Snowdrift White: A mysterious name

This is a statue of a mother Buddha with a large white umbrella covered in bronze gilded gold nearly half a meter high.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Great White Umbrella Cover Buddha Mother is incarnated from shakyamuni's top bun and can protect all sentient beings and ensure the peace of the city-state with the umbrella in her hand.

This is the large white umbrella covered Buddha mother gilt gold and silver statue in the Collection of Noblinka in Lhasa, which is equally exquisitely crafted but better preserved.

Through comparison, experts found that the structure and shape of the two statues are almost identical. It can be basically judged that they come from the same batch of designs, and can even be said to be the works of the same craftsman.

In Tibet in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, only "snow pile white" could achieve such a level of craftsmanship. Only the statue of "snow pile white" can achieve such luxury.

The first excavation of "Discovering Lhasa" reveals the historical and cultural context of important intangible cultural heritage such as "Snowdrift White", and fully expresses the historical value and practical achievements of the inheritance and protection of important intangible cultural heritage in Lhasa and even Tibet.

The three words "snow pile white" are derived from the Transliteration of the Tibetan language, in which "pile white" means "who can build all the things that enjoy the goods".

Located at the foot of the Potala Palace, the ancient "Snowdrift White" is a government-run institution that has represented the highest level of Tibetan handicraft since the Ming Dynasty.

The items made by "Snowdrift White" are various and distinctive.

There are all kinds of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Buddha-figures, and Protector statues in the style of freehand, various metal stupas, spiritual pagodas and mandalas, but also realistic style statues of gurus, high-end living utensils used by the court and nobles, various religious utensils such as exquisitely textured dharma instruments and offerings, as well as some official seals with metal textures, coin molds, etc., which shows the luxurious life of the upper-class monks and nobles in Tibet at that time.

The murals of the Potala Palace have gone through vicissitudes, and the digital collection work carried out by Tashi Tsering's team aims to preserve and display their original appearance. Their job is to race against time.

The Potala Palace has more than 2,500 square meters of murals spanning more than 300 years.

Although it has undergone several large-scale protective repairs by the national cultural relics department, there are still empty drums, nails, and crisp alkali to varying degrees. This has brought great difficulties to the digital collection of Tashi Tsering's team.

But among them, there are also many interesting findings:

Potala Palace Phuntsok Tso Dulang is the door to the White House, across the Phuntsok Dulang, it can be seen that the two sides of the porch are painted with four heavenly kings, the painting style is meticulous, lifelike, this group of murals is from the "Sojiong" famous painter Uchin Tsering Jiuwu, because of the long beard, known as the beard painter.

Thanks to the country's huge investment in cultural relics protection science and technology, in addition to protective maintenance, digital records are also an important means of preserving murals.

The Digital Center of the Potala Palace began the digital collection of murals in August 2015 and took four years to basically complete. The whole process is shot with 1:1 high-precision reproduction, not missing a single tiny detail, and recording each mural with up to 4 billion pixels of ultra-high precision.

Under the lens of the camera, the pages of the scriptures are beautifully written, the paper is very well preserved, and time does not seem to leave too many traces on them.

It can be preserved intact, and the rare insect moth is due to the special raw material of traditional Tibetan paper - wolf poison grass.

During his idle days, Tsering Dorje would go up the mountain in search of wolf poison weeds.

Although the wolf poison weed that cattle and sheep avoid is poisonous, it is a good thing in the eyes of Tsering Dorje. The poisonous part of the wolf poison grass is the root, and that is exactly what Tsering Dorje needed.

Back at home, Tsering Dorje placed the treated lupus root fibers in boiling water while adding soda ash to soften the fibers and separate impurities.

After boiling the finished wolf poison grass, under countless times of tumbling and pounding, the fibers of the stem and root can be evenly stretched, and then mixed with an appropriate amount of water to stir into pulp.

After 6 hours of labor, a piece of Tibetan paper was awakened by the sun in the courtyard of Tsering Dorje, at this moment, the wild wolf poison grass was given new strength, and the amazing wisdom that people burst out in the face of the harsh natural environment of the plateau was also vividly displayed at this moment...
