Recently, the colored ibis, a national first-class wild key protected animal that was once considered extinct in China, appeared in the Dahuwan Scenic Area of Gaotai County, Zhangye Heihe Wetland National Nature Reserve in Gansu Province. This is the first time that traces of colored ibises have been recorded in the Heihe Wetland of Zhangye. After a week of observation and close-up follow-up shooting, the number of colored ibises in the Heihe Wetland of Gaotai has been preliminarily grasped, and only one has been found so far.

The painted ibis is a first-class protected bird in China, with bronze chestnut body feathers, a long and curved mouth, a beautiful shape, and a high degree of recognition. It mainly inhabits shallow lakes, swamps, ponds, wetlands and other freshwater waters, active and foraging during the day, and flying to trees farther away from the foraging waters at night. According to the data, for more than 70 years, no colored ibises have been observed in China, and the "Red Book of Endangered Animals in China" published in 1998 once declared that colored ibises were extinct in China.

Gaotai Heihe Wetland is the core area of Zhangye Heihe Wetland National Nature Reserve, accounting for 73% of the total area. In recent years, Gaotai County has vigorously promoted the restoration and protection of the ecological environment of Qilian Mountain, and the ecological environment has been significantly improved, creating unique habitat conditions for migratory birds to migrate and stay. The discovery of the rare bird painted ibis is also a witness to the ecological construction, wetland protection and restoration, and biodiversity conservation of Heihe Wetland.
