Chapter Twenty-One: Wei Zhen Shangganling
On the night of 19 October, our army decided to retake the two highlands of Shangganling, which had been occupied yesterday by an enemy regiment.
Before the attack began, Wu Jincai, according to the instructions of the army commander, first swept the enemy on the high ground with artillery fire. Wu Jincai ordered the enemy to be bombarded by platoon artillery.
Suddenly, a hundred cannons of our army's Five Holy Mountain positions roared in unison, firing more than 30 shells per minute, that is to say, in one minute, the enemy's positions had to withstand more than 3,000 shell bombardments. The cannon fired rapidly for 15 minutes, and at least 40,000 shells poured into the land of the projectiles. The two highlands of Shangganling were almost ploughed by the artillerymen led by Wu Jincai with shells.
Under the stormy artillery fire of our army, the enemy's bunkers, trenches, and machine guns were mostly blown up along with the bones of the enemy. In this way, making full use of artillery bombardment can greatly reduce the resistance of infantry comrades when attacking.
Wu Jincai remembered that it was on that night that the heroic Huang Jiguang, when attacking Position Zero, bravely used his flesh and blood to block the enemy's machine gun muzzle in order to blow up a very strong bunker of the enemy, blocking the bullets for the subsequent troops to attack, and winning time. The feat of swallowing mountains and rivers deeply stirred the hearts of Wu Jincai and the artillery soldiers.
That night, the enemy could not hold on, and rolled down the mountain with a stream of urine.
However, the enemy was not willing to accept his defeat, and once again organized his forces to carry out a rampant counterattack.
On 20 October, the enemy dispatched several battalions of troops, repeatedly bombarded by 30 aircraft and hundreds of artillery pieces, and captured two more heights that our army had just recovered the night before.
At this time, the soldiers who held the high ground were forced to retreat into the tunnels and hold their positions. The enemy repeatedly attacked the tunnel, but it could not shake my heroic warriors in the slightest.
Annoyed and angry, the U.S. troops did not succeed in their plans, and they used a poisonous method, stacking piles of firewood at the mouth of the pit and then firing incendiary bombs at the firewood. Suddenly, the mouth of the tunnel was on fire.
The enemy laughed wildly and shouted that he wanted to roast our soldiers into jerky.
At that time, the flames at the mouth of the pit rose up to a height of one foot. Due to the siphon effect, the flames flew straight into the tunnel, and the tunnel wood began to burn, and the smoke in the tunnel was billowing and the poisonous gas was compelling.
Although the tunnel has a considerable depth, because the oxygen at the mouth of the tunnel is exhausted by the flames, and the heat wave rolls straight into the tunnel, the soldiers in my tunnel are all roasted by the fire, choked by smoke, and all feel breathless.
The whole army of my Five Holy Mountains was anxious: What should I do, immediately send troops to rescue? No, since the enemy had already captured the hill and was condescending, our rescue forces could not attack it for a while. Even if you can attack the mountain by force, under the enemy's heavy troops and aircraft artillery bombardment, there will undoubtedly be more sacrifices.
At this very critical moment, Wu Jincai, like the chief soldiers of the Volunteer Army stationed at the Five Holy Mountains, had his heart hanging on his throat and a handful of sweat in his palms, he was making up his mind, trying to figure out a way, he was worried about the soldiers of the Ninth Company of the 133 regiment who were in danger of holding the tunnel!
At this time, the forward position fired three red, green and white signal flares, which were signal flares requesting emergency support from artillery fire.
Wu Jincai's eyes lit up: overjoyed, with a blow of both hands: Good idea!
Yes, using artillery fire to break the blaze at the mouth of the tunnel has never been such a tactic in the past, but it is a good way to do it. It can immediately lift the tunnel crossing crisis in a matter of minutes.
Wu Jincai immediately commanded the soldiers, calculated precisely, and ordered: "Fire! ”
Our artillery spoke, and groups of shells roared up to the Ganling Heights and flew to the blazing flames at the mouth of the tunnel. Those American soldiers who were dancing in front of the tunnel entrance were suddenly blown up and their bodies soared, and the flames at the pit entrance were all scattered and extinguished by the shells. Our artillery regiment quickly relieved the crisis in the tunnel, so that the soldiers of the ninth company in the tunnel bought time and extinguished the flames on the sleepers in the tunnel.
