03 | The truth of tribulation

In the process of preparing the portfolio, Studio provided us with a place to "huddle together for warmth". The students from all over the world are tied together all day long, which can be said to be quite happy. And after a few months of language training, everyone's Chongqing dialect, Shandong dialect and Northeast dialect have also grown a little hahahaha. To get back to the point, in the "difficult beginning" stage, I was originally doing school design classes at home and school, preparing to test the water IELTS, and doing the first project, which was very painful, and I often lamented that life was difficult but I still had to live seriously, etc. Because I am bored, many times my thoughts will be stuck, and I have also encountered situations such as being very tired and annoyed and not wanting to draw.

But after moving to the studio, it was a lot easier. When you are tired, go to someone else's place to hang out and chat a few words, or go downstairs to buy a bottle of happy water, and take a few minutes of rest, you will have the urge to "I can do it, I can fight again", and you can continue to draw happily. In addition, the teachers in the studio regularly come over to check the sketches, or pass by and stand behind the sneer, this kind of supervision can be said to be more effective than spurring.

In terms of design, I have to admit that this is a process of innovation or subversion of architectural design. Putting aside the old ideas, I realized that many things in the world can be discovered for their architectural nature, which means that architectural design is much more than just building a house. For me, the fascinating thing about architecture is that an ordinary person can show the outside world how he sees the world, change the way others live and even optimize the future of a region. You must know that a good design must be supported by the designer's values.

I think that in the studio, whether it is architecture, landscape or interior, our foothold is to care for the entire space environment. Completing such a work is not only a sense of accomplishment, but also a sense of responsibility. And it's this "burden" that makes the job worth the hard work. Based on this concept and relationship, we can explore some of our ambitious ideas and transform them into architecture, and then explore a site to find new unknowns or objects to develop our own concepts.

WHAT I LEARNED AT IMPACT STUDIO IS TO DO EVERYTHING WITHOUT RESERVATIONS, EXCEPT FOR DESIGN. Treat every practice, every process as a kind of self-training. Even if the results are not satisfactory, the experience and wisdom gained will dissolve in your blood and will never go away.

04 | Experience Center Program

The project was designed because it was discovered that people's addiction to social software seemed to be commonplace in this day and age. For example, you must regularly update the news to Weibo, Moments, Instagram, otherwise you will feel uncomfortable; even if you don't read the content seriously, you just like to brush various platforms and brush all kinds of pushes; when you find that the Weibo that has been sent for a period of time has not been forwarded, or there are no comments, you will fall into a deep depression; obsessed with checking in in different places and hanging up the Internet in time to prove that you are still on the front line of the trend.

Many people may think that this is not a big deal, just playing around with their phones, but the inventors have been profiting from the invisible side. Addiction begins with a trigger, an action, a reward or an investment, and is formed through continuous repetition. When these external elements are replaced with internal elements, it means that a psychological connection is formed between the use of the product and the search for emotional needs.

And that means the software has succeeded. Tech companies have been testing people to figure out the best ways to keep them hooked, like modifying the color and shape of Facebook's like like buttons. Behind your phone's screen, there are thousands of engineers trying to make the software as addictive as possible for you. Behind the addiction to Instagram: the formation of the habit of taking photos and videos, the instant return of beautiful filters, and the establishment of intimate social networks. Even Leah Pearlman, one of the inventors of Facebook's like button, is hooked on Facebook because she has begun to base her self-worth on the number of "likes" she has.

Recently, Silicon Valley insiders said on the BBC's program Panorama that social media such as Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter use "behavioral cocaine" to make users addicted to their apps. In fact, the academic community has been focusing on social media addiction for a long time, and a 2017 study in the Netherlands found that the problem also affects the growth of teenagers, and in 2018, a study showed that about 100,000 teenagers in Germany use social media addiction.

The aim of this project is to create a virtual entertainment venue, that is, a spatialized social software, which contains both sarcasm and advice. In this world of entertainment to death, people go from feeling addicted to discovering the truth behind it step by step, and rediscovering themselves in the virtual world.

