Kang Wansheng was born in Jilin Province in 1946, and when he was 6 years old, his family went to Tianjin to make a living. When he was in elementary school, he passed by the Xinkai road Yaoyin Peking Opera Club every day, which was the famous box office at that time, and many famous characters went there to sing operas, and every time he would stand at the door and listen for a while. His brother Kang Wansong also loved Peking Opera, but the family conditions were not good, so his brother became a worker for his younger brother to learn opera.
Kang Wansheng was admitted to tianjin opera school at the age of 13, and was the youngest and shortest among the candidates. In the summer of 1979, the old regimental leader Zhao Feng and the veteran actor Yang Ronglou took Kang Wansheng to the Shandong Provincial Peking Opera Troupe, where they worshiped Fang Rongxiang, the eldest disciple of Qiu Shengrong, as their teacher. Fang Rongxiang taught Chisang Town, The Case of Gongmei, Yao Period and other plays, Kang Wansheng sang to the teacher, asked the teacher to correct, especially remember the teacher's requirements: use dantian qi, work the mouth, and work the hand, eye and body steps.

Every Peking Opera actor who has become a character can tell a lot of stories that "drama is bigger than the sky". In the early morning of the fifteenth day of the first month of 1989, Kang Wansheng's mother died, he and his family ran the funeral together, but there was a performance that night, the tickets had been sold, he decided to still want to go on stage, that day was to play "The Great Detective II", he played Xu Yanzhao, the mood was too complicated. In June 1989, when he went to Hong Kong to perform, his teacher Fang Rongxiang died of a heart attack, and when he heard the news, Kang Wansheng cried in his room.
In 1994, Kang Wansheng's wife suddenly suffered a cerebral embolism, and when she was 47 years old, she was sent to Huanhu Hospital for rescue and saved her life, but she was half-dead and could not take care of herself. Kang Wansheng took a leave of absence with the group to take care of his wife, and then took her to Beijing for medical treatment. Come back at home and ask the doctor to come to acupuncture, massage, cupping. In order to take care of his wife, he did not perform for two years, and then his daughter resigned to take care of her wife at home, and he returned to the stage.