All the soldiers on the Five Holy Mountains breathed a sigh of relief.
One day, gu Fu, the commander of the division, gave Wu Jincai an order: Destroy the enemy's forward joint command post.
Wu Jincai was ordered to first observe the enemy's joint command post for five days.
The enemy forward joint command post is a joint formation of the commanders of the sixteen national front-line forces led by the United States. The command post is not far from Shangganling, from the 394.8-281.2 heights of Shangganling to the west, about 15,000 meters away, is an independent mountain, although the mountain is slightly shorter than the Five Holy Mountains, but the height is also 600 meters above sea level, the mountain is deeply forested, the terrain is precipitous, and it is condescending, and you can witness all the operational dynamics of Shangganling. The enemy's forward joint command post is located here.
Wu Jincai observed: The commanders of the enemy's forward joint command post have very regular activities: Every morning at eight or nine o'clock in the morning, when the eastern sun rises a pole high, there is always a helicopter that flies over, hovering in the high mountain sky, and through the soft ladder that the plane drops, a group of officers climbs down from the plane, and a few people climb up from the top of the hill. At the same time, it was found that the roads around the enemy's joint command headquarters were all covered with enemy patrol units, motorcycles, tanks, and other motor vehicles in motion, which was a manifestation of the heavy guarding around the enemy's forward joint command post.
After careful observation and precise calculations, Wu Jincai found that the distance between the enemy's joint command post and our artillery position was 17,025 meters, while the maximum range of the howitzer was only 17,000 meters.
In order to satisfactorily accomplish the tasks assigned by Commander Gu Fu, it is necessary to steadily, accurately, and ruthlessly destroy the enemy's joint command post. The Wu Jincai Artillery Regiment specially held a meeting of the party committee and at the same time held a "Zhuge Liang meeting" of various battalions and companies to seriously study the tactics of attacking the enemy's joint command post.
After discussion, everyone unanimously agreed that as long as the gargoyle is transported to a hill in the front, in this way, the distance between our artillery position and the enemy's joint command post will not only be greatly shortened, but also the howitzer position will be set on the hill at a high altitude, the height of the artillery position can be raised, condescending, and the shell can be reduced in the string arc of the parabola during the transport, and the shell can be directly "fed" into the enemy's joint command post.
However, it was quite difficult to transport the two plus howitzers up the hill. This is because the howitzer is not a machine gun, but a behemoth, which weighs more than eight tons and is on flat ground. If it only relies on manpower, it will be difficult to move, let alone transport the cannon up the mountain? Only by building roads and using tracked tractors could the cannons be transported up the hill.
More difficult is that in the forward position, the enemy set up a heavy anti-aircraft machine gun fire point, and the machine gun can indiscriminately strafe all our uphill targets. Obviously, if this heavy machine gun fire point was not taken, my cannon would not be able to go up the hill safely.
Wu Jincai found his veteran scouts in the Northeast Reconnaissance Brigade, who were six tried and tested veteran reconnaissance heroes, including Zhou Zhengsen, Chen Dexiang, ju Wanhe, and so on.
Wu Jincai solemnly told his beloved generals about the significance of this battle: "The enemy's joint command post is the enemy's heart in Shangganling, and controlling it and destroying it will enable the enemy to chaos himself without a fight." However, in order to destroy the enemy's joint command post, it is necessary to drag the artillery up the hill. There is an enemy fire point in front of the mountain, and your task is to take it down, so that our tractor, with human assistance, can transport the cannon up the hill! Time is urgent, you must do everything you can to complete the task within an hour and report to me! ”
The six warriors with Zhou Zhengsen as the leader of the action team all raised their hands: "Yes, guarantee to complete the task!" ”
Zhou Zhengsen led the reconnaissance detachment, under the cover of bushes, and quietly touched it until it reached the enemy's machine gun position. But seeing that the machine gun kept shouting: "Da da da Obviously, the firepower of the enemy's fire point is quite powerful.
Zhou Zhengsen stared at him quietly, thinking that as soon as the enemy showed his head, he would give him a point shot and remove his Heavenly Spirit Cover. However, in the end, Zhou Zhengsen was disappointed, because they had been lurking for half a day, but they saw the machine gun sounding, and they did not see anyone shaking. Zhou Zhengsen wondered: How is this done, could it be that the enemy fire point is an unmanned automated machine gun?
