Because Gorbachev was still the recognized head of the Soviet Union and held the power of the Soviet army, Yeltsin's life was lost if he was not careful.
Yeltsin feared that Gorbachev would have the support of Nazarbayev, the most influential leader of the five Central Asian states. Moreover, Kazakhstan is the only country in the Soviet Union that is not a Slav, and it is also a country with nuclear weapons except For Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
There are also many Slavs in Kazakhstan, who have a high status in the Soviet Union, and Gorbachev used the support of the five Central Asian countries to veto the proposal of a new alliance between Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Yeltsin had asked his subordinates to call Nazarbayev, but Nazarbayev had already flown to Moscow. Yeltsin thought things were serious. He still wanted to contact Nazarbayev, so he informed the Moscow airport that he wanted to talk to Nazarbayev before he met Gorbachev, but without success. Gorbachev is said to have informed the air traffic control that no one was allowed to make air contact with Nazarbayev.
It was not until Nazarbayev arrived in Moscow that Yeltsin contacted him, and Yeltsin tried to persuade Nazarbayev to accept the new alliance he was now. Nazarbayev also agreed to go to Belarus, but Nazarbayev did not come.
At that time, some people thought that Gorbachev might use force against Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, and the leaders of the Belarusian KGB believed that under the circumstances at that time, only one battalion of troops was needed to arrest all the leaders of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and those around them.

Yeltsin was still worried that something would happen to Moscow and that everything would go wrong, so he called Shaposhnikov in the evening and told him that Russia and Belarus had established a new alliance, and informed him that he would serve as the defense minister of the new alliance, with Shaponikov under unified command of the strategic forces and keeping him away from Gorbachev.

But Yeltsin's phone call with Shaponikov was quickly known to Gorbachev, who asked about the situation in Belarus, and Shaposhnikov was also nervous and did not know how to answer, after all, Gorbachev was the supreme leader of the army. But Gorbachev only warned Shaposhnikov not to be nosy. In Gorchev's view, he was the leader of the army. But then Heydar claimed that Gorbachev did not even have a regiment loyal to him.
Gorbachev was also dazed, did he really not know that the Soviet Union was facing a dangerous situation, or was he deliberately condoning development? Even the defense chief turned his back on him. Some say that if Gorbachev had ordered the dismissal of the defense minister at this time and the rapid arrest of the Russian and Belarusian leaders, history would have been rewritten, but Gorbachev was indecisive and could not have made such a decision. But history has no chance to give Gorbachev any more.

Yeltsin, in addition to calling Nazarbayev and stabilizing the defense minister, then he called the elder Bush and told him that the Soviet Union was gone and that he had formed a new alliance. Yeltsin told Bush Sr. that Nazarbayev had agreed to the new alliance, but that Nazarbayev was not actually involved.
Bush Sr. replied cautiously to what Yeltsin had said, believing that Yeltsin's gang could not succeed. His biggest fear was nuclear weapons, which would pose a great threat to the United States if the Soviet arsenal were not secure. After informing the United States, Yeltsin finally completed all the things he had to do. But who will tell Gorbachev. Finally, Belarus Shushkovich was asked to call Gorbachev. Shushkovich told Gorbachev that the country he ruled was gone.
When Gorbachev got the news, he was first silent for a while, then furious, and he asked to speak to Yeltsin. According to Gorbachev's later recollection, he thought that Yeltsin had the consent of the President of the United States and that he had broken up the Soviet Union behind his back, which was shameless and disgraceful!
Gorbachev wanted to meet with the leaders of the three countries the next day, and neither Kravchuk nor Shushkovich wanted to go to Moscow, and finally agreed to let Yeltsin go to Moscow to talk to Gorbachev.
As Yeltsin and Kravchu prepared to leave Belarus, they were reminded that once they left Belarus, Gorbachev would shoot down their plane. Gorbachev had such boldness, the Soviet Union would not have been.
Yeltsin was not afraid, but arrived safely in Moscow, perhaps with the support of the United States. But Kravchuk was careful, claiming to be going to Moscow, but he flew directly to Kiev. When the plane landed at Kiev airport, he saw armed men on the ground and sensed danger. It is said that these ground armed men were specifically designed to protect Kravchuk.
When Crafchuk returned home, his wife asked him, "Is it all over?" Kravchuk replied only ambiguously: the Soviet Union seemed gone. He did not reply to Gorbachev, who in his eyes was no longer his leader.
