Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839, in a small town on the Hudson River in New York, to a poor family. He received his father's business training from an early age and inherited his mother's virtues of thriftiness.
In 1853, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he finished high school at Cleveland Central High School.
In 1855, Rockefeller graduated from high school.
On September 26, 1855, at the age of 16, Rockefeller became a bookkeeper for the Hewitt-Tuttle Company, an agency for agricultural products, and he congratulated the day as his "employment anniversary."
In 1857, at the age of 18, Rockefeller was promoted to chief bookkeeper of hewitt's Tuttle Andr, and began experimenting with some flour, ham, and pork businesses.