The warriors quietly crawled forward again, all the way to the edge of the trench at the point of fire, and when they looked at it, they saw a major spectacle in the history of world war, and they couldn't help but laugh: These American ghost soldiers, really enjoy it!
It turned out that there were indeed two American soldiers in this fire point, and there were two anti-aircraft machine guns and two camp beds in the trench. On the marching bed were two beds of duck down quilts. Two ghost soldiers, each lying on a marching bed, all wrapped in duck down quilts, not afraid of the wind, not afraid of the cold, not afraid of the wet. They were only afraid of our volunteer army, and the people unconsciously touched them and beat them to death. So they used a thin rope, one end tied to the trigger of the machine gun, one end to their legs, as long as they were willing, a slight movement of the leg, they would continue to pull the trigger of the machine gun, and the machine gun would shoot violently. Anyway, the anti-aircraft machine gun uses a belt-shaped shuttle bullet, placed in a box, a bullet belt is about 30 meters long, tens of thousands of bullets, enough to hit an hour. My artillery soldiers crouched on the edge of the pit, saw the enemy lying in the yellow military duck down quilt, and shook his foot a few times, and the machine gun sounded a few times, and in the gap between the gunshots, you could also hear the heavy breathing of the ghost soldiers in the duck down quilt. Playing like this is really unheard of, never seen before, and thanks to their ability to think of it, people can't help but be funny.
Pressing for time, Zhou Zhengsen raised his hand and made a gesture to the group of fighters to catch them alive. Six of my warriors rushed into the trenches, lifted two enemies lying in duck down quilts and ran, while also capturing two heavy machine guns and two marching beds, all of which were gifted to our commander.
Pulled out of the duck down quilt were two American soldiers, tall, with a high nose, blue eyes, and white skin, which was different from the prisoners that Wu Jincai had captured in the past. The warriors also gathered around to see the strangeness, as if they were aliens from another planet. It is no wonder that the soldiers, most of whom were from rural peasant backgrounds, had never seen the world, let alone had the opportunity to meet all kinds of foreigners. Although all the people attacking on the Shanggan Ridge were foreigners, it was relatively far away from the artillery positions of the Five Holy Mountains, and it was not real to see, so it was rare and strange. The soldiers of our army were like monkeys, giggling and laughing, staring directly at the two American soldiers, and seeing that the two American soldiers were worried in their hearts, they were frightened and shivered. Because when they were in training, they were often intimidated by the officials, saying that once they were captured by the Communist forces, they would be buried alive and killed, and because of this, they were all scared and bloodless.
Wu Jincai did not understand English, so he had to go to the division headquarters to find an interpreter and comfort them with kind words. At that time, our army's food was very poor, and the troops often lived by eating fried noodles, but the preferential treatment policy was implemented for the prisoners, and Wu Jincai specially arranged various delicious canned meat, fruit, and accommodation for the two American soldiers. Finally, the two prisoners were taken to the military headquarters and handed over to the military chief.
After losing the enemy fire point, the soldiers of our artillery regiment sorted out the road up the hill overnight. Wu Jincai organized a tracked tractor to pull the howitzer and cooperate with the manual transportation, and in only 20 minutes, he pulled two cannons up the hill and camouflaged the cannons before dawn so that the enemy's reconnaissance plane could not see the flaws.
Wu Jincai wiped the sweat from his forehead, was very happy, and immediately asked "Zhiji": Chief, the artillery of our artillery regiment has been safely moved to the new position, when will it fire at the enemy's forward joint command post?
The head of the "Shiji" replied: "If you find the enemy, you will fight, and the specific plan is in your hands." The general requirement is to seize the fighter plane, to lose no time in beating the enemy bitterly, fiercely, and in fear, to show the prestige of our army's artillery fire, and to strive to completely, completely, and cleanly eliminate the enemy's forward joint command post. ”
According to the law of carefully observing the activities of the enemy's joint command post, Wu Jincai said: Usually at about eight o'clock in the morning and about five o'clock in the evening, the enemy helicopter was rocking around the top of the mountain. Wu Jincai seized the fighter plane and decided that at eight o'clock in the morning, when the enemy plane flew to the top of the joint command post, the impeller rotated, hovered over the mouth of the cave at the top of the hill, and lowered the soft ladder to begin entering and exiting the officers, he calmly issued the combat order:
"Two artillery pieces, howitzer air blow-up fuzes, 10 meters high, 15,000 meters running, artillery positions, listening to orders, preparing..., putting—!"
