Shangguan Wan'er was a controversial figure, and those who praised her believed that she was talented in poetry and could navigate the official field for many years, and had the name of the prime minister. Those who detract from her believe that she flatters the powerful, commits adultery, manipulates politics, controls the imperial program, and has a style of flattery and exaggeration.

Ru Ping version of Shangguan Wan'er
Today, we will learn about this Shangguan Wan'er from the Zhengshi (New Book of Tang and Old Book of Tang).
Shangguan Wan'er, whose ancestral home was Shangyi, Longxi (present-day Tianshui, Gansu), was a vice premier of the State Council (Xitai Shilang) in the early days of Li Zhi, and was later killed by Wu Zetian for drafting an edict for Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi to abolish Wu Zetian, and her son Shangguan Tingzhi, that is, Shangguan Wan'er's father, was also killed. Shangguan Wan'er and her mother, Zheng Shi, were reduced to slavery and reformed through labor in the Ye court (where palace women lived and women of criminal families lived). During the period of slavery in the court, under the careful cultivation of her mother, Shangguan Wan'er was not only beautiful and intelligent, but also familiar with poetry and writing a good article.
At the age of fourteen, Wu Zetian summoned Shangguan Wan'er into the palace and asked her to write articles, and Shangguan Wan'er wrote them with a pen, as if they had been conceived in advance. Impressed by his talent, Empress Wu immediately removed her from her slave status and made her a position in the imperial court. Since Tongtian (Wuhou Era), Shangguan Wan'er has been responsible for the writing of various edicts in the imperial court. Later, Shangguan Wan'er should have been executed for violating Wu Zetian's will, but Empress Wu felt that she was talented, and it was a pity to kill her, but only tattooed her face and allowed her to participate in major state affairs.
After the Shenlong coup, Wu Zetian was forced to abdicate, and Emperor Zhongzong Li Xian once again ascended the throne. Li Xian had great trust in Shangguan Wan'er, and ordered Shangguan Wan'er to take charge of drafting the edict and worship her as Zhaorong. Later, Shangguan Wan'er and Wu Sansi engaged in extramarital affairs, and when writing the edict, they deliberately promoted the Wu family and suppressed and attacked the Li Tang royal family, and Li Xian's third son, Li Chongjun, was indignant about this. Later, Prince Jie raised an army and knocked on the door of The Gate of Suzhang to let Shangguan Wan'er out, and when Shangguan Wan'er saw that the situation was not good, she provoked Emperor Zhongzong Li Xian and Empress Wei with harsh words, saying: "If I die, the next one to die is the empress and the emperor, in short, everyone must die!" Li Xian and Empress Wei were furious for a moment, and ordered the right Yulin general Liu Jingren to lead the Tun army in front of the Taiji Hall and defend themselves behind closed doors. Until Li Chongjun was defeated and killed.
Ajiao version of Shangguan Wan'er
Shangguan Wan'er liked to compose poetry, and her poetry was not small in the Tang Dynasty, and she once suggested that Emperor Zhongzong Li Xian expand the National Academy of Literature and summon the ministers of lexicography to be selected. The poetry was given many feasts and wine, and the group of courtiers sang poems and music together, and Shangguan Wan'er often wrote poems for Li Xian, Empress Wei and others at the same time, and the poems written were not only novel, but also gorgeous and beautiful. Shangguan Wan'er not only liked to write poetry, but also liked to comment on poetry, she evaluated the works of the courtiers, and gave good works to The Golden Lord, and the whole imperial court also rose to the trend of poetry. At that time, although the poets who wrote poetry had the wind of singing praises and praising virtue and exaggeration, there was also no shortage of good works, which was also the credit of Shangguan Wan'er.
At that time, the management of entry and exit in the palace was relatively relaxed, Shangguan Wan'er and his favorite people had houses outside, and most people in the imperial court knew that Shangguan Wan'er was messing with men and women outside, but they all pretended not to know. Some people who have moved the evil thoughts of crooked doors are waiting at their doorstep, taking the opportunity to smear oil on the edge of the coat, in order to obtain an official and a half-job. Cui Xiang (shí) was introduced to participate in state affairs because of his adultery with Shangguan Wan'er. Cui Xiang later built the Shangshan Road, and before the project was halfway through, Shangguan Wan'er made false merits and rewards for Cui Xiang on the previous system.
Earlier, Shangguan Wan'er's mother, Zheng Shi, had just become pregnant, and dreamed that a giant gave her a big title and said: "Holding this scale can weigh the world." Later, shangguan wan'er was full moon, and Zheng clan jokingly said: "Is it you who weighs the world?" Shangguan Wan'er casually agreed, and later Shangguan Wan'er was in a prominent position and in charge of important state affairs, which was in line with what this dream said. At first, Wang Yu, the son of Shangguan Wan'er's aunt, warned the Zheng clan: "The emperor was previously imprisoned by Empress Wu in Fangling, and the martial family was in power and ambitious, and it didn't take long for the Tang dynasty to be able to revitalize, what is this?" This is where destiny lies, and there can be no fluke mentality. Although Wu Sansi was briefly powerful, everyone in the world knew that he would undoubtedly lose, and today the emperor trusted Zhaorong very much, and Zhaorong was mixed with Wu Sansi, so there would be a danger of extinction! After hearing this, Zheng Shi was very scared, so he blamed Shangguan Wan'er, and Shangguan Wan'er did not think so. Later, Prince Jiezong killed Wu Sansi, and sure enough, he wanted to kill Shangguan Wan'er, and Shangguan Wan'er knew that what her mother said was true.
In the fourth year of Jinglong, that is, in 710 AD, Li Xian died, and the power of the imperial government fell into the hands of Wei Hou. In order to balance the rights of all parties, Shangguan Wan'er and Princess Taiping drafted a testament, making Li Chongmao the crown prince, Li Dan as the auxiliary government, and Empress Wei as the empress dowager's regent. Empress Wei, on the other hand, wanted to learn from her mother-in-law Wu Zetian and become the second empress. As a result, before they could do anything, Li Longji and Princess Taiping launched the Tang Long coup d'état, using the officers and men of the Forbidden Army to invade the palace and kill Wei Hou, Princess Anle, and all of Wei Hou's party. Shangguan Wan'er took out a draft of Li Xian's will and gave it to Liu You, who begged to take the edict and ask Li Longji for mercy, but Li Longji did not allow it, and beheaded Shangguan Wan'er under her banner. In the early years of the new century, Li Longji sent people to collect Shangguan Wan'er's poems and compile them into a collection of 20 volumes. But unfortunately, this collection of poems has been lost, and the Quan Tang Poems contains 32 poems by Guan Wan'er.
