Dell recently released a new Precision 2022 mobile workstation product line, in addition to the first Intel's top 12th generation Alder Lake-HX series Core Mobile edition processor, also provides graphics options up to RTX 3080 Ti, while bringing a new CAMM DDR5 memory form.
CAMM, known as "Compression Attached Memory Module", is a standard jointly created by Dell and memory manufacturers and Intel, and is a new form of traditional SO-DIMM notebook memory.
Under CAMM technology, the thickness of the memory is 57% thinner, and the maximum capacity of a single strip is 128GB, which is very suitable for workstations that require large amounts of memory. However, when using the 128GB capacity CAMM DDR5, its frequency is only 3600MHz, while 64GB, 32GB, 16GB is the standard 4800MHz. Not only that, CAMM DDR5 does not support ECC memory self-test, which will also cause some losses to workstations.
At the physical level, camm is a larger PCB board with memory particles mounted on both sides and fixed to a special CAMM Compress interface using two upper and lower plates. In terms of capacity, 128GB and 64GB require double-sided PCBs, and 32GB and 16GB are single-sided; The capacity of a single memory particle is 2GB, and 64 chips, 32GB, 16 and 8 chips are used to achieve 128GB, 64GB, 32GB and 16GB respectively.
If the user does not need special memory, the Dell Precision 2022 series offers standard DDR5 SO-DIMMs, including single 8GB, 16GB, dual 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, all at 4800MHz, with optional support for ECC.
Dell offers the CAMM memory option for the Precision 2022 Mobile Workstation, as well as a stand for converting to SO-DIMMs, allowing mobile workstations to be compatible with standard notebook memory at the same time.
