherit Dong Zhuo's political legacy, but they died in accidents one after another.

As for the many zhonglang generals stationed in other places, for various reasons, they also defected one after another or died in the military turmoil. There are few survivors.

In this context, Middle- and lower-ranking officers such as Li Dai and Guo Feng were given the opportunity to get ahead. When Dong Zhuo was killed, Li, Guo, and others were fighting in the Kwantung and escaped the coup purge in Chang'an; when they arrived in Hongnong, they were assisted by the strategist Jia Xu.

At the same time, the decision-making mistakes of the Hezhou clique led to a large number of Liangzhou people joining the rebel army, which greatly changed the balance of troops between the two sides.

A series of changes and accidents contributed to the fall of Chang'an again.

In this incident, although it cannot be denied that the martial courage of Li Dai and others played an important role, there were indeed too many unexpected factors in it, and they have completely exceeded the subjective initiative of individuals. This makes the historical trend after Dong Zhuo's death look like a drama of absurdity.

Pei Songzhi, a scholar of the Southern Dynasty, once said with emotion that after Dong Zhuo's death, "the heavens and the earth began to open" and the situation was very good, but because of various accidents, it led to "the re-knotting of the strong steps and the great terrier Yin flowing", which can be described as an unexpected tragedy.

When it was, the Yuan Evil was both a scoundrel (referring to Dong Zhuo's death), the heavens and the earth began to open, resulting in the reunion of the Li Steps, the Great Terrier Yin Liu, the mourning of the state and the emaciation, and the coolness of Li Min's infant Zhou Yu, was it not Jia Xu's words? --Pei Songzhi

Of course, historical events are always contributed to by a series of subjective factors and objective conditions, of which there are both necessities and accidents.

For example, Dong Zhuo's death is inevitable, but Dong Zhuo's death at the hands of Lü Bu is accidental. It was inevitable that Li Dai would be trapped in defending Hongnong and in a dilemma, and it would be inevitable that he would go to war with the Chang'an side; however, it was fortuitous that the army was weak and the enemy was strong, and the situation was easy to turn.

Proverb Cloud: When the heavens and the earth are all working together, the heroes are not free. The same is true of Dong Zhuo's death. The analysis of the situation after Dong Zhuo's death helps to clarify the historical context and glimpse the great role played by chance factors in historical events.