The two plus howitzers began to roar, firing two shells in a row and two more shells in succession.
The forward observation post cheered and reported to Wu Jincai: "Chief, hit, hit, the plane caught fire, fled with smoke." Ah, smoke rose in front of the cave of the enemy's joint command post..."
Hearing the report of my observation post in front, the soldiers in my position sang and danced, and all cheered: "Hit, the enemy's joint command has hit..."
Wu Jincai was not so happy, he thought of the enemy's retaliation, so he ordered: "All the personnel immediately retreat into the cave to prevent the enemy's artillery attack!" The observation post continues to observe, pay attention to concealment, and grasp the enemy dynamics. ”
Sure enough, just a quarter of an hour after Wu Jincai ordered the soldiers to enter the air raid shelter, the enemy's eight-inch artillery began to counterattack our artillery position, firing 150 rounds of 203 grenades in a row, and our position was blown up with smoke. In the rumbling of the cannon, in the shells of the explosion, my soldiers were at ease, laughing and laughing in the cave, without any casualties.
At about five o'clock in the afternoon, another enemy helicopter came over the joint command post and began to use a soft ladder to get up and down the commander.
Obviously, the enemy commanders believe that their artillery fire has destroyed our artillery positions, and they can continue to settle down and make tactical arrangements for Ganling.
At this moment, Wu Jincai ordered the artillery to run out of the hole, each of them, and he adopted the tactics of firing two air bombs first, followed by two instantaneous grenades, and then firing two regular fuze bombs. Among them, the instantaneous projectile exploded at the entrance of the enemy's joint command headquarters, and the periodic fuze projectile exploded only when it was fired into the enemy headquarters hole.
Our artillery shells exploded again at the enemy's forward joint command post, and the enemy was unexpected, caught off guard, and suffered heavy losses.
The good news came from our forward observation post, which made Wu Jincai ecstatic: the joint command post of the enemy's Seventh Division was completely destroyed by the artillery fire of our army.
The good news spread throughout the army, and everyone cheered: "Long live the cannon!" ”
The battle was won. The soldiers of Wu Jincai's artillery regiment spread a mysterious gossip to each other. It turned out that the two howitzers were cannons that had participated in the Tiananmen Square inspection in Beijing.
The warriors laughed quietly and said, "You know what? This victory is a blessing to Chairman Mao and his old man! You see, the cannon has seen Chairman Mao and his old man's home, and he has grown clairvoyant, and he actually sent the shells to the enemy's command post to blow up, and this explosion really blew up the enemy's heart, and the donkey liver and horse lungs were all blown out! ”
Our army's artillery fire showed its might, completely destroyed the enemy's forward joint command post, and shocked the enemy commanders, who regarded the Wu Jincai artillery regiment as a thorn in the eye and a thorn in the flesh, and they wanted to get rid of it quickly. As a result, the enemy concentrated a large number of aircraft and artillery and began to continuously bombard Wu Jincai's position throughout the day and carry out high-intensity and fierce retaliation. The positions of Wu Jincai's artillery regiment were all shrouded in bombardment, day and night, fierce fire, gun smoke, and bullets, and there was no time to rest.
In the frenzied attack of the enemy army, Wu Jincai's artillery regiment suffered heavy losses, some positions were blown up, more than eighty commanders and fighters were sacrificed in the regiment at once, and many soldiers were injured and crippled.
The regimental chief of staff asked, "What to do?" ”
Wu Jincai said, "What to do?" You must pay for your teeth with your teeth and your eyes with your eyes, and your blood debt must be paid with blood. Hit the fucking artillery to go! He can only fight back, and he is not allowed to fight back! ”
Wu Jincai called out to the reconnaissance staff officer Xu Fushu and gave him a task: "You calculate the firing elements of the enemy's artillery fire from the explosion of the enemy's shells in front of the position, and then measure the coordinates and orientation of the enemy artillery." ”
Comrade Xu Fushu came to the mouth of the cave, and in the fierce air wave of the artillery explosion, he paid close attention to observation, and soon measured the approximate distance and azimuth coordinates of the enemy's artillery position from the flight curve of the enemy's artillery shell and the explosion.
It's time for revenge.
