The "Big Snowflake" of the Winter Olympics was unveiled at the Tsinghua Art Museum, and the design team revealed the wisdom behind it

The Winter Olympic Torch Platform and the Winter Olympic Snowflake Design have changed their drafts several times, and finally made a stunning appearance; the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Paralympic Games, from "concentric circles" to "gramophones", one by one ingeniously integrated into the beautiful visual design; the Winter Olympic cityscape, the landmark landscape building "Haituo Tower", the designer will integrate art and industry, leaving the Memory of the Winter Olympics for the city; under the blessing of modern science and technology, the digital ice and snow experience museum theater line will also land and become the cultural heritage of the Winter Olympics...

At the Art Museum of Tsinghua University, a "Co-nurturing the Future - Olympic Science and Technology Art Exhibition" brings together the works related to the Beijing Winter Olympics by more than 10 teacher teams of the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University, and presents the cultural connotation of Olympic "power and beauty" in multiple dimensions by creating an immersive interactive experience image space, so that the audience can perceive the Olympic spirit through science and technology art and pursue the Olympic road.

Virtual and real combined to "deconstruct" the Winter Olympic torch platform

The "big snowflakes" composed of 96 "small snowflakes" dance around the "silver ribbon". During the Beijing Winter Olympics, the torch platforms outside the three major competition areas attracted countless attentions and were permanently retained after the games, becoming a beautiful memory of the International Olympic Games. In the museum, the audience can also get a glimpse of the "original appearance" of the torch stand and understand the story behind it.

Walking into the exhibition hall, you will be greeted by a large curved screen and a model of the torch stand that is equally scaled down, and the animation played in the large screen reveals the exquisite structure and design process of the torch stand. The off-site torch platforms in the three divisions were all designed by Marseille, Secretary of the Party Committee of tsinghua academy of fine arts. From November 2020 to receive the task, the team teachers and students worked day and night to draw and design, in more than a month to make 9 sets of different plans, in March 2021, after many analysis, discussion after the locked snowflake image plan, stood out from many candidates.

Torch stand modification scheme

According to the team of Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts, different from the traditional static torch platform, the torch platform is the first time to present the new aesthetics of the Winter Olympic art through the form of dynamic sculpture, and on the basis of the main torch of the opening ceremony, the surrounding "silver ribbon" and the mirror chassis are added, which plays a role in structural support and stability. The "silver ribbon" tightly haunts the big snowflakes symbolizing the future of the world and regions hand in hand, showing a non-uniform two-way concentric movement, adding a time dimension and visual dynamics to the statically placed torch. Presenting the shape of high and low ups and downs at different angles is an abstract expression of the speed, passion, rhythm, and jumping characteristics of many winter Olympic games. The ever-changing surrounding environment and the viewer are integrated into the work, becoming part of the torch dynamic sculpture, highlighting the Olympic theme of "more unity" and "together to the future" around the world.

The design of the torch stand also fully integrates the requirements of art and engineering technology, reflecting the requirements of "simple, safe and wonderful" Winter Olympic Games. At the beginning of the concept, the team considered the aesthetics of the modeling and the implementation of the ground in parallel, and repeatedly deliberated, simulated and demonstrated the feasibility of the modeling production and installation of the torch stand. In order to ensure that the "big snowflakes" can steadily and continuously complete the "concentric two-way rotation" in the cold and strong winds, the team also invited the professors of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering of Tsinghua University to collaborate across disciplines to complete the optimization of material, structure, gas function and other aspects.

Winter Olympic snowflake pattern design first draft "debut"

At the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, the "small snowflakes" of the delegations gathered into a "big snowflake", and the scene of slowly rising above the bird's nest was impressive. In the exhibition hall, traces of "small snowflakes" can also be found. The familiar melody of "Snowflake" sounded, a large screen, a novel shape of snowflake patterns presented in turn, some design elements integrated with national and regional landmark architectural patterns, some were given peony, purple and gold flowers and other traditional Chinese auspicious patterns, these are the "predecessors" of the Winter Olympic snowflake pattern, this exhibition is their "debut".

Little snowflakes of the Delegation of Mexico

The Winter Olympic snowflake shape was created by Tsinghua University students Li Min and Song Chen over a period of three years. Each snowflake is built on the basis of a Chinese knot, embodying the vision of the world family "going to the future together". In order to present this unique snowflake, the two designers have drawn more than 300 drafts of snowflake patterns in the past three years, from the initial collection of many real snowflake pictures in nature, querying various design patterns, and then extending to architectural patterns, etc., after repeated modifications, and finally forming what everyone sees now. Snowflake modeling not only conveys Chinese aesthetic ideas to the world, but also conveys to the world the Chinese concept of "beauty and commonality".

The opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Paralympic Games were co-created by Wang Zhigang, director of the Department of Information Art and Design of Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts, as the video director, and co-created by a number of top visual design teams in the United Nations and outstanding teachers and students from many universities. Since February 2020, the design team has experienced hundreds of online and offline meetings, repeated creative updates and iterations, and continuous coordination and polishing with various professional departments. For such a high-resolution video, each output is very time-consuming, every promotion, every modification according to the opinions of the director team, the design team needs to race against time, think of an optimal adjustment plan, meet each row and review, can achieve the best results.

The opening ceremony of the Winter Paralympic Games is displayed in the exhibition hall

The opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Paralympic Games were respectively themed on the themes of "the bloom of life" and "eternity in warmth", and the design team introduced that its design concept went beyond the concept of ice and snow, and more presented the brilliant world of the disabled, and focused more on the individual "human" level. From the "concentric circles" of the opening ceremony to the "gramophone" of the closing ceremony, the visual design not only shows the visual impact of the grand narrative, but also takes into account the local warm and touching dramatic performance.

The figure skating exhibition light and shadow show "moved into" the exhibition hall

The floating snowflake light and shadow create the image of the figure skating female athlete, from the ethereal and beautiful texture to the romantic and shocking snowflake stage, the ribbon formed by the movement trajectory follows the female athlete into the landscape, and another male athlete dances with it, hand in hand to open the wonderful curtain of the "kaleidoscope" world... This 3D naked-eye effect of the light and shadow show was created by the team of Wu Qiong, professor of the Department of Information Art Design of Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts, snowflakes as a visual creative element throughout, while integrating the elements of Chinese culture, blue and white porcelain, Dunhuang pattern, Chinese knot, The Great Wall, Tiggo, peony flower and other exquisite details to form a unique language symbol, presenting the world with cutting-edge achievements in the integration of art and science and technology.

The design team revealed that the light and shadow show contains a lot of "black technology". Among them, the acquisition of athlete movements and trajectories mainly comes from three-dimensional athlete tracking technology, shooting the athlete's training process from different angles, intelligently analyzing and processing the collected video data through artificial intelligence algorithms, and the design team re-presents the captured athlete posture and trajectory with points and lines on the basis of these data and models, showing the strength, speed and artistic sense of figure skating.
