On April 29, according to the market research institute IDC released a research report on the global smartphone market and the Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter of 2022.

Global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2022 fell 8.9% compared to the same period last year. That means the smartphone market has been falling for three consecutive quarters, with shipments falling to 314.1 million units in that quarter, about 3.5 percent lower than IDC's forecast for February.

IDC research director Nabila Popal said some declines in the first quarter were expected, the market continued to face supply and logistics challenges, consumer sentiment in all regions, especially in China, was generally negative, and serious concerns around inflation and economic instability dampened consumer spending. This, combined with rising components and transportation costs, and the recent lockdown in Shanghai, exacerbates an already difficult situation.

In addition, Russia invaded Ukraine, affecting the region. With all these uncertainties in mind, most OEM manufacturers are adopting a more conservative growth strategy in 2022.

From a regional perspective, the clear declines are in Ukraine, Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe. Shipments across the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region fell nearly 20 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, with the outlook for many of these markets remains uncertain. However, in terms of shipments, Central and Eastern Europe only accounts for 6 to 7% of global shipments and 5% of revenue. The biggest decline in global shipments came from China and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for nearly half of all global shipments, down 12.3% (combined) in the first quarter of 2022.

IDC said that while the environment is challenging, the ranking of suppliers has not changed much in the first quarter of 2022.

Samsung is leading the way in supplier competition, ranking first with 73.6 million unit shipments and a 23.4% market share, which is also Samsung's highest market share since the first quarter of 2018.

Apple ranked second with 56.5 million units shipped and an 18.0% market share.

Chinese smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo ranked third to fifth with market share of 12.7%, 8.7% and 8.1% respectively, with shipments of 39.9 million units, 27.4 million units and 25.3 million units respectively.

It can be seen that compared with the same period last year, in the first quarter of this year, among the top five manufacturers, only Samsung and Apple maintained the same cloth growth in shipments and market share, while the shipments and market share of Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo have declined. This is also directly related to the sharp decline in xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo's market shipments in the Chinese mainland in the first quarter.

According to the relevant data of China's top five smartphone manufacturers released by IDC in the first quarter of 2022, the top five domestic manufacturers shipped oppo (13.7 million units), Honor (13.5 million units), vivo (13.3 million units), Apple (12.4 million units), and Xiaomi (11 million units).

IDC pointed out that OPPO ranked first in the domestic market in terms of shipments in the first quarter, mainly due to the stable sales performance of new products. In the first quarter, the proportion of sales volume in OPPO's online channels increased. In addition, in the first quarter, OPPO also launched a series equipped with the self-developed image NPU chip Mariana MariSilicon X.

However, from the perspective of the year-on-year increase in shipments, Honor is the only one among the top five manufacturers to maintain growth, and the largest increase, with an increase of up to 291.7%, which is mainly related to its relatively low shipment base shortly after it became independent in the first quarter of last year. Of course, since last year, Honor has grown rapidly with a variety of hot models, and it took only one year to reach the second position in China.

Among the five manufacturers, OPPO, vivo, Apple, and Xiaomi all experienced a year-on-year decline in shipments in the first quarter, of which vivo fell the most, reaching 35.1%, OPPO fell by 33.5%, Xiaomi fell by 18.4%, and Apple fell by 5.8%.
