History of Zagreb:
The recorded history of Zagreb begins in the Middle Ages and originates on two mountains: one is Kaptol, where the present-day Zagreb Cathedral is located; The other is Gradec. In 1850, the two settlements merged and Zagreb was born.

Zagreb was also the center of the Illyrian movement. Duke Janko Draskovic, owner of Trakoscan Castle, issued a statement in Illyrian in 1832 calling for the revival of the entire Croatian nation. After World War I, Croatia and its capital Zagreb joined the Kingdom of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, and Trakošca's dream came true.
During the interwar period, working-class neighborhoods in Zagreb emerged between the railway and the Sava River, and newly built residential areas on the southern slopes of the Medvenica hills. In April 1941, Germany invaded Yugoslavia and drove straight into Zagreb. Ante Pavelić and Ustaše quickly proclaimed the establishment of an independent Croatian kingdom with Zagreb as its capital. Although Pavelić was based in Zagreb, he never received support from the capital, which had always supported Tito's guerrillas.
In post-war Yugoslavia, Zagreb (very depressed) became the second largest city under Belgrade, but the city was growing. Zagreb became the capital of Croatia in 1991, the same year that Croatia gained independence.
