Information丨The road to popularization has a long way to go: this year's DDR5 memory share will reach 10%

Last year, with the emergence of the 12th generation of Core, DDR5 memory also officially appeared on the stage, and the DDR5 era officially opened.

As a new generation of memory, DDR5 has a much higher frequency than the previous generation, and the performance has certainly improved a lot, but due to the change of its slot, it is not compatible with the DDR4 motherboard, and as a new product, the price is certainly not cheap, these reasons have also led to many users are still reluctant to replace DDR5 memory.

In a recent report, Omdia mentioned that the market share of DDR5 memory will reach 10% in 2022, and the market share will be further increased to 43% until 2024, and if the share of DDR5 wants to exceed half, it is estimated that it will be at least until 2025.

Although it seems like a long time, in fact, it took a lot of time for DDR4 to become popular.

In 2011, Samsung Electronics announced the official manufacture of the world's first DDR4 memory, and in 2012 DDR4 was officially introduced to the market. According to a research report released by TrendForce in November 2020, the overall share of DDR4 memory has reached more than 90%: of which the PC industry share has reached 96.7%, the server industry share has reached 98%, the consumer electronics industry has the lowest proportion, and the DDR4 memory has only 69.4%.

If you calculate according to this time of DDR4, in fact, the popularity of Omdia for DDR5 memory above is actually reasonable. Although DDR5 memory does not seem to be used by too many people now, there is actually a reason. Because at present, only Intel 12th generation processors support DDR5 memory on the desktop side, and the mobile side is also supported by the 12th generation Core Mobile Edition and the Ryzen™ 6000 series.

Starting from the second half of this year, the popularity of DDR5 should be increased, after all, the 13th generation of Core is about to be released, and the new Zen4 architecture Ryzen™ 7000 series processors will also be released, these products will support DDR5 memory and further optimize it.

According to Tom's Hardware, AMD and Samsung held a webinar this week to discuss the new DDR5 and LPDDR5X memory. Topics discussed by AMD and Samsung reportedly include AMD's Ryzen™ 7000 desktop platform memory overclocking, Samsung's DDR5 and LPDDR5X DRAM chips, among others.

AMD said that AMD's Ryzen™ 7000 processor is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated desktop platforms in 2022. Not only does it bring DDR5 memory support to Ryzen, but it's also based on the next-generation Zen4 microarchitecture, which will deliver a tangible performance boost over the existing Zen3. AMD memory expert Joseph Tao also mentioned that the Ryzen™ 7000 platform will have good memory overclocking support.

At the PPT at this conference, AMD and Samsung mentioned the DDR5-6400 and LPDDR5X-8500 memory specifications, which may be supported by AMD's new generation of desktop and mobile processors. The current AMD Ryzen™ 6000 mobile processor supports DDR5-4800 and LPDDR5-6400 memory. It is expected that the LPDDR5X-8500 high frequency memory will have a significant improvement in nuclear display performance.