Wu Jincai said softly, "Good comrades-in-arms who sacrificed gloriously, we must avenge you!" Just watch. ”
In order to accurately eliminate the enemy artillery group, Wu Jincai personally went into battle and led several staff officers to run to the forward position two miles away.
At that time, the two-mile road between the forward position and the Five Holy Mountains was a typical road of death.
The enemy knows that this short two-mile road is the bloodline road of our army in Shangganling. Through this road, the rear of our army continuously delivered water, food, clothing, and other supplies, guns and ammunition to the front-line Shangganling position. Therefore, in order to trap our company in Shangganling, we must cut off this supply line at all costs. In order to carry out this goal, enemy artillery regiments continued to fire on this rugged mountain road. Man walking on this road had to deal with at least fifty shells.
Wu Jincai saw that on the way, the bomb craters were one after another. The enemy's artillery fire seems to have no regularity to find, and they do not want our personnel passing on the road to grasp the law of shelling, they sometimes shoot a cannon in the east, a shot in the west, a shot in the front, and a shot in the back. Sometimes, a very dense artillery fire is suddenly fired at a certain section; sometimes, the plough is combed from front to back in an orderly manner like a row of plows, or from back to front. On the road, the bodies of our soldiers, mules and horses that were blown open and disemboweled, and many stretchers and lost food were visible.
In the face of this road controlled by the god of death, Wu Jin was fearless. He had shaken hands with death many times, and in the Yangtze River, he had overcome the wind and waves; in the Battle of Lianghuai, the grenades on the city walls were thrown like rain, and the god of death passed him by. In the Battle of Pingjin, he was thrown into the pile of dead people by the migrant workers, and only reported to Yan Wangye, but the god of death still did not dare to take him. Therefore, on the Korean battlefield, he felt that the life he had earned in vain was enough to die.
However, boldness is one thing, carefulness is one thing, and excellent technology has also become an important pillar to support Wu Jincai's risks. Wu Jincai is very resourceful, he has been a scout for many years, and he has a lot of energy. When he rolled too much in the artillery position, he knew the rules of artillery fire very well, and when the shells roared in the air, he could accurately predict where the shells landed. He didn't do the same thing about the volleying shells, and continued to jump and sprint in the shells. Only when he found that the howling of the shells indicated that the bullet point was near him did he decisively give the order, commanding the staff to jump into the crater and lie down, waiting for the shells to explode and quickly cross the past in the blazing air waves. Because he knew that in a minute or two, the same bullet point, the second shell would not be dropped, because tactically, it was uneconomical. So, despite the fact that his clothes were torn into strands by shells and thorns, he still rushed through the Valley of Death unscathed and successfully lurked under the eyes of the enemy.
Ahead were enemy artillery positions.
Wu Jincai lurked in the bushes and clearly saw that the enemy position was lined with four multi-barreled artillery pieces, which were constantly pouring a rain of bullets on our army's position. At this time, the soldiers of our Fifteenth Army were charging toward a Shangganling height, but the enemy's dense artillery fire blocked the way of our army's advance. The enemy's shells were screaming incessantly, like a mad devil, constantly sending death to the human world.
Wu Jincai was in a hurry; at that time, he was in the forward position, and he did not have any calculation tools, so he had no choice but to use his thumb to determine the specific orientation of the enemy's guns, calculate the firing elements, and study with the staff officers to obtain more accurate data. Then, Wu Jincai picked up the walkie-talkie and issued a shooting order to our artillery:
"East Wind Attention, East Wind Attention!" The grenade fired instantaneously, with a gauge ruler of 120 (equivalent to 6000 meters) and loaded in a salvo. Ready-release! ...... 12 consecutive salvos, ready to go! ”
For a split second, I saw that our artillery shells broke through the air with the sound of Wu Jincai's orders, and they violently hit the enemy artillery group, and all of a sudden the fire missiles burst out, and the enemy army was blown up to the point of crying wolf howls, and the bones flew everywhere. In this way, in just a few minutes, one position of the enemy artillery was destroyed by our artillery fire.
