Xu surname (1) | the original meaning of the word "Xu" is to recognize and agree, and there may have been a tribe called Xu in ancient times

The first source of the surname Xu comes from the ancient Xu You.

According to scholars, Xu You, also known as Xu You, wuzhong, also known as Daokai, was born in 2155 BC and was the leader of the Xu tribe who lived in the Yingshui Basin during the Yingshui River Basin in the area of present-day Dengfeng City and Xuchang City in Henan.

Xu Yu's morality is high, and he can stand out and govern the Xu tribe in an orderly manner.

If you go back, who is Xu You's ancestor? Some scholars have verified that Xu You's ancestor was Lu Zhong, a descendant of Lu Yu, who had 6 sons, the eldest son, Fan, who was sealed in Kunwu (the ruins of the ancient emperor Qiu Yu), for the Kunwu clan.

During the Yao Shun period, the leader of the Kunwu tribe was Xu You. The Kunwu tribe was destroyed by the Shang Dynasty at the end of the Xia Dynasty, and the surviving descendants migrated to the area around present-day Xuchang, Henan.

Xu Yu refused Emperor Yao's request to abdicate the throne

It is recorded in the "Zhuangzi Getaway" that Xu You's sage name spread far and wide and was known to Emperor Yao, who was ruling the world at that time. Emperor Yao was old and his son Danzhu was mediocre, and he was desperate to find a successor.

After hearing Xu You's fame, Emperor Yao approached Xu You, wanting to give up the world to him, and the two had a conversation.

Emperor Yao said, "The sun and the moon have all come out, and if you don't put out the torches, the light of the torches is simply not worth mentioning compared to the light of the sun and the moon." After a timely rain, it is necessary to irrigate the crops, which is of no use to the seedlings. Comrade brother, you are such a powerful person, if you come to govern the world, you will definitely govern the world better, and I don't have to occupy this position all the time. I brought you here today because I want to entrust the world to you to govern. ”

Xu Yu said, "Brother, you have already governed the world very well." If I take your place, am I not possessing your reputation? I'm actually doing pretty well now, I don't need those fake names. It is said that the wren nests in the forest and occupies only a branch; the mole drinks the river water, but only so that the stomach can drink enough. The world is of no use to me. I see, forget about it! Even if the cook does not cook for the sacrifice, the person in charge of the sacrifice cannot overstep his place and cook in the kitchen. ”

The dialogue between the two gave birth to a famous idiom "Yue Li Dai Ku".

The ancients liked to show off their literary style, implicitly euphemisms, and did not understand what they meant for half a day. Instead, now, just a few words straight away - "You come to sit in the world?" "No!"

Xu You is the most famous hermit in Chinese history

Emperor Yao said that he had been talking for half a day, but Xu Yu was resolute not to do it. He ran to Miyama to live in seclusion, cultivated the land to grow vegetables, and lived a leisurely life.

Emperor Yao is still not dead-hearted, give you the world you don't want, give you a big position you can always accept, right? At that time, the world was divided into Kyushu, and Emperor Yao wanted to appoint Xu You as the governor of Kyushu.

After Xu Yu heard it, he felt that these worldly words had soiled his ears, so he didn't say a word and ran to the river to wash his ears.

Coincidentally, Xu You's friend, another hermit nest father, was leading a calf downstream to drink water, and saw Xu Yu squatting on it to wash his ears. Father Chao was very strange and came up to ask Xu Yu.

Xu Yu told the nest father the reason for washing his ears, and when the nest father listened, he thought that the water that Xu Yu had washed his ears flowed from upstream to downstream, staining the calf's mouth, and quickly led the calf away.

This story has been used by posterity in reverse, which is the origin of the idiom "listening".

The river that Xu You washed his ears, known as the River of Washers, was 36 kilometers long, with an average width of 130 meters and a basin area of about 180 square kilometers in the territory of present-day Ruzhou City, Henan.

Xu You and Chao Father, as hermits at that time, were very famous, and everyone called them Chao Yu or Chao Xu, which also became a special term for later generations to refer to the reclusive.

Xu You became the most famous hermit in Chinese history and is regarded as the originator of the hermit.

After Xu You's death, Emperor Yao made him the Duke of Miyama

As a famous hermit, Xu Yu has many stories.

Cai Yong of the Eastern Han Dynasty said in "Qin Cao, Miscellaneous Songs Between rivers, Ji Shan Cao" that when Xu You lived in seclusion, he lived in a simple wooden house built in the summer, and lived in a cave in the winter, and when he was hungry, he would rely on the mountain to eat the mountain, eat whatever fruits and grain there were on the mountain, and run to the river to drink water when he was thirsty.

He didn't have any cups and often drank from the river with his hands. Someone saw him doing this and gave him a scoop. After Xu Yu drank the water with a scoop, he hung it on a branch. The wind blew branches and scoops, making a sound. Xu Yu was upset to hear this, and took the scoop down and broke it.

This story was later derived into the idiom "a scoop hanging tree", which means that the tall man has no quarrel with the world.

According to historical records, Xu You was a native of Huaili, Yangcheng, that is, the village of Huaili in Donghua Town, Dengfeng City, Henan. After Xu You's death, he was buried at the top of Mount Miyama. Emperor Yao made him the Duke of Miyama, "to be eaten by the Five Peaks, and to be worshipped in the hereafter." Later generations also called Jishan Xuyoushan.

Around The Jishan Where Xu You was active, in the area of present-day Xuchang City, Henan, there are still many legends about Xu You, and a large number of relics related to Xu You have been preserved. There are many villagers with the surname Xu living in Huaili Village, who are said to be the descendants of Xu You.

Xu You's descendants took Xu You's name as a surname, which was a surname for Xu.
