Tan Yuanshou is the fifth generation of Tan Men, his father is Tan Fuying, one of the four major sustenances, his grandfather Tan Xiaopei, and his great-grandfather is Tan Xinpei, the founder of the Tan Sect and known as the "Great King of the Lingjie". Tan Yuanshou was born in 1928, and has been studying art since childhood. His Tan Men plays "Lost Space Chop", "Dingjun Mountain", "Zhan Taiping" and so on have been deeply passed down by his father. His young skills are solid, and he relies on short plays to be exquisite. A performance can be posted in both literature and martial arts. After leaving the department, he successively took Xun Huisheng, Ye Shengzhang and Ye Shenglan's class. In the Yuhua Society, Tan Yuanshou should cross the knife old student, Zhou Yu of Ye Shenglan in the "Heroes of the Crowd", Kong Ming of Tan Yuanshou's former Lu Su, Lu Wenlong of the "Eight Sledgehammers" Ye, and Wang Zuo of Tan. Ma Changli was born in Beijing in 1930, he entered the Beijing Rongchun social science class at an early age to study art, after leaving the subject, he learned from Liu Shengtong and privately shu Yang Pai, painstakingly studied, quite the true meaning of Yang Pai art. After liberation, Ma Changli first joined Wu Suqiu's Municipal Peking Opera Fourth Troupe, and then transferred to the Municipal Peking Opera Second Troupe. Ma Changli's voice is wide and loud and has charm, which is very appreciated by Qiu Shengrong, so Ma Changli sings erlu laosheng to Qiu, like Chen Shimei in "The Case of Beauty" starring Qiu Shengrong, and he came to Liu Xiu in "Yao Period", and the two sang properly, and Qiu was very satisfied. Once Ma Lianliang listened to the radio broadcast Peking Opera, he thought that this young actor was good and could use his voice, so when he met Qiu Shengrong in Tianjin, he said, You have a young man here who is good. Mr. Qiu immediately summoned Ma Changli and asked him to kneel down for Mr. Ma to worship him. However, because At that time, Ma Changli was already preparing to worship Tan Fuying, So Ma Lianliang adopted him as a son.

In 1953, he went to the DPRK with the Second Municipal Troupe to perform condolences and performances, and at the invitation of the Volunteer Army, he starred in "Ganlu Temple", Liu Bei of Tan Fuying, Zhang Fei of Qiu Shengrong, Guo Tai of Li Duokui, Sun Quan of Zhang Hongxiang, and Zhao Yun of Yang Shengchun. Ma Changli came to prominence in the 1950s and attracted the attention and praise of the audience. He and four outstanding young actors, such as cross-talk actor Ma Ji, Beijing Renren opera actor Ma Qun and commentator Ma Tai, are known as the "four horses" of the capital stage.

With the incorporation of the Second Municipal Troupe into the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe, Tan Yuanshou and Ma Changli began a new period of cooperation. They all played important supporting roles in Ma Tan Zhang Qiu's four top performances, such as Huang Tianba who accompanied Qiu Shengrong to sing "Serial Set", and Wang Bodang who accompanied Qiu Shengrong to sing "Broken Secret Stream". In "Orphans of Zhao", tan yuanshou played the orphan Zhao Wu, and Ma Changli played Han Wei, who gave up his life and took righteousness. Although these two characters are supporting roles, their vivid performances add a lot to the whole play, and the later actors have not reached their level.

The Beijing regiment is full of talents, and the four beams and four pillars are complete and hard. In addition to the four top cards staged in turn, the "small group" dominated by young people also performed at the same time, which was also welcomed by the audience, and Tan Yuanshou and Ma Changli were the pillars of the small group. "Heroes Of the Crowd, Borrowing the East Wind" is a popular play that the two have cooperated on the same stage, and the shadows of Ma Lianliang and Tan Fuying can be seen from them.

After 62 years, Tan Fuying fell ill and withdrew from the stage, and in 1963, the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe went to hong Kong to perform, and Tan Fuying was also absent, so Tan's masterpiece and his cooperative repertoire with Ma Zhangqiu were replaced by Tan Yuanshou, Ma Changli, Gao Baoxian, etc. Like Tan Yuanshou accompanied Qiu Shengrong to sing "Will Xianghe", Ma Changli accompanied Zhang Junqiu Qiu Shengrong to sing "Erjin Palace", and Gao Baoxian played Zhao Dun for Tan Fuying in "The Orphan of Zhao". When filming the movie "The Case of Chen Mei", Ma Changli played Chen Shimei for Tan Fuying, while Tan Yuanshou played Han Qi.

Tan Yuanshou and Ma Changli have undertaken important tasks in modern dramas, such as the two starring in "Wisdom Capture habitual bandit mountain carving" Tan playing Shao Jianbo and Ma playing Yang Zirong, Ma playing Lu Jiachuan and Tan playing Jiang Hua in "Song of Youth", and Ma playing Li Danian and Tan playing Batu in "Grassland Beacon". Especially in "Sha Jiabang", Tan played Guo Jianguang of the New Fourth Army, and Ma played the traitor Diao Deyi. The creation of this play has been successfully passed down to this day.

After the Cultural Revolution, the Peking Opera Troupe in Beijing was reorganized, and in 1979 the Beijing Opera House was established, and one of the troupes was basically the original team of the old Beijing Opera Troupe. However, Ma Tanqiu had died, and Zhang Junqiu was later transferred away from the Chinese Drama School, so Tan Yuanshou and Ma Changli replaced him and became old students who hung double-headed cards. During this period, with the revival of the traditional opera boom, Tan Yuanshou performed tan pai bone old dramas "Strange Grievances", "Asking Qiao Noisy Mansion", "Zhan Taiping", "Heishui Yuan" and so on, and Ma Changli performed the horse pai dramas "Ten Old An Liu", "Spring and Autumn Pen", "Rouge Bao fold", "Qing Guan's Examination of Pan Hong" and so on. The audience seemed to have returned to the fiery period of the four top players of the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe. In 1986, the beijing Peking Opera House institutional reform, the theater was adjusted to 6 regiments, Tan Ma was still in a troupe, and Mei Baojiu and Mei Baoyue also joined in. It was not until the end of the 1980s that the two reached retirement age that the cooperation between the two ended.

In November 2016, Ma Changli died of illness at the age of 86. Tan Yuanshou was very sad to hear the news, he said: The two of us are like brothers, artistically we compete with each other, although we are all singing old, but there has never been any slightest estrangement, it is I who let him, he let me. Mr. Tan, who is nearly ninety years old, has great respect for the art of Ma Changli, he said that the artistic attainments of the Changli brothers are very high, I am not as good as the Changli brothers, I have been learning from him all my life, and I want to catch up with him from singing. He also fondly recalled that Ma Changli's family had a deep relationship with our Tan family, and his wife, Xiao Wang Yurong, was the righteous daughter of my father Tan Fuying, and every New Year's Festival, his daughter-in-law and aunt (Du Zhenjie) would come to see me.

From Mr. Tan's words, it can be seen that he and Ma Changli are really a good pair of brothers on the Peking Opera stage.
