Legend has it that Xu lived in a tree in the summer and lived in a cave in the winter, ate the wild fruits of the mountain when he was hungry, and drank the river with his hands when he was thirsty, and was famous for his high and ambitious festival. When the people saw that he did not even have a water jug, they gave him a gourd scoop, and when Xu Yu had finished drinking the water with the scoop, he hung it on the branch of the tree, and the wind blew and made a bell sound. He felt that the sound was disturbing, so he simply took the scoop down and destroyed it.
Emperor Yao's age was getting older, and his son Danzhu was not a tool, so he wanted to find a great sage and give him the world. At the beginning, he heard that there was a Xu Yu most virtuous person in Yangcheng, so he personally visited him.
Yao respectfully said to Xu You:
"The sun and the moon have illuminated the earth, but a small pile of bonfires still want to show their own shimmer, isn't that too difficult?" In time, the rain has fallen, but it is still necessary to irrigate the fields, is it not in vain? When the old gentleman is a monarch, the world can be at peace, and I still occupy the throne, and I feel too careless to go. Allow me to give you the world! ”
Xu Yu's eyes did not lift, and he said slowly:
"You govern the world, you have governed very well, and I am still going to replace you, am I trying to make a name?" That reputation is just an external form of the matter, so why should I work for it? ...... Please go back, I don't need anything to govern the world! Although the cook does not cook, he cannot cross the line! ”
Xu Yu refused to accept Yao's throne, so he fled to the south of Yingshui, under the Ji Mountain, and cultivated the fields and acres, with no intention of becoming an official.
After some years, Yao wanted to ask Xu Yu to be the governor of Kyushu, so he sent an envoy to talk to him. Xu Yu not only refused to be the governor of Kyushu, but also did not want to listen to such words, so he ran to the edge of the water to wash his ears.
It happened that his friend Nest Father, a hermit who used to nest in trees during the summers, led calves to the river to drink. When Father Chao saw Xu Yu washing his ears, he felt strange and asked him, "Do you have something dirty in your ears?" ”
Xu Yu replied, "Yao wants me to come out and be the governor of Kyushu, and I hate this kind of talk in my ears, so I come to wash it." ”
Father Nest listened, rolled his eyes at him and said, "Come on, dude! If you have always lived in the middle of mountains and valleys, in a place of inaccessible people, and you are bent on not letting anyone know, then who can come to your trouble? You deliberately wandered around outside, created a reputation, and now you're here to wash your ears. Don't get my cow's mouth dirty! The nest father said as he led the cattle upstream to drink water.
Xu You lived in the deep mountains from then on, lived in seclusion for life, and was buried at the top of Ji Mountain after his death, so Ji Shan was also called Xu Youshan. It is said that there is still a tomb of Xu Yu on Miyama, there is a morning glory market under the mountain, there is a spring called Calf Spring by the yingshui side, and the hoof prints of the calf are still preserved on the stones, and it is said that this is where the former nest father morning glory drank water.