Wu Jincai said happily: "East Wind, East Wind, hit accurately, play well!" ”
Yes, he felt very happy in his heart, and his vengeful anger was quelled. He grabbed two handfuls of soil with both hands and said softly, "My eighty good comrades-in-arms, my heroes who sacrificed, our living comrades have come to avenge you!" You see, you listen, our artillery has blown up the enemy artillery positions, and you are under the Nine Springs, rest in peace! ”
On that day, because Wu Jincai commanded the artillery to destroy the enemy's multi-barrel artillery position, the enemy on Shangganling lost the support of artillery fire and was suddenly paralyzed, and the warriors of our Fifteenth Army took the opportunity to launch a charge and seize the high ground in one fell swoop. In this battle, more than 300 enemy troops were killed, more than 800 American troops were captured, and more than 1,000 pieces of various artillery and other light and heavy weapons were captured.
For artillerymen, shelling an airplane is not a strange story, and an airplane hitting a cannon is a strange story. Wu Jincai was happy that their artillery regiment had created a miracle of letting enemy planes crash into our shells at the Five Holy Mountains.
It was November 5, and at Position No. 5 in Shangganling, the enemy and we were fiercely contested. It was the position guarded by the fifth company of our army, and there was a new soldier in the fifth company, named Hu Xiudao, who later became a famous combat hero. At that time, in order to seize this projectile height, the artillery fire on both sides was very fierce, and the enemy's artillery fire was mainly used to destroy the strength and weapons and equipment of our army in the position, while the artillery fire of our army was mainly used to snipe the enemy's troops attacking the hill. The forward reconnaissance officers of our army reported to Wu Jincai that there was a battalion of enemy troops who were secretly gathering in a small pine forest and seemed to be ready to attack our hill as the enemy's artillery fire extended.
Wu Jincai received the report and said happily: "Well, the meat is brought to the mouth, and it is foolish not to eat it, so we will use Katyusha to 'click' him." ”
"Katyusha" was originally a Soviet field song during World War II, and everyone loved to sing. Because the Soviet-made multi-barrel rocket artillery was a new weapon of the Soviet Union at that time, it could fire several or even dozens of rockets in a short period of time, with fierce firepower, great power, strong mobility, and suitable for shooting at large-area targets, so it was welcomed by the Soviet artillery, and this Soviet-made multi-barrel rocket launcher was called "Katyusha".
Wu Jincai resolutely gave the order to open fire, Katyusha shouted, and groups of shells flew into the small pine forest one after another, and as a result, the strength of a battalion of the unsuspecting enemy army was blown up by our rocket artillery.
On the position of the Fifth Company of Ganling, the battle was fought very fiercely: the company commander was sacrificed, the instructor was sacrificed, the platoon commander and squad leader were sacrificed, the soldiers fought bravely, and in the face of the tide of the enemy charging up, the soldiers ran out of bullets, they fought with bayonets, the bayonets were broken, they fought hand-to-hand, they bit with their teeth, everyone would rather die than yield, and everyone was worthy of being a hero and a good man. In the end, the whole company fought and only the new soldier Hu Xiudao was left.
At this time, Hu Xiudao still held his position, because standing on the top of the mountain, he seemed to think that behind him was the great motherland, and he could not retreat one step, nor did he dare to retreat.
Perhaps, Hu Xiudao felt that he was not alone, he not only had a small Shangganling, but also a powerful Five Sacred Mountains, and a powerful artillery division.
Perhaps, Hu Xiudao thought that the light weapons in his hands were obviously enemies who could not stop the tidal attack, and that heavy weapons should be used against these vicious enemies. So he picked up the walkie-talkie, called out and directed our artillery support. He was brave and fearless, and he had the heroic spirit of "firing a cannon at me" and "firing a cannon at me" and "firing a cannon at the heavens and the earth."
Wu Jincai heard Hu Xiudao's sacred call, immediately commanded the artillery fire, and in accordance with Hu Xiudao's request, violently attacked the enemy on the hilltop position. Our army's artillery shells flew down in unison, such as volcanic eruptions and thunder and fire, so that the enemy could not calmly attack Hu Xiudao and could not gain a foothold on the top of the mountain, because the artillery fire of our army that was blooming everywhere made it impossible for the enemy army to find a hiding place at all.
So the enemy army was frightened, the enemy army was frightened, they had to throw away their armor and armor, the ghosts cried wolf, and all of them retreated down the mountain. In this way, a wounded soldier of our army, using the power of artillery fire, actually defeated the enemy and attacked in groups and battalions, creating a miracle in war.