People are addicted to social networks

Since we want to create a fantasy space where everyone can be the protagonist, we used the elements of the movie to design the framing materials. In the early stages of the design, different types of fantasy spaces were extracted from some classic movie scenes for architectural transformation, arranged in order according to the development of the story, and were used as the prototype of the 8 main spaces of discovery, temptation, transformation, complexity, concurrency, experience, awakening and ending, but they were not completely imitated. The process is very enjoyable and fast, like a child drawing a picture from his imagination. Through hand-drawing and scanning, a slight modification completes the abstract idea and is also the starting point of the entire design idea. Eventually, a series of collages made up of a few representative elements were used to describe the immersive experience in the facilities throughout the space.

Take inspiration for your space design from cinematic lenses

The following two pictures are the whole story. In the form of comics, it tells the story of people who enter the virtual world, from feeling attracted to it, to becoming addicted step by step, and finally discovering the truth behind it and rediscovering themselves in the virtual world. As the story unfolds, the spatial atmosphere can be created through the order relationship of the concrete space, and the narrative elements and the arrangement of the content can interact with people. For example, in the narrative, the narrative is used to suppress and then rise, and in architecture, a long, narrow corridor can be arranged in front of the entrance to a large space. Considering the macro-scale and micro-cohesive cohesion and transition of the architectural narrative, we can use the different spatial forms, scales, materials of different textures, and symbols such as the enclosure, openness, and specific narrative elements of the space to cater to and reflect the narrative content and emotional experience to be expressed by the building.

The experience of coming to the Experience Center

This is the instruction manual for the whole fantasy space. The axis side line artwork clearly shows the form of each space, which can compensate for the incomplete perspective in the story. The dotted line points out the "patchwork relationship" between them, similar to the LEGO production accessories. First of all, it was determined that the site was located on Gulou Street, a historical district in Beijing, a residential area that was a bit insignificant among young people. Secondly, each space has a different structure, attracting participants to gradually enter the interesting interior spaces.

The entrance is a hall of choice for people to be their own minds, the second part of the exhibition hall is an attempt for those who are not familiar with this fantasy world, representing the beginning of contact with social networks, the next part through some reaction towers that allow people to shape various forms from the inside and outside, representing people who are constantly packaging themselves in order to gain the approval of others, and then starting their new journey through a platform.

Before that, it was to satisfy people's vanity and so on to attract people. In the play space, one can reach the highest point of vanity, indulge completely, enter the MCC through the final track, and the giant turntable rotates through the energy of human heat and sound, providing energy for the entire system, and then sending more and more people back to the starting point. The final exit was a long, dark staircase. Such a design means the contrast between the addiction at the beginning and the emptiness at the end, as well as the whole process of indulging in social software and reawakening.

Immersive Experience Center Manual

Finally, two sections, one positive and one negative, are used to reflect what people can see and what they can't see. The visible side is bright, fun and contains a range of entertainment facilities that make people interested in this place. The unsightly side is filled with all sorts of machinery and monitoring towers, and an unknown industry is quietly operating, showing a true perspective on how the facility is maintained and exploited to make a profit.

The visible and invisible sides of the building

This project is a typical narrative architectural design, Wang uses an ingenious perspective to bring non-physical things into the architectural design, so that the architectural design can inspire and touch, so as to achieve the original purpose. Unlike the design of other portfolios, this project showcases architecture through stories, and architecture is also a way to tell stories. Narrative provides more creative possibilities for buildings under the original design, enriches the possibilities of combining architectural elements, and expands the dimension of thinking about architecture. We can think of it as a design training or study, or as a way to articulate our view of the world in a way that we are better at.

05 | Future Library Program

For young people, there are two kinds of libraries in their minds: the first is a book cemetery with rows of shelves and the smell of moldy paper, and you can't wait to grab an out-of-print antique. The second is the tension before the big exam, whether it is a scumbag or a top student, they are rushing into the big space. One is dignified and solemn, paying tribute to the past but falling into ashes, and the other is generous and inclusive, but it seems to have nothing to do with books.

