Obesity prevention is urgent

In 1997, the World Health Organization defined obesity as a disease for the first time. How can you tell if you are overweight or obese? Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are commonly used indicators. BMI, body mass index, which is the weight (kg) divided by the square of height (m2), is calculated, a BMI value between 18.5-24 is considered healthy, 24-28 is overweight, and greater than or equal to 28 is obese; Waist circumference ≥ 85 cm for ≥men and 80 cm for women is exceeded.

During the meeting, experts emphasized that including the above two indicators, it is necessary to be more vigilant against "invisible obesity", that is, the appearance is not fat, but the body fat content is high, and a large amount of fat will damage organs and increase the risk of related diseases.

The improvement of living standards and lifestyle changes have brought about overnutrition, lack of exercise, irregular work and rest, and gave birth to obesity, a "health killer".

Obesity is a veritable "source of all diseases", which is closely related to hypertension, hyperlipidemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, some specific cancers and other diseases. Over the past 30 years, China's overweight and obesity rates have grown rapidly across all age groups, with an average increase of about 2.5 times, and no group has yet seen a significant inflection point.

In 2020, the National Health Commission released the Report on the Status of Nutrition and Chronic Diseases of Chinese Residents (2020), which showed that the overweight and obesity rate of adults in China reached 50.7%, and 600 million people in China were overweight or obese in terms of absolute population, ranking first in the world. The study predicts that by 2030, the overweight and obesity rate of mainland adults will reach 65.3%, and the medical expenses attributable to overweight and obesity will reach 418 billion yuan, accounting for about 21.5% of the total medical expenses in the country. Obesity prevention is urgent.

Experts said that obesity treatment must be based on a healthy lifestyle, and the interdisciplinary integration of cardiovascular, endocrine, metabolic diseases, weight loss and metabolic surgery, nutrition and other disciplines can jointly build a "moat" for obesity prevention and control.
