After the completion of Chiang Kai-shek's "Northern Expedition," China formed a huge military clique of more than one million people, including Chiang Kai-shek, Yan Xishan, Feng Yuxiang, and Li Zongren. After Chiang Kai-shek's bargaining with the major new warlords, a dispatch agreement was reached. After the drawdown of Chiang Kai-shek's army, the Huangpu generals gained orthodox status.
In 1927, Yu Chengwan of the first phase of Whampoa became the second Whampoa student to receive the rank of general after Lieutenant General Li Zhilong, the protagonist of the "Zhongshan Ship Incident". Hu Zongnan and Fan Hanjie were also promoted to major generals in that year.
In 1928, Li Mo'an, Li Yannian, Zheng Dongguo, and Guan Linzheng of the Huangpu Phase I were awarded the rank of major general by Chiang Kai-shek for their military merits, and Zeng Guangqing was awarded the rank of lieutenant general. Li Shizhen of the Huangpu II Period was the first to ascend, surpassing many of his first-term apprentices and being appointed by Chiang Kai-shek as the chief of staff of the Major General of the National Revolutionary Army's Military Station Sub-Supervision Department.
And that special cadet that Chiang Kai-shek had accepted, Tang Shengming, a graduate of the Huangpu Ivy Period, was appointed by his eldest brother, Tang Shengzhi, commander-in-chief of the Fourth Army, as the acting commander of the Eighth Army in 1930, when he was only 24 years old.
The dispatch agreement reached by Chiang Kai-shek and Feng Yuxiang, Li Zongren, and Yan Xishan finally became an empty agreement, and various new warlords expanded their strength and seized territory, which finally led to the Great War of Chiang Kai-shek, Feng, Yan, and Gui zhongyuan in 1930. As a result, Chiang Kai-shek relied on the Huangpu army, and all kinds of warlords were subservient. Among them, Li Yutang defeated tens of thousands of allied troops with a group of people, and was the first to be promoted to major general in the year.
And Chiang Kai-shek's first favorite general, Hu Zongnan, who almost failed to pass the Whampoa Military Academy, was even more proud of the spring breeze. During the Battle of the Central Plains, he had been promoted to the commander of the First Division, and led his troops to fight with Feng Yu's Sun Liangcheng's troops. Sun himself was fierce and good at fighting, and successively counterattacked Chiang Kai-shek's troops on both sides of the Longhai Line railway, suddenly appearing and suddenly attacking Chiang Kai-shek's troops. But he never tangled with Hu Zongnan's First Division, and when he heard that the First Division was coming, he retreated. When Wei Lihuang's Tenth Division heard that Sun Liangcheng saw Hu's troops, he withdrew, so he pretended to be Hu Zongnan's First Division and shouted as he charged: "Sun Liangcheng's troops listen, we are Hu Zongnan's First Division!" ”
When other Kuomintang divisions and regiments encountered Sun Liangcheng's troops, they also shouted loudly: "We are the troops of the First Division- Hu Zongnan..."
Sun Liangcheng was also messed up and complained: "How many troops does he Have hu zongnan, how to fight, are all his old Hu troops?" ”
The story of the true and false First Division reached Chiang Kai-shek's ears, and Chiang Kai-shek was overjoyed: "Or my First Division can fight!" Therefore, after the end of the war, Hu Zongnan was awarded the rank of lieutenant general by Chiang Kai-shek, becoming the "big brother" among the military generals of Huangpu.
The results of the Great War of the Central Plains were that Chen Mingren, Li Tiejun, Li Jilan, Li Yutang, Yu Jishi, and Jiang Fusheng of the Huangpu Phase I were promoted to major generals, and Hu Zongnan was promoted to lieutenant general.
In 1931, formerly Feng Yuxiang's subordinates, Shi Yousan, who had defected to Chiang Kai-shek, defected at Pukou and threatened Nanjing, and the Huangpu generals were ordered to "Qin Wang", and after fierce battles, they annihilated more than 60,000 people in Shi Yousan's three departments. On the reward of merit, the Huangpu generals sang the protagonist again, and ding bingquan, Ding Delong, Wang Zhonglian, Wu Chengren, Sun Yuanliang, Li Xianzhou, Song Xilian, Luo Qi, Zheng Dongguo, Hu Su, He Zhihan, Huang Wei, Peng Shan, and Dong Zhao were promoted to major generals, and Li Yutang and Li Mo'an were promoted to lieutenant generals.
After graduating from the military academy, in just 7 years, the students of the Whampoa Military Academy had become the backbone of Chiang Kai-shek's army, and when they became generals, most of them were 20 or 30 years old. For a while, the Huangpu general who hung a star on his shoulder was a young man with ambitions and his eyes were empty. Most of the miscellaneous military generals were older than them, but they could only swallow their anger.
Song Xilian, who shouldered the rank of major general at the age of 24, had an older brother, Song Renchu, who was already a staff officer of the First Army of the Xiang Army in 1924, and because he admired the Huangpu Military Academy, he entered the fifth phase of Huangpu. Song Xilian became a lieutenant general at the age of 26 in 1933 because of his meritorious participation in the Shanghai War of Resistance, and Song Renchu became a major general after more than ten years.
It can be seen that in the Whampoa Military Academy, the gap between the successive periods is obvious. More than a hundred huangpu students have successively become generals on Chiang Kai-shek's own side, and only Qiu Qingquan, Wang Yaowu, Li Mi, Hu Lian, Liao Yaoxiang and a few others have joined the ranks of the later students.