On the contrary, the bustling literary bookstores in those commercial centers have become a new reading mecca with an avant-garde mix. The reason for this is because of the intrusion of new information media. Bookstores with cafes, e-books, and various reading apps are gradually succeeding in taking the top spot in the list of reading tools. The traditional paper library is losing its status and even has a tendency to decline, so what kind of quality will the library of the future take on when it adapts to the new world and is reborn? This project is to use this as a starting point to explore what the library of the future will look like.

First of all, it must be acknowledged that people no longer need to go to a specific library to access knowledge. This leads to the question, is the library a container for books, or a container for people? In this way, we can start thinking, in addition to the inherent label of "reading", what else can the library bring to people? Can it become a new role in the city, and a role that people urgently need? A source of knowledge acquisition and output, a base for the local public to become creators, a place for display and reception. Another important point is that the future library focuses on the imagery captured by the uncertain and brief departure, and its completion is not the end. It should not be clear and complete, because in an undetermined framework, there are countless possibilities that need to happen.

The possibilities of the library of the future are endless

As a debater on whether libraries have a meaning, my first priority is to put the advantages of my competitors, digital media, to good use. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the two, take the essence of the two, and remove the dross. At this time, politics seems to have become very important, and understanding the role of unity and struggle in the development of things is of great significance for us to consciously use these two forces of contradiction to promote the development of things. It shows that the development of things is not only manifested as "opposites complement each other", but also as "complementary". In terms of expression, the moments experienced by all ordinary people in the library and using the Internet reading are extracted as a contrasting item, and a three-dimensional column array is used as a chart to make the characteristics of the two sides stand out through different heights. Use this abstraction with simple annotations to visualize the content of the survey.

Finding a balance between original library and online reading

The future library is crowded in the cracks of the city, directly above the intersection of three roads. This particular location was chosen because it was too unserious and even a bit humble, and it was completely out of touch with the old idea of a library. However, it is this kind of conflict that can give the future library an extreme subversion. The special place is a fusion of the vague spatial experiences of memory: the intersection waiting for the meeting, the overpass with the second-hand book stalls, the roof dedicated to falling in love in the TV series. These tiny scenes that take place in the cracks of the city have become the most important analogies in design.

Can the library of the future be transformed into a generator of beautiful things in the city? Design does not always need to try to create a new possibility, imagination can be triggered by existing experience. The overall map shows the specific location of the project, the surrounding environment, and adds icons and people to show the site. Because Poland is a free and young country, people are keen to walk, walk their pets, sit on the side of the street for picnics or listen to music, and the design process takes into account the lifestyle and attitude of the locals, adding a collage of people's activities to make the design more specific to the site.

Site analysis

The generative analysis diagram of the solution is actually a demonstration of the thought process, which is used to tell people the logic of the design from scratch. The first is to adapt to local conditions and figure out the basic elements of the site, such as roads, sightlines, sunlight, surroundings, etc. Then add personal elements, at this time everyone's thinking is different, and there is no absolute good or bad. For example, in this design, the orthogonal column network needs to be arranged to provide it with the possibility of future redevelopment, so this unfinished definition determines its loose and weakened edges. After putting this rough look in, subtract it according to your own settings. The epidermal part, as the process of its formation has been described above, is slightly changed in this part according to the site factors. The final prototype of a plan was obtained.

Scenario generation process

The form of the future library comes from the fusion of some trivial fragments, and since it is the future, it is not impossible to be imaginative. The story of the material is based on the legend that "by collecting 11 Mayan crystal skulls, you can reveal the mysteries of humanity's past and future". Its specific morphological details are taken from all the ethereal things, converging into a void line, which also reflects the unpredictability and uncertainty of the future.

Morphological extraction process

The preliminary form goes through five steps: extraction, simplification, reconstruction of structural lines, increasing complexity and spatialization, forming the most suitable shape. The final form is like an unfolded ribbon that contains different spaces and thus provides different functional partitions. Cutouts at the folds of the façade surround these spaces, and the peripheral effect cuts off the spatial continuity.

Morphological translation process

The envelope acts as a protective film that contains space and maintains a constant relationship with the outside. Space is changeable, it no longer has a clear contour and questions the self in practice. The light unfolds along the ribbon façade, and the building distributes the light to the central area of the space. The shape of the whole ribbon is both a floor and a wall, both the skin and the structure. The direction of thinking is clear, but the result is unknown. At the same time, in the process of constantly discovering problems and correcting errors, the design is perfected to form a complete creative logic.

