The U.S. Department of Agriculture airdropped 3.75 million doses of oral rabies vaccine for wild animals in helicopters in 13 states, either packaged with fishmeal attractants or wrapped in fishmeal chunks, and tests found that it was safe for more than 60 animals, and dogs would have stomach upset if they ate a large amount of vaccine, but would not have long-term symptoms.

The vaccine is mainly given to raccoons, which are the main reservoirs for rabies viruses in these states. Bats account for 35% of rabies cases in wild animals, but bats eat insects, nectar and fruit and do not touch the vaccine.

A three-year project in Arizona and New Mexico has successfully cleared a bat rabies virus from foxes and is currently trying to control the spread of the dog rabies vaccine strain among coyotes at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is testing the effects of the new vaccine in skunks and raccoons in Canada.
