Should Palestine join the United Nations? Although the relevant motion was "vetoed" by the United States when it was voted on in the Security Council, in the UN General Assembly vote without a "veto," the overwhelming majority of those who voted in favor of Palestine joining the UN were overwhelmingly in favor, and the international community slapped the United States and Israel in the face with the vote. According to the Observer, on May 10, the 10th emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that Palestine should be admitted to the United Nations, with a specific vote of 143 in favor, 9 against and 25 abstentions. There is no doubt that this is a historic moment for the Palestinians, as their efforts have won the support of the whole world. In this regard, we will talk about three topics.
First, which countries voted in favor of Palestine's accession to the Union?
Among the 143 countries that voted in favor, three of the most representative of the UN P5 countries are China, France and Russia. China and Russia have always been staunch supporters of the two-state solution, and of course they hope that Palestine will become a member of the United Nations and become a country that enjoys the same rights and obligations as Israel.
What is more concerning than China and Russia is France, because France is an ally of the United States and Israel, and the United States and Israel are resolutely opposed to Palestine's accession to the United Nations; in the previous Security Council vote, 12 votes were in favor and 2 abstentions, but only the United States voted in the veto, blocking Palestine from the United Nations. Among the 12 votes in favor was France. In the current UN General Assembly vote, France once again chose to stand with China, Russia, and the majority of the international community and voted in favor of "Palestine's accession to the United Nations."
This also shows that although France is an ally of the United States, it is also the "most independent" of the US allies, and it does not want others to "be the masters" of its own country diplomatically, and hopes to express its own attitude, even if it is not the United States. This is also reminiscent of what French President Emmanuel Macron said during his visit to China last year - China and France are almost the same, and they both have the same temper. What temper? He is not afraid of power, as long as he thinks it is something that upholds international justice, he will do it bravely, and even if he is hated by the world hegemony because of this, he will not back down or regret it.
Although the United States opposes and puts pressure on its allies on Palestine's accession to the United Nations, France still chooses to "do only what is right" and does not blindly follow the United States. It was observed that the European countries that voted in favor of France were Ireland, Norway, Belgium, and Iceland. After casting his vote in favour, the representative of Norway took a photo to take pride in the moment. In addition, among the non-European allies of the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand also voted in favor, which shows how unpopular the United States is in "opposing Palestine's accession to the United Nations," and even its allies do not approve of it.
Second, which countries followed the United States and Israel and voted against? Why did the European majority abstain?
In addition to the United States and Israel, seven other countries voted against: Argentina, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea. Let's not talk about the last four countries, because they are all South Pacific countries, and it has become a "common practice" to follow the United States to vote in the United Nations, which is equivalent to using voting to buy the United States' security asylum. The other two European countries, the Czech Republic and Hungary, are most likely unable to withstand the pressure exerted by the United States.
In particular, Argentina, the previous Argentine governments all supported the "two-state solution" and supported Palestine, but after Milley became president of Argentina, he made it clear that he wanted to move closer to the West and focus on developing relations with the United States and Israel.
As soon as Milley got off the plane, he said that he would move the Argentine embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, and at present, only the United States has done so, which is equivalent to recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and Israel's complete occupation of Jerusalem. In addition, Milley went to the "Wailing Wall" in Jerusalem and made himself cry as a way to express his support for Israel, insisting that Israel's attack on Gaza was "legitimate self-defense" and that he did not say a word about the death of a large number of innocent Palestinian people.
Against this backdrop, it is only natural for Argentina to choose to follow the United States and Israel and vote against it, because for Milley, the vote is just a "prop" for the US-Israel petition, and his government does not care at all whether Palestine can join the United Nations.
Another phenomenon that deserves attention is that as the closest allies of the United States, more than 20 European countries, except for France, Ireland, Norway, Belgium, and Iceland, which voted in favor, and the Czech Republic and Hungary voted against, all of the other 20 countries abstained from voting.
Among these countries are the G7 countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, as well as the "old Europe" such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Sweden. The most striking thing is that even Ukraine, the "proxy of war" heavily aided by the United States, did not follow him, but chose to abstain.
In fact, abstaining from voting is also an attitude. For the United States, first, the team is not easy to lead, and most allies choose to focus on their own national interests and no longer blindly follow; Second, Palestine's accession to the United Nations is the mainstream opinion of the international community, and its importance can also be seen from the new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflicts; the United States has to go against the rest of the world, and European countries are not willing to go along with the United States even if they are pressurized, and even if they abstain, they will not vote against it with the United States.
In fact, in addition to Britain, a "hardcore ally" of the United States in Europe, Canada, another "hardcore ally" in North America, also abstained from voting.
Third, after being slapped in the face by the world, Israel became angry and humiliated the United Nations in public.
After seeing the results of the vote, Israel was a little angry. In fact, before the vote, Israel had threatened the international community that if the resolution on "Palestinian accession to the United Nations" was passed, the United States would refuse to provide expenses to the United Nations and related organizations, that is, "cut off your food." After the United States "vetoed" the relevant Security Council resolutions, Israel's permanent representative to the United Nations, Erdan, publicly threatened the countries that voted in favor, saying that "dialogue with you is like playing the harp, and I hope you still have time to realize how serious your mistakes are."
Later, Erdan also threatened the United Nations, saying that supporting Palestinian membership in the United Nations was "rewarding acts of terror" and that "the days of the United Nations are running out." After the adoption of the resolution on "joining the United Nations", it was this Erdan, in front of all the members, who put the "Charter of the United Nations" into the shredder and humiliated the United Nations and all member states in public, with a very arrogant attitude. Prior to this, the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council had issued a total of five resolutions calling for a ceasefire, but Israel not only failed to implement them once, but also threatened that "no one can stop itself from attacking Rafah."
Such an Israel, in this vote, was directly voted by the international community, and its face was "swollen". Judging from the current situation, Israel has basically fallen into isolation in the international community, and even the United States, which supports Israel, has been "abandoned."
