"The bird had a handful of black feathers on its head, like a crested feather, and it was called a crested grebe. Look closely at its back, there are two little babies on it...... "On April 24, near the wooden plank road of Baigui Lake Wetland, the staff of the Municipal Forest Resources Monitoring and Protection Center introduced the birds on the lake to the citizens who came to play.

April 21-27 is the 43rd Bird Week in Henan Province, and this year's theme is "Improving the Conservation System and Protecting Migratory Birds". Recently, the Municipal Forestry Bureau and the Municipal Forest Resources Monitoring and Protection Center have successively carried out bird love week activities in Lushan and urban areas to publicize the concept of ecological civilization and bird protection knowledge, and further improve the public's awareness of protecting wild animals and their living space.

It is the breeding season for migratory birds

The baby crested grebe steals the show

The White Turtle Lake wetland in April is full of vegetation. Near the small island in the middle of the lake facing the wooden plank road, flocks of water birds chased and frolicked, among which the picture of the crested grebe couple traveling with their babies attracted the attention of many citizens.

The four baby crested grebes are covered with black and white longitudinal stripes, fluffy and very cute. They lay on their parents' backs, their little heads exposed, and they looked around curiously. During this time, the crested grebes will dive into the water, catch some small fish and insects to feed the baby, and from time to time flap their wings to lift the baby into the water and teach the little ones to swim. Occasionally, when other waterfowl approach, they flapped their wings to drive them away.

It is the breeding season for migratory birds. According to Liu Xiaoping, a senior engineer at the city's Forest Resources Monitoring and Protection Center, there are hundreds of crested grebes near this small island in the middle of the lake alone. This spring, they monitored nearly 20 crested grebe couples making their home on the island. At present, the little crested grebes are coming out of their shells one after another. In addition, the island is also home to birds such as spot-billed ducks, egrets, grey starlings, and golden-rumped swallows.

Carry out special surveys of birds

Establishment of a wildlife rescue station

Birds are an important indicator group to measure the ecological environment. Last year, the Municipal Forestry Bureau successively carried out the "2023 Qingfeng Action", "Net Shield Action", and special governance actions for bird protection in the city, focusing on cracking down on illegal hunting, illegal sales, illegal transportation and illegal online trading of wild animals and other illegal and criminal acts, investigating and rectifying the use of e-commerce, live broadcasts, short videos and other transactions of wild animals, inspecting farmers' markets, flower and bird markets, breeding farms (households), hotels and restaurants, processing plants and other physical places, cleaning up 106 net clips, and investigating and handling 4 cases of wild animals. In addition, the city's first wildlife rescue station was established in the Municipal Zoo to provide timely and scientific rescue to injured wild animals.

Last year, a total of 262 wild animals were rescued in the city, including 109 national first- and second-class protected animals, and the survival rate of the rescue exceeded 90%. In addition, the city has also carried out a survey on the population and habitat of white-crowned pheasant and red-bellied pheasant, as well as special surveys on Chinese mergansers, Baer's pochard, black stork, etc. At present, the conservation and research of regional biodiversity and key protected wild animals have been completed, and 43 species of wild animals of 11 orders, 26 families and 11 orders have been monitored in the survey area, including 27 species of birds of 6 orders, 15 families.

Construction of 17 nature reserves

255 species of birds inhabit Eagle City

According to Wei Chenwei, a staff member of the Nature Reserve and Wildlife Conservation Section of the Municipal Forestry Bureau, in recent years, the city has coordinated the construction of five major ecosystems of forests, wetlands, watersheds, farmland and cities, and promoted a series of foundation-laying and long-term work, especially the breakthrough progress in the protection of nature reserves and wild animals, ranking third in the province in 2023. At present, the city has built 17 nature reserves of various types, including 2 nature reserves, 1 scenic spot, 2 geological parks, 6 forest parks and 6 wetland parks. Our city is rich in wetland types, including tidal flats, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, swamps, etc. The ecological environment continues to improve, providing a good space for birds to inhabit and reproduce.

According to the survey and monitoring, there are 369 species of terrestrial vertebrate wild animals in the city, including 255 species of birds, including 25 species of national first-class protected birds. In recent years, endangered species such as Baer's Pochard, Black Stork, Great Bustard, Oriental White Stork have appeared in urban areas, Lushan and other places, and the number of red-headed gulls wintering in Pingping has increased year after year, and the Baiguihu Wetland and Lushan Shahe Wetland have become the city's beautiful ecological business card.
