With the deterioration of the semiconductor supply situation in the United States, Hyundai Motor allegedly sent executives to Phoenix, Arizona, earlier this week to check the specific situation.

According to BusinessKorea, Phoenix is a gathering place for American semiconductor companies, and Hyundai Motor will negotiate with semiconductor companies to ensure semiconductor supply.

Modern cars have encountered difficulties in securing the power device MOSFETs that act as current control switches. In fact, almost all electronic devices, such as smartphones, computers, and cars, require this device.

Unlike MCUs, where shortages have received a lot of attention, MOSFETs are not expensive as a base device. However, with the long-term difficulty in chip supply, even this basic device is in short supply.

Because MOSFETs control the flow of electricity, electric vehicles use more MOSFETs than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. Therefore, due to the insufficient supply of MOSFETs, Hyundai's electrification strategy may be affected.

Industry insiders predict that the chip shortage will last longer than expected. A relevant person in the semiconductor industry said: "By the third quarter of this year (July to September), it will be difficult to fundamentally solve the chip problem." In particular, semiconductor companies are not making large-scale investments in semiconductor production facilities for automotive systems. (Proofreading/Hidden Drei)
