According to the recall announcement, the recalled models involve domestic Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will recall some of the domestically produced Model 3 (12,003 units) and Model Y (14,044 units) electric vehicles produced between December 28, 2020 and January 15, 2022, for a total of 26,047 units.
The reason for the recall is that the electronic expansion valve of the heat pump in some vehicles will move slightly when positioning, because the software (version 2021.44 to 2021.44.30.6) has no correction function, which may cause the valve to be partially opened in the long run, the heat pump compressor to stop working, and the heating function in the car to fail. In the above state, especially when the temperature outside the car is lower than minus 10 degrees, the windshield defrosting system cannot achieve the defrosting effect stipulated by the relevant national laws and regulations, and the decline of the defrost function adversely affects the driver's field of vision, thereby increasing the possibility of collision risk of the vehicle when driving in cold weather, and there is a safety hazard.
In view of the above defects, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will upgrade the software for the vehicles within the scope of the recall through the vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology, and the user can complete the recall without going to the store; for the vehicle that cannot be recalled through the car remote upgrade (OTA) technology, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will contact the relevant users through the Tesla service center to upgrade the software for the vehicle free of charge to eliminate the safety hazards.
Judging from the recall announcement, the number of domestic Model 3 and Model Y models recalled by Tesla exceeded 26,000, but most of them could be solved through OTAs, that is, the reason for the recall was a software problem, not a hardware problem, in fact, in the past Tesla recall, there was also a situation in which product defects were solved through OTA.
It is understood that some Tesla owners in North America and Canada also reflected the above same failures some time ago, according to reports, since January this year, the Canadian transportation department has received a number of complaints, users said that their Tesla can not operate the air conditioner normally, especially in the cold environment of -10 °C, the heat pump air conditioner is not heated, and Tesla is also upgraded through OTA. On Feb. 9, Tesla filed a recall with the National Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA): Tesla will recall 26,681 vehicles in the U.S. due to software errors that could lead to degraded windshield defrost performance, including model S and Model X produced between 2021 and 2022, Model 3 for the period 2017-2022, and Model Y for the period 2020-2022.
Earlier, on June 26, 2021, Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled some imported Model 3 electric vehicles manufactured between January 12, 2019 and November 27, 2019, for a total of 35,665 electric vehicles; Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled some domesticAlly produced Model 3 electric vehicles produced between December 19, 2019 and June 7, 2021, for a total of 211256. Recall some of the domestically produced Model Y electric vehicles manufactured between January 1, 2021 and June 7, 2021, for a total of 38,599 units. Its solution is also to solve the defect through OTA to eliminate security risks.
The recall is due to the problem of the vehicle's active cruise control system, which is easy to cause the driver to mistakenly activate the active cruise function in the following situations: when the vehicle is in D gear, the driver dials the right control lever again to try to switch gears; when the vehicle makes a sharp turn, the driver mistakenly touches and dials the right control lever. After the active cruise control is activated by mistake, if the cruise speed set by the vehicle is not the current speed, and the current speed is lower than the set speed, the vehicle will accelerate to the set speed, and the sudden increase in vehicle speed will affect the driver's expectations and lead to a misjudgment of vehicle control, which may lead to a collision of the vehicle in extreme cases, and there is a safety hazard.
