After turning the torch into a "micro-fire", the carbon emissions generated are about one-thousandth of what it was before. Xiaomo also learned that the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will use hydrogen energy as a torch fuel for the first time. In this Winter Olympics, all the torch relays in the territory use hydrogen fuel, and a large number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are used during the event to reduce pollution emissions, reflecting the further combination of the Olympic spirit and "green" and "environmental protection". This is also complementary to our country's commitment to the world in 2020: strive to achieve carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060" goal.

We all know that plants photosynthesize, absorb carbon dioxide, and make oxygen. However, after human beings entered the Industrial Revolution, they used a lot of fossil resources, such as coal, oil, natural gas, etc. While promoting the rapid development of human industry, the combustion of fossil resources also emits a large amount of carbon dioxide and pollutants. At present, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen from 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution to more than 410 ppm, and it continues to rise.

Scientific studies have shown that the increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to rising global average temperatures, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and the release of viruses in frozen soils, which may threaten the survival of human beings. If the global temperature rises by four degrees, global sea levels will rise by 0.5 to 1.4 meters from now, posing a serious threat to the survival of many coastal cities and a huge disaster for the survival and development of human beings.

Therefore, the early realization of carbon neutrality has become the consensus of various countries, and China has also proposed the goal of "achieving carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060" in 2020.

So, what is carbon neutrality and how to achieve carbon neutrality?

Carbon neutrality, as the name suggests, is that the emission and absorption and utilization of carbon dioxide are balanced, and the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere no longer increases.

To truly achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, it is necessary to support domestic independent advanced science and technology, one is to find ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions without affecting economic and social development, and the other is to absorb and utilize carbon dioxide that has been emitted into the atmosphere.

Academician Li Can's team from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences broke through the key technologies of renewable energy solar electrolysis of water to produce green hydrogen and carbon dioxide hydrogenation to liquid sunlight (methanol), and synthesized liquid fuel methanol using solar energy, water and carbon dioxide, while realizing renewable energy utilization and carbon dioxide emission reduction. The methanol produced by this technology is different from the traditional methanol, the entire production process not only does not produce carbon dioxide, but also uses the carbon dioxide already emitted to synthesize high value-added methanol fuel, providing a practical technical path for carbon neutrality, and has built the world's first set of large-scale demonstration projects for the synthesis of 1,000 tons of liquid sunlight in Lanzhou, mainland China, which has been successfully commissioned in 2020 and completed the identification of results, and at present, it is carrying out 100,000 tons of liquid sunshine industrialization.

The use of renewable energy to produce green hydrogen energy, not only can be directly used as energy, but also to solve the traditional chemical process of fossil resources hydrogen production brought about by high carbon emissions, green hydrogen energy as a hub and bridge, become the key node of the energy Internet, the use of hydrogen energy and derivative fuels can achieve large-scale long-cycle, economical energy storage. Further, the use of renewable energy to produce green hydrogen and carbon dioxide coupled to generate methanol and other liquid fuels, so that the energy of renewable energy is stored in liquid fuels, providing a practical new technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and store renewable energy.

The utilization of carbon dioxide resources represented by the liquid sunlight technology that couples carbon dioxide and renewable energy to hydrogen can not only help the mainland achieve carbon neutrality, but also store low-grade renewable energy in the form of chemical energy, open up the channel between chemicals and energy, and have far-reaching significance for the development of the mainland's energy and economic structure adjustment, chemical industry, energy storage industry, etc. It is roughly estimated that liquid sunlight replaces coal chemical methanol, which is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 400 million tons per year; the use of renewable energy power generation (photovoltaic, wind power, hydropower, and even nuclear power) to synthesize liquid solar methanol, consume GW or more of electricity, used to replace gasoline/diesel fuel, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 billion tons, directly providing an effective solution to the achievement of carbon neutrality goals. In addition, the programme will help mitigate the continent's energy security problems of dependence on oil imports.

Li Can, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher, doctoral supervisor.

He was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries in 2005, and a foreign academician of the European Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences in 2008. He has served as the director of the National Laboratory for Catalysis Foundations, the chairman of the Council of the International Society of Catalysis and the chairman of the 16th International Conference on Catalysis (ICC16), the director of the Catalysis Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society, the director of the Solar Energy Research Department of the Dalian Institute of Chemistry and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the dean of the School of Chemistry and Materials of the University of Science and Technology of China.

His research interests include catalytic materials, catalytic reactions and spectral characterization. In the early stage, the ultraviolet Raman spectrometer for catalytic research was successfully developed, which solved several important scientific problems in the field of catalysis such as the catalytic active structure of titanium-silicon molecular sieves, and developed short-wavelength chiral Raman spectroscopy technology for characterizing molecular chiral structure.
