The Beijing Winter Olympics have come to an end, but the Olympic spirit and ice and snow enthusiasm will never dissipate.

The legacy of the Beijing Winter Olympics is not produced after the end of the Games, but is constantly produced and fixed with seven years of preparation. In addition to the "tangible heritage", the "intangible heritage" such as spirit and culture brought about by the Winter Olympics is the wealth of China and the world.

Green Winter Olympic venues, low-carbon concept of science and technology, Olympic education, "300 million people on ice and snow" - these from China to the world, and will be passed on from the world to the next generation.

The Legacy of the Winter Olympics Dialogue With Professor Pei Dongguang: Olympic education needs to be integrated into the concept of education

Professor Pei Dongguang has devoted his life to Olympic education.

As the world's first "double Olympic city", what has Beijing's association with the Olympic Games brought to the world?

In addition to the Olympic venues that have influenced future generations, another valuable "Olympic legacy" is the "Beijing model" of Olympic education in China from 2008 to 2022, and the far-reaching impact of ice and snow sports.

In fact, when Olympic athletes from all over the world gather every four years to compete for gold and silver in the arena and show the beauty of competition, the IOC will also require each host city and host country to carry out Olympic education in its own Olympic cycle.

From the "Beijing model" from 2004 to 2008, and then from the dry land of ice and snow from 2018 to 2022, Olympic education has formed an effective model worth learning from the world in China's "double Olympic cycle" and has left valuable experience.

"After 2008, Beijing has realized the order of travel and traffic from outdoor environmental protection, which has undergone obvious changes and improvements, and this Winter Olympics has comprehensively improved environmental protection."

As a pioneer in the implementation of Olympic education in China and the winner of the "Vikelas Academic Achievement Award" of the IOC President's Award, Professor Pei Dongguang of the Capital Institute of Physical Education talked about the current situation and future direction of Olympic education in an exclusive interview with the surging reporter.

"Olympic education should be integrated into the concept of education and student-oriented, so that the inheritance of ideas can have an impact on society and be valuable."

The "Beijing Model" and the Global Implications of Ice and Snow Drylanding

What is Olympic education?

When the surging reporter threw this question to Professor Pei Dongguang, he first explained it with the concept of "father of the Olympic Games" Coubertin.

Coubertin, who was born in the French aristocracy, was originally to revive the Olympic Games for the purpose of education, using the sportsmanship of ancient Greece to educate French youth. Drawing on the balanced development of ancient Greece and the harmonious development of man, he mentioned his own idea that the future development of the world would not depend on political and economic prosperity, but would depend entirely on the orientation of education. ”

According to Professor Pei Dongguang, with the development of the Olympic Games for so many years, Olympic education is now "a social education activity for young people, using sports as the carrier to spread the Olympic spirit and culture to young people." ”

After Beijing successfully bid for the Summer Olympic Games in 2001, Beijing also launched the "Beijing 2008 Olympic Education Plan" in the Olympic cycle that began in 2004, and in the four years since, a new "Beijing model" has opened up "new ideas" for the promotion and development of Olympic education.

"Beijing pioneered the Olympic education demonstration school, and also learned from the way that Japan's Nagano promoted multiculturalism, carried out the international exchange activities of 'one heart knot', and organized a team of experts to conduct Olympic research, supplemented by colorful Olympic activities."

Pei Dongguang and Mr. Samaranch.

Pei Dongguang told the surging news reporter that these are the differences between the "Beijing model" and the previous Olympic education in various host cities.

At that time, Pei Dongguang compiled his Olympic education promotion work and experience from participating in the "Beijing Model" since around 2000 into a 20,000-word English paper, which was finally included in the Olympic authoritative collection and became the only Chinese paper in the collection of papers.

"This is the first time that Olympic education has been introduced from theory to practice to foreign countries." Professor Pei Dongguang was also invited to the Olympic Academy to tell the story of Olympic education and China to academic representatives from all over the world, "At that time, I was very proud to talk for an hour and a half. ”

The success of the "Beijing Model" has also laid the foundation for Olympic education in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Cycle. Due to the difference in seasons and events, Beijing and Zhangjiakou have produced a new model in the process of carrying out Olympic education – that is, the drylandization of ice and snow sports.

"For some students who don't see snow, it's really difficult to get on the ice and snow. But dryland ice and snow sports have technical similarities and can integrate Olympic education into it, allowing children to appreciate winter sports. ”

In Professor Pei Dongguang's view, the drylandization of ice and snow sports is only an important way to promote Olympic education in the Beijing Winter Olympic cycle, and it can become a boost in global promotion, "The drylandization of ice and snow sports is a contribution to winter Olympic education, and some countries in Africa can also use this way to promote Olympic education in the future." ”

Professor Pei Dongguang has been promoting the Olympic education concept.