The enemy could not conquer for a long time, so he sent planes to participate in the battle. Probably believing that he had the air supremacy over Shangganling, the enemy recklessly flew low on the top of the hill, dropping bomb after bomb while flying, blowing up our hilltop position like a brazier of smoke. Coincidentally, at that time, Wu Jin knew that there was only one person in that position, Hu Xiudao, and thought that in addition to the position that Hu Xiudao was holding, the mountains were full of enemies, so he ordered the artillery to open fire fiercely.
At that time, Hu Xiudao was staying in a corner of the tunnel, and he saw a domineering plane over Shangganling. Unexpectedly, it collided with the grenades flown by our army, and the enemy plane burst into flames at once and exploded in the air, filling the sky with the bones of the enemy plane and fragments of aluminum flying randomly. Hu Xiudao was very happy and cheered at the walkie-talkie.
On the battlefield of Shangganling, the US planes randomly collided with the grenades of our artillery, which can also be said to be a miracle in the history of world war.
The Battle of Shangganling lasted 43 days, and the enemy threw 60,000 troops into the position of only 3.7 square kilometers, dropping thousands of bombs, and the mountain was cut down by 2 meters. However, the commanders and fighters of our army fought bravely and well, fought in concert with infantry and artillery, repelled hundreds of crazy attacks by the enemy, annihilated a total of 25,000 enemy troops, destroyed and injured more than 300 enemy planes, and more than 60 artillery pieces, of which artillery fire directly annihilated the enemy accounted for about 60 percent of the total casualties of the enemy. Forcing the enemy to obediently return to the negotiating table, an armistice was signed.
In view of Wu Jincai's outstanding military merits in the Battle of Shangganling, the "Zhisi" issued a commendation order awarding Wu Jincai first class merit, and at the same time, Wu Jincai was also awarded the Order of the Democratic Republic of Korea.
Wu Jincai's artillery regiment was stationed in North Korea and did not return to China until 1958.
Postscript
After the end of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Wu Jincai returned to China. In the early 1960s, he was promoted to the head of the 47th Regiment of the Artillery Division. In 1962, his superiors transferred him to the Artillery Academy for another three years. After graduating from university in 1965, he became the commander of the 24th Regiment of the 12th Artillery Division of the Jinan Military Region. A year later, when the "Cultural Revolution" began, he was also put into another book for trumped-up charges, and he was shocked, squatting in a cowshed, and preparing for hardship. What pained him the most was that someone threw him a demobilization order and forced him to be demobilized to Changchun Village, Baota Town, Jianhu County, Jiangsu Province.
So, in the very simple production team water machine room, the old hero came down, he returned to the original starting point of life, and began to cultivate the south acre. In the muddy paddy field, he led the cattle and shouted: "Oh-ho-come-come, drive, drive!" "The trumpet of the cattle is full of vicissitudes in the field.
In the early 1980s, the Party Central Committee rectified the chaos and rehabilitated Wu Jincai. The Jiangsu Provincial People's Government specially promulgated a document announcing that Wu Jincai had officially retired and enjoyed prefectural and municipal treatment. The Jianhu County People's Government hired him as deputy director of the county Customs Work Committee. Leaving the army, he opened up two fronts: One is the economic front, and he tried everything possible to take economic construction as the center and seek investment and market for enterprises in his hometown. The other is the ideological and cultural front, and he often goes deep into schools and factories to carry out revolutionary traditional education for students and solve problems for young people. As a result, he is famous and admired in his hometown. During the Qingming Dynasty in 2003, Elder Wu died of illness at the age of 80.
Because his father also joined the revolutionary work in 1941, he was quite familiar with the old commander of Wu. Therefore, as a junior, I have the privilege of being taught by Elder Wu on a regular basis. Listening to him introduce the revolutionary war situation, I felt that it was a superb art, a rare enjoyment, and also a precious spiritual and historical wealth of our party. Through this kind of yearless relationship, I recorded the legendary story of The Elder Wu Regiment through certain artistic processing, with the aim of leaving the young people with a real yesterday through words, and reproducing the great achievements of our party and the soldiers of our army. Therefore, after more than a year of hard work, this book of "Beacon Life" was formed. Fortunately, the first draft of this book was completed before the death of Elder Wu and was personally reviewed and approved by the old hero.
The manuscript is ready, and there are many people who have attracted attention. I would like to especially thank General Zhou Keyu, a comrade-in-arms of The Elder Wu Regiment and former political commissar of the General Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army of the Chinese, for making great efforts for the completion of this book.
