Editor's note: The Great Hui Sect's Zen Master Gao was a senior monk of the Linji Sect of the Song Dynasty, the heir of the Yuanwu Keqin Zen master, whose Zen method was called "Zen of Seeing Words", which was in line with the "Silent Illumination Zen" advocated by the Zen master Tiantong Zhengjue. There are more than 90 disciples of the Fa, and works such as "Quotations of the Great Wisdom", "The Eye of the True Law", and "The Great Wisdom Arsenal" have been handed down. Today, on the anniversary of the death of Zen Master Dahui Zong, we pay tribute to the memory of Zen Master DaHui Zong! Nam no Amitabha!

Dahui Zonggao (1089~1163), a senior monk of the Yangqi sect of the Linji Sect of the Song Dynasty, the character Tan Obscure, the number Miaoxi, also known as Cloud Gate. His family name was Xi (奚), a native of Ningguo, Xuanzhou (present-day Anhui Province).

At the age of 17, Zong Gao became a monk under Master Hui Qi of Hui yun Monastery in Dongshan and received full ordination the following year. He successively visited famous teachers such as Dongshan Wei, Zhantang Wenzhun, and Yuanwu Keqin, and lived in Kaifeng with Yuanwu Keqin Zen Master during the Xuanhe years, and after the great enlightenment, it was the method of Yuanwu Zen Master, who gave instructions to the Yuanwu Zen Master and gave instructions in the "Linji Zhenzong Record". Soon after, the Enlightened Zen Master ordered the master to divide the seats, and it was returned to the jungle by the name Zhenjing.

In the first year of Jing Kang (1126), he was given purple clothes and was given the title of "Master of the Buddha's Day".

In the seventh year of Shaoxing (1137), at the request of The Minister Zhang Jun, the abbot of Jingshan Nengren Temple, gathered in all directions, and the sect wind was greatly encouraged.

In the eleventh year of Shaoxing, Zhang Jiucheng went to Nengren Temple to learn Zen from his teachers, and occasionally discussed the government of the dynasty. At that time, Qin Ju was in charge and tried to negotiate peace, and Zhang Jiucheng was the main warrior faction. Qin Juniper had great power, cut off dissidents, and Shi was not spared, so in May of the eleventh year, he stripped away his clothes and exiled hengzhou, during which time he collected the ancient Zun Jiji language and the quotations discussed with his disciples, and compiled them into six volumes of the "Zhengfa Eye Collection".

Shaoxing was degraded to Meizhou (梅州, in modern Meizhou, Guangdong) in the past twenty years, and its land was barren, and more than half of the hundreds of masters and apprentices were killed.

Shaoxing was pardoned in 25 years, and the following year he resumed his monastic robes. In the 28th year, the abbot of Jingshan was enshrined in the past, and it was sometimes called "Jingshan Zonggao".

The Great Wisdom Zen Master debated and often used the words "there is no dog and Buddha-nature" to make scholars refer to it, saying: "The monk asked Zhao Zhou: 'Does the dog have buddha-nature or Buddha-nature?' State Cloud: "None. This is to cite an ancient saying that has been studied by scholars for a long time, so the world calls it "Zen of Seeing Words", which is in contrast to the "Silent Illumination Zen" of the Zen master Tiantong Zhengjue.

According to the Great Wisdom Zen Master, when looking at the head of a conversation, "it must be a time to tear up, to sit and tear, to be angry and sad, and to always tear when it is used." Lifting and tearing, lifting and tearing, there is no taste, the heart is just like a ball of hot iron, then it is a benefit, can not be given away, suddenly 'heart Hua invented, according to the ten square brakes', you can 'appear in a dime of the treasure king brake, sit in the dust to turn the great Falun' ("Quotations of the Great Wisdom"). Similar statements appear more than a dozen times before and after in the Quotations, which is also the characteristic of Zen Kanju.

When the Zen master lived in the path mountain in his later years, the four square taoist customs gathered together, and there were thousands of people under the seat. Emperor Xiaozong also submitted to the Zen master and gave him the title of "Great Wisdom Zen Master". In August of the first year of Longxing's first year, he felt slightly ill, and he wrote a suicide note on the tenth day, and he wrote a will, threw a pen and died, lived seventy-five, Fara fifty-eight, and was nicknamed "Pu jue Zen Master", and there were works such as "Quotations of Dahui", "Zhengfa Eye Collection", "Dahui Arsenal" and so on. There are more than ninety disciples of the Fa, and the more famous ones are Siyue, Deguang, Wuben, and Daoyan.
