Song Dahui Zong Gao Zhi Mu
The famous Zen master of the Southern Song Dynasty, Dahui Zonggao (1089-1163), a Native of Anhui Xingguo of the Song Dynasty, commonly known as Xi, the character Tan Obscure, the number Miaoxi, also known as Yunmen, and the nickname Pujue Zen Master.
He advocated Zen and was the fifth generation of the Yang Qi sect of the Linji Sect. At the same time, he was also a representative of the Jin main war faction in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty.
At the age of seventeen, Zong Gao became a monk of Hui Qi at Hui yun Monastery in Dongshan.
In the sixth year of The Reign of Emperor Huizong of Song (1124), Zong Gao went to the Tianning Monastery in Kaifeng to pay homage to the Zen master Yuan Wu Keqin, and worshiped Yuan Wu Keqin as his teacher, and later studied enlightenment under his disciples.
Zen Master Yuanwu Keqin handed over his book "The True Book of Linji" to Zong Gao and instructed him to divide his seats. Suddenly, Zong Gao Zen master named Zhen Jingshi.
During this time, a monk asked The Zen master, "What is the actual place of truth?" ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Why don't you go and look for it when you didn't ask before?" ”
The monk said, "How did you find it before?" ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "It came with me." ”
The monk said, "It's really too fast, so it's hard to meet." Or ask the master about you. ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Forget the past and lose the future." ”
The monk said, "What if this happened between lightning stones and fires, but I didn't see it?" ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Three thousand miles away, you can also meet him." ”
The monk said, "If that's the case, then I'll go out and meet the master outside of the sound." ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Wear it through your nostrils." ”
The monk said, "Loyal subjects are not afraid of death, and can establish the great name of the world." A warrior who does not care about life can establish the great things of the world. I don't know what we monks are born to do? ”
Zen Master Zong gao said, "Wei Zhen Huan District is also within our duty."
The monk asked again, "What is sitting on a ten-square wall and standing on a thousand feet?" ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Look at the arrows." ”
The monk said, "Do you mean the same thing or are they different?" ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Two Vajra circles." ”
The monk said, "What does it mean that Grandmaster Fushan hit the door three times?" ”
Zen Master Zonggao said, "Not the same person." Zhiyin did not raise it. ”
In the first year of Jing Kang (1126), Lü Shun, the emperor, was ordered by the emperor to give Master Zong Gao a purple robe and the title of Master Buddha.
In the seventh year of Emperor Gaozong of Song 's reign ( 1137 ) , he was invited by the chancellor Zhang Junzhi to abbot Jingshan Temple. Therefore, the people of the time called him the Jingshan Zonggao.
In the eleventh year of Shaoxing, Qin Ju relieved Han Shizhong, Zhang Jun, Yue Fei and other three major generals of their military powers and prepared to negotiate peace with the Jin Dynasty. Yue Fei was even imprisoned and executed. Zong Gao was also relocated because he had fought against the Jin Dynasty, and his degree was recovered by the imperial court, and he himself was exiled to Hengzhou, Hunan.
In the 20th year of Shaoxing, Qin Ju was afraid of Zong Gao's rebellion because of the large number of followers of Zong Gao, so he exiled Zong Gao to Meizhou (present-day Mei County, Guangdong). At this time, Zong Gao collected quotations from the Enlightened Zen Master and compiled them into a book called "The Eye Collection of the True Law". It was not until twenty-five years after Qin Jun's death that The Zen master Zong Gao was pardoned, and the following year he restored his monastic clothes and lived in the Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou.
In the twenty-seventh year of Shaoxing, Zhang Jun recommended Zong Gao to the imperial court. As a result, Zong Gao was able to preside over the trail mountain again and pioneered the Zen method of kanjutsu.
Dahui Zonggao said: "A thousand doubts are only a doubt." If the words are broken, they will be suspicious for a while, and if the words are not broken, they will fight with them on the top. If you abandon your words, but you are suspicious in other words, in the scriptures, in the public cases of the ancients, and in the dust of daily use, they are all evil demon dependents. ”
Therefore, he advocated the zen of words (also known as the zen of kanju), and asked people to participate in the wordless head of the Zen master of Zhao Zhou. He encouraged scholars to investigate the case with suspicion and attain ultimate enlightenment. Zong Gao believed that the practice must be in life, and he opposed being far away from the world and practicing alone.
He vigorously rejected the popular meditation at that time, believing that it was "cutting off the life of the Buddha" and "falling into a ghost cave under the Black Mountain", which would cause scholars to only know meditation all day long, which was evil Zen.
However, he was friends with the main advocate of Silent Meditation, Master Hongzhi Zhengjue.
In the twenty-ninth year of Shaoxing, Zong Gao left the mountain to the Siming Yuwang Temple and prepared to go into hiding. At that time, the imperial court successively sent people to Siming and summoned them back to Jingshan.
Thirty-one years after Shaoxing, after the construction of the Jingshan Mingyue Hall, Zong Gao finally retired again. However, there are still many Zen scholars who come to him for advice.
In the first year of Longxing (1164), Emperor Xiaozong of Song ascended the throne, summoned Zong Gao, and gave him the title of Great Wisdom Zen Master. In the same year, at the age of seventy-four, he passed away, and became a Zen master.
Zen master Zong Gao often said: "In tea, in meals, when there is joy and anger, in the clean place, in the dirty place, where wives and children gather, where they are rewarded with guests, where they work in the office, and in the private marriage office, they are all the seasons when the first class of work is lifted and torn." Xi Liwen and Du Wei, in the rich and noble bush, participated in Zen and attained great enlightenment. When Yang Wengong participated in Zen, he lived in Hanyuan. When Zhang Wuhen participated in Zen, he served as a transport envoy to Jiangxi. Only these three elders are not bad in the world and talk about the reality of the bottom of the look! And why did he have to go to his wife, retire from his official position, bite the root of a vegetable, be bitter and inferior, avoid noise and seek tranquility, and then go into the dry Zen ghost cave to make delusions, in order to achieve enlightenment! ”
The Yangqi school of Zen Buddhism was pushed to the highest peak in his hands, and his Zen method had a profound impact on later generations of Zen Buddhism. Southern Song Dynasty science was also deeply influenced by him.
