Wu Guanzhong has deep roots in Hong Kong, and he has set foot in Hong Kong many times to hold art exhibitions, and is often invited to attend academic seminars and lectures. He also went to the streets of Hong Kong to sketch, and his paintings were often based on Hong Kong urban objects. In 2002, Wu Guanzhong gave his first (and only) public sketching demonstration at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, braving the rain to depict the scenery of Victoria Harbour, which became a good story in the art world. He greatly appreciated Hong Kong's cultural environment, and once made it clear that Hong Kong is a place of institutional justice, practical work and authenticity, and is the intersection of his "can see the East and can also see the West", which coincides with his artistic creation.
Wu Guanzhong once said that his best works were to be left to the country and the people, and donated works to public museums at home and abroad many times before his death. Over the years, he and his family have donated more than 450 to the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and together with two paintings purchased by the Museum in the early days and donations from private collectors, the Hong Kong Museum of Art has become the art institution with the largest and richest collection of Wu Guanzhong's works, and has become one of the important centers for the collection and research of modern Chinese paintings in the world.
This precious collection includes Wu Guanzhong's oil paintings and ink paintings from figurative to abstract, paintings from the "dung basket" period in the countryside in the 1970s, sketches of many classic paintings, as well as personal documents such as manuscripts of articles, picture boxes and painting tools, certificates for studying in France, and medals awarded by the French government, which fully present the important course of the artist's creation for more than half a century, which is of great historical and artistic value, and also bears witness to the precious friendship between Wu Guanzhong and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
