Guests

The spring water in the north and south of the house is spring water, but the flock of gulls comes day by day.

The flower path has not been swept by guests, and the Pengmen gate is now open for the king.

PanYi City is far from tasteless, and the bottle restaurant is poor and only old.

Ken drank opposite his neighbor and called out the rest of the cup from the fence.

Du Fu: The flower path has not been swept by guests, and the Pengmen gate has now been opened for the king

【Translation】

My house is surrounded by a spring stream, and every day you can see flocks of gulls and birds frolicking here.

The path full of flowers and grasses has never been cleaned because of the reception of guests, and today I opened the door of the reed wood weaving for your coming.

It's far from the city, and there's no big fish or meat to greet you. Due to the poverty of the family, only the old wine was taken out to entertain.

If you'd like to have a drink with the old man next door, I'll call him over the fence to come over and have a few drinks with us later.

【Appreciation】

In our appreciation of the poem "The Moon and night remembers the brother", we once mentioned that Du Fu went to Qinzhou to surrender to his nephew Du Zuo. Soon, due to the famine in Qinzhou and Tonggu, Du Fu had to move to Sichuan, but thanks to the enthusiastic help of his two good friends Pei Mian and Gao Shi, he was able to build a temporary grass hall in Huanhuali, the western suburb of Chengdu. This poem "Kezhi" is du Fu's work of living here when he was fifty years old.

During this time, Du Fu completed many poems full of tranquility, as if he had woken up from a very tragic death. Of course, the simplicity of the caotang environment is indispensable in calling Su His elegance; coupled with Du Fu's life experience of most of his turbulent and displaced life, he has cultivated a mind that sees through the universe and the human world.

This "Kezhi" shows the kind of frank and bland emotional attitude, which is very different from the condensed (external) and sad (internal) style of his other poems, so we can also understand that the creation of a great poet is often a variety of styles.

Chengdu Caotang is located in the beautiful Huanhua Creek. Water always gives people a sense of softness and beauty, especially "spring water". There are several places in the spring water near Du Fu's writings:

A trail of wildflowers falls, and the isolated village is aquatic in spring. - "Sending Intentions" On the sixth night of February, the spring aquatic life, the small beach in front of the door is flat. - "Spring Aquatic Life" Drop the bait and fill the garden with a tube. - "Spring Water" Drizzle fish out, breeze swallow oblique. - "Water Sills Send Hearts"

Whether it is writing or side-writing, it is so curved. Let's take a look at how "Kezhi" writes about the softness of spring water:

"Spring water" is still and moving, "flocks of gulls" are moving and static, and the poet captures the beauty of the creation of heaven through the most exquisite words. Imagine how idle and wild it is to watch the flocks of gulls come and go by every day in the winding spring water.

The "gull" bird symbolizes the spirit of transcendence and freedom in Du Fu's poems, and the spring water presents a clear and bright scene, and once the poet is in it, he slowly has a sense of harmony between the heart and the materialization.

On the days when the microwave is not happy, a friend suddenly visits, as if stirring a mirror-like lake for no reason. What kind of shock did it bring to the poet? He said:

From the contrast between the two situations of "the flower path has not been swept by the guests" to "the Pengmen is now open for the Jun", it can be seen that the poet's incomparable leisure and the affection of the guests can be seen. Lu You's poem "IdleNess" once wrote:

Although the firewood door was not opened, it was afraid that pedestrians would damage the green moss.

Writing humor is a masterpiece, but the taste of the world is too light. Although Du Fu also escaped from the needless worldly socializing, he was happy to welcome the arrival of his closest friends. From this point, we can see Du Fu's great affection. He loves to live idly, but he is not too unsentimental, and he does have the gentle heart of a Confucian.

The "Pengmen" of the Caotang already hints at the poverty of the poet's real life, and the fifth and sixth sentences tell the guests about this material scarcity:

The poet is worried that the guests will misunderstand that he is not thoughtful, so he explains that it is because of the reasons of "city far away" and "family poverty", in fact, the main reason is "family poverty"! Du Fu's affection is sincere.

Lacking the apologies of material patrons, Du Fu tried to turn to spiritual compensation:

He was so earnest in imagining for the other party that people couldn't help but be deeply moved in a heartache. He hopes to comfort the lack of "things" with the abundance of "affection." In other words, it is to face a difficult life with a superhuman state of mind.

The last two verses of the poem seem to reflect Du Fu's gaunt and withered but full of gentle temperament, he is always so careful to put himself in the shoes of others, always take all the vitality, and make a kind of unrepentant bet and effort on the human world.

The idle and wild intentions expressed in this "Kezhi" are only a short-lived flower in Du Fu's mottled life process, and behind its beautiful surface, there is still a hidden voice of vicissitudes and an understanding of the tragic nature of life. However, from this rare leisure, can't we also realize the other side of Du Fu - simple and light?
