Back in 2019, GM filed a request with NHTSA to try to avoid a recall of its GMC Terrain models, which involved about 727,000 GMC Terrain SUVs that were called for recall because their headlights were too bright and could cause glare to oncoming drivers. However, GM claims that the problem has not affected driving safety. In a statement from GM, the company said its vehicle headlights meet accepted industry standards and received only one customer complaint.

However, a document recently posted online by NHTSA rejected the request. NHTSA said the car's front light beam brightness was three times higher than the allowable value and therefore did not meet the standard. While GM said it was reviewing the decision and trying to sort out next steps, it was likely to have to recall terrain models made between 2010 and 2017 after NHTSA rejected the company's request not to be in connection with the recall. Although there have been frequent recalls of vehicles since 2022, it is indeed very rare to be recalled because the lights are too bright.
