Tesla reportedly recently released a software over-the-air update that offers a controversial new feature: during the ride, people in the car can play games on the central touchscreen. This has reignited concerns about safety and driver attention.
Complaints followed, and regulators stepped in to investigate
Vince Patton, a retired journalist in Portland, Oregon, reported the tesla car problem. According to a video he saw on YouTube, drivers can play games on the tesla car's large central screen. Subsequently, he tried it out on his own Model 3 and found that he could play games such as solitaire while the car was moving. He said: "I was stunned that someone might die because of this. ”
This is not the first time that a car owner has filed a complaint about this issue, Tesla has received complaints from 59 Model 3 owners.
Some media experimented on the Tesla Model 3, and they found that when the vehicle is moving, the driver can open games such as Sky Force Reloaded, Solitaire and The Battle of Polytopia on the central touchscreen.
A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) told the media: "We have taken note of drivers' concerns and are discussing the relevant features with manufacturers. Accidents caused by inattention while driving are a cause for concern, especially in vehicles equipped with a range of convenient technologies such as entertainment screens. ”
The multi-functional large screen distracts the driver
Installing touch screens on cars has become unstoppable. Currently, almost all new cars are equipped with large screens for controlling functions such as radios, air conditioning, and navigation. Ford and General Motors have even introduced app stores that allow drivers to order takeout and tickets through the central control large screen. However, such functions are often limited while the vehicle is on the move.
But Tesla introduced a pop-up menu in the update — before launching the game, players receive a notification asking them to confirm that they are not the driver. But this reminder doesn't help, as drivers can easily tap "I'm a passenger" and then start the game, and even play complex action games like Sky Force during the drive.

According to a 2019 study, drivers may be distracted when completing a task, and their eyes can be off the road for up to 40 seconds, making many vehicles increasingly dangerous as a result.
Previously, Tesla was controversial for circumventing safety rules and ignoring regulators' suggestions for improvement. Tesla has now begun using internal cameras to monitor drivers in its fully autonomous driving test program, but the vast majority of Tesla cars don't use any cameras to track drivers' eye movements to ensure their attention stays on the road.