The final effect of the space

Curves and straight lines are another conflict and a fusion in this scheme: curves are romantic and comfortable, and straight lines are simple and solemn. Their combination is well adapted to the expected values of the future library. The interior and exterior spaces of the library are represented by renderings of the activities of future characters in the scenes. Inside the building, the poses are varied – you can curl up, stretch, perch on a high place, and sway. The design takes into account ergonomics, allowing the placement of the body to be restored in an interesting way.

Outside the building, people can enjoy the outdoors more conveniently under a white metal frame. They can do all sorts of things like chatting, picnicking, playing musical instruments, etc. The combination of a profile and a silhouette of human activities highlights that people are sitting, lying, standing, or walking, all activities can be accommodated in the library of the future.

Plastic Acoustics won the offer of UCL Edinburgh, and listened to Sister Beijian talk about her architectural world~

Interior and exterior scenes of the future library

The interior space display cannot be avoided, and the space in the future library is diverse to accommodate different human activities. The white frame is inclusive and allows citizens to engage in a wide variety of activities. The small rooms contain very specific projects, such as a storytelling area, a language lab, a place to play games, a plastic arts room, and much more. The transparent base, which opens to the plaza, provides pedestrians with a clear view of the entrance, exhibition space, café and auditorium, allowing the building to emerge from the frame. The balcony on the upper level overhangs the walkway, and an open area for books and information allows plenty of light.

The translucent skin of the building is both its decoration and gives the building a hazy atmosphere. The design also provides a place for users to relax and contemplate. The intimacy of the user is created by a strong architectural element, which stimulates visual interaction. The overall space is fluid, and the expansion of the exterior highlights the impression of infinite space. The "Ribbon" gives full play to its power, and in this uncertain space, the concept of mass seems to disappear and the roof and walls seem to float. The various functional spaces are naturally distributed within the library, maintaining visual continuity.

Sections and the distribution of spatial functions

A transparent, borderless library, scattered between the city and nature, grows and extends quietly and transparently, forming a futuristic library of ubiquitous knowledge and landscapes. This is a "reversal" of a unique type of library that blends the landscape with the boundaries of the city, rather than just the traditional library.

Final renderings

This item consists of comfortable side-by-side placement. The logic of schemes, structures and spaces is different and very rich. This complexity gives rise to a "plastic acoustic" that gives this new place an atmosphere that revisits the relationship between the body and fluidity. This design, which has no clear spatial boundaries, reveals a sense of complexity and unexpected richness. It's a place of freedom.

06 | It's better to be more like family than family

Thanks to the meticulous care of the teachers in the studio, in IMAPCT STUDIO, they are both teachers and elders, leaders and friends. Not only academic problems, but also the difficulties in life are discussed and solved with us. I believe that no matter where you go or what you do in the future, IMAPCT STUDIO will be our home forever.

I must mention that I am really grateful to my classmates like my family at the studio, and those encouragement and positive energy have brought me a lot of strength. I'm sure many people are like me, the more others praise you, the more desperately you don't want to disappoint people who are good to you. The joy that everyone brings together makes me feel that everything is not difficult, but it brings me the most enjoyable time.

I would like to tell my younger students that many of my classmates often mention "anxiety" in the process of making portfolios, and I think of what I.M. Pei said in response to other people's questions about him: "I never think about these questions because I am always immersed in how to solve my own problems." Whatever you do, you're going to encounter all sorts of challenges. Mr. Pei's remark is the best answer I've ever heard.

THEN IS, DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS, A GOOD ATTITUDE IS THE FIRST WEAPON TO SOLVE DIFFICULTIES, THANKS TO IMAPCT STUDIO FOR MY GUIDANCE ON THE ROAD OF ARCHITECTURE, STUDYING ABROAD IS JUST THE BEGINNING, THE FUTURE WORLD AND INFINITE POSSIBILITIES ARE WAITING FOR US TO EXPLORE.