"Olympic education should be integrated into the concept of education"

Of course, whether it is the Olympic education demonstration school of that year, or the international exchange activities of "concentric knots", or the drylanding of ice and snow sports today, it is all a variety of ways to promote Olympic education, and its ultimate purpose is to let the Olympic spirit "take root" in the minds of young people, forming a life attitude of loving sports, respecting others, pursuing excellence, physical and mental harmony, and fair competition.

As an educator who has dedicated 30 years to the research and promotion of Olympic education, Pei Dongguang believes that the real Olympic education needs to change in the concept of education, advocating the people-oriented, student-oriented education spirit, "the inheritance of ideas and the inheritance of educational concepts, I think it can have an impact on society, only then can it be valuable." ”

It is precisely because of this educational concept that Professor Pei Dongguang even brought Olympic education to the juvenile detention center around 2008.

He still remembers that when he gave the children of the juvenile detention center an Olympic education and let them watch the Olympic flame relay, many of them stood there and couldn't help but cry, "In fact, the reason is not difficult to understand, they feel respected, and naturally deepened their ideas of wanting to change." ”

So how to integrate Olympic education into China's concept of education?

Professor Pei Dongguang admits that this is a long-term process, but from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Professor Pei Dongguang also saw that several schools have made successful attempts at "integration".

One of them is Yangfangdian Central Primary School in Beijing's Haidian District. On May 10, 20 years ago, Professor Pei Dongguang, who had just begun to promote Olympic education in China, and the whole school completed China's first simulated Olympic Games together with all the teachers and students of the school. In the following 13 years, Yangfangdian Primary School held 13 consecutive simulated Olympic Games, and after that it was changed to "Olympic Festival" to spread the spiritual core and values of the Olympics.

Another school that touched Professor Pei Dongguang was the Power Plant Road Primary School in Shijingshan District. "The principal of Power Plant Road Primary School, Xue Dong, was born as a physical education teacher, and he put forward a big point of view at that time, to integrate Olympic education into the concept of big education." Professor Pei Dongguang told the surging news reporter that President Xue Dong is also trying to practice this concept in various ways.

As a school with only 300 students, Power Plant Road Elementary School held a simulated Winter Paralympic Winter Games before the Winter Olympics, making a variety of winter Olympic equipment, and then allowing students to experience first-hand how difficult it is to exercise "in physical difficulty".

"They organize such activities themselves so that children can experience the difficulties of people with disabilities." In Professor Pei Dongguang's view, this is also an effective way for children to understand Olympism, "The three core values of Olympism are excellence, respect and friendship, and these ideas are deeply rooted in the hearts of each child, so that sustainable development is possible." ”

How to sustain Olympic education in the "post-Olympic era"

The "sustainable development" mentioned by Professor Pei Dongguang is actually the shortcomings that most Olympic host cities and host countries that he has realized in the process of promoting Olympic education in the past 30 years.

Professor Pei Dongguang frankly said that the "sustainable problem" of Olympic education is not in the agreement between the International Olympic Organizing Committee and the bidding cities, but only continuous and in-depth promotion can make China's physical education more sound and perfect.

"Like Yangfangdian Primary School, which can put the simulated Olympic Games for 13 sessions, very few, many Olympic education demonstration schools after the Olympic Games, all kinds of activities remember that Ben stopped."

Professor Pei Dongguang believes that the failure to achieve curriculum is one of the reasons why Olympic education is difficult to be "sustainable" in promoting, "We want to leave the cultural heritage of the Olympic Games, but in what form, that is, the implementation of curriculum." ”

In recent years, Professor Pei Dongguang and his team have compiled the "Olympic Reader" set of books based on the "Olympic Values Education Basic Manual" published by the International Olympic Committee as an outline, which mainly subjects the Olympic Games, and four sets of books are aimed at different ages. ”

Of course, curriculum is only one way for Pei Dongguang to continue to promote Olympic education. He is also working on video interpretations and experimenting with courseware to help school teachers integrate Olympic education into the discipline.

In addition to the sustainability of Olympic education, its popularity in the future is also one of the goals that Professor Pei Dongguang hopes to achieve, including young athletes in addition to young students, and even professional athletes.

"The Olympic education crowd should also include young athletes as well as athletes participating in the Olympics, but we are not doing this now, we are only in school. It's a shame we didn't do. ”

Professor Pei Dongguang added with the definition of Olympism that the central idea of Olympism is the harmonious development of people, emphasizing sports as a way to achieve harmonious development of people, and emphasizing the exemplary role of Olympians.

"Athletes are idols of teenagers, and their words and deeds are not simple ordinary people, such as their hard work, never giving up, and their positive and ambitious pursuits, which are all cases of adolescent learning." Professor Pei Dongguang said.

Professor Pei Dongguang is also quite optimistic about the future of Olympic education in China, "education must eventually fall on children, with the help of the Winter Olympics, Olympic education has entered more and more schools, and various channels are also being publicized, and gradually will make up for the previous regrets." ”
