However, once a son of heaven and a courtier, how did they spend their time in this prison tailor-made for them?
Shen Zui, as an important witness of Gongdelin, recorded some anecdotes in his memoirs "What the War Criminals Saw and Heard", among which the deeds of Wang Yaowu and Fan Hanjie are the most fascinating, and Shen Zui's incomprehension can be felt from these words: Wang Yaowu is always bullied, why does Fan Hanjie dare to provoke?
1. The "admission ticket" of Gongdelin
Speaking of drunkenness, his life story is also quite legendary. At first, he could not enter Gongdelin because of his insufficient status, but was imprisoned in an ordinary prison in Chongqing, but because of the fact that his crimes were too numerous to mention, he aroused the resentment of local officials and residents, and was targeted and suppressed by many parties.
He is not the master of being bullied, he will not be obedient when he behaves perversely, stirring up the miasma in the local prison, and the upper management decided to bring Shen Zui to Beijing Gongdelin after consultation.
Back in 1932, Shen Zui, who was an adult, was introduced by an acquaintance and successfully entered the secret service of the Fuxing Society, and since then he has started his career as an agent, and has frequently participated in spy operations, and has been appointed as the head of the major operation team, the colonel of the inspection department and other intelligence positions.
In the social concept at that time, "spy" was a very shameless and hateful word, coupled with the artistic processing of "spy" in many literary reviews, his image of ill-intentioned and treason against the enemy was even more deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.
But because his work was not military or political, he had little say in the circles of the upper leaders, and he was regarded as a spy boss with the blood of communists on his hands, a heinous demon who stood in opposition to the people. There is another hidden reason why Shen Zui became a war criminal, and it was the hatred of all social classes for "spies" that directly pushed Shen Zui to prison.
At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, in November 1949, after the People's Liberation Army put down the rebellion in Guangxi, Yunnan became the next target. At this time, the Kuomintang led by Chiang Kai-shek was losing ground over the mainland, and the Kuomintang regime was crumbling in the war of liberation in full swing in New China.
Before leaving, he appointed Lu Han as interim commander to take over the main military jurisdiction in Yunnan. During his reign, Lu Han rapidly developed his armament and armed forces, but when the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party entered a white-hot phase, Lu Han began to rethink his position, and it became clear that following Chiang Kai-shek in the twilight was not a clear move.
At this time of dilemma, he was afraid that he would not be able to govern alone even in this small frontier place, so he submitted a surrender letter to the People's Liberation Army, broke away from the control of Chiang Kai-shek's forces, and Yunnan was successfully reunified in this uprising.
At the same time, Lu Han also provided a list to the Communists, and Shen Zui was also listed as an important member of the Kuomintang military command, and was later imprisoned in the Chongqing War Criminals Management Center, and later moved to Gongdelin. Shen Zui, who came to Gongdelin, assigned two roommates, one of whom was Wang Yaowu.
In 1926, Wang Yaowu graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy, and then entered the National Revolutionary Army, successively serving as a second lieutenant platoon commander, second lieutenant company commander, and was promoted to division commander after many encirclements and suppressions of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Wang Yaowu participated in the civil war many times under the arrangement of the Kuomintang.
In September 1948, the East China Field Army launched the Jinan Campaign, after eight days and eight nights of fierce fighting, the 180,000-strong national army captured the city of Jinan, I thought I could sit back and relax, but there was chaos within the national army, Wu Huawen defected and launched a mutiny, Wang Yaowu was unexpected, so he could only give up the duck in his hand, and began to flee after changing his disguise.
However, when he traveled to the territory of Shouguang, he was found and escorted to Gongdelin, where he later met Shen Zui. Fan Hanjie, like Wang Yaowu, graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy, performed well in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and held important positions in the Nationalist Army, but was captured by the People's Liberation Army in the Liaoshen Campaign in 1948 and entered the Gongdelin War Criminals Detention Center with Wang Yaowu.
In the areas ruled by the Kuomintang, factional struggles emerged one after another, land reform was ineffective, and the military and government were corrupt, and the support of the masses of the people was gradually lost, and its destruction was the trend of the times. The arrest of Wang Yaowu, Fan Hanjie and others, who were influential and important in the national army in the past, is also fateful.
Those who know the times are handsome, and not standing in the right line in troubled times can mean being ruined, but the Communists have a soft policy towards prisoners of war during the Civil War, and only build special prisons to reform them.
2. What song to sing on what mountain
As the saying goes, what song is sung on what mountain, and what Buddha is worshiped in what temple.
Wang Yaowu and Fan Hanjie are well versed in it, and they have put on a protective color for themselves in this mixed merit forest, but their behavior is very different, and others are incomprehensible, but they rely on their wisdom to "rise and thrive" in the merit forest.
In Shen Zui's view, Wang Yaowu's personality is weak and deceitful, everyone can come up and step on it, this is a normal phenomenon in the eyes of others, but they don't know that behind this honest face there is a way to survive in the world.
As a high-ranking official within the Kuomintang, Wang Yaowu is a rare person who understands, he is clearly aware of the changes in his situation, and adheres to the attitude of "what has come is what is safe" and actively transforms in the merit forest.
Under his efforts, he was promoted to a study committee, but at the same time, he was also ill-intentioned by other war criminals, and the people imprisoned in the merit forest were people who had licked the blood of the knife on the battlefield, and there were many people with violent temperaments, and Wang Yaowu, who was like a "good student", naturally would not be kind to him.
Gongdelin is another battlefield where there is no gunsmoke, some people can't get used to what Wang Yaowu is doing, and want to secretly make a stumbling block pull him into the water, but Wang Yaowu rarely speaks, is bullied and does not fight back, and does not give those people any opportunity to take advantage of.
However, there are only a thousand days to be a thief, how can there be a thousand days to prevent thieves, Wang Yaowu, who has always been cautious, said that he liked Guan Yu when discussing "Three Kingdoms" with others, but soon realized that he had said the wrong thing, and quickly corrected that he should not like rebellious ministers and thieves, and he will only like Zhuge Liang in the future.
This insignificant unintentional mistake was still reported by someone with a heart, and at worst, it was a serious violation of the political position, but the upper leadership of Gongdelin did not punish him after knowing about it.
The unwilling villain began to slander Wang Yaowu again, claiming that he said things like nostalgia for the Kuomintang in his sleep, but after the leader found out, he said to those people: "Even if he really said this in his dream, it doesn't mean anything, and the dream talk is not a person's real consciousness." ”
The high level of trust in Wang Yaowu from the upper echelons gradually made some people give up suppressing him, which is precisely due to Wang Yaowu's honest character. The fame and fortune of the past are not enough for outsiders, and all kinds of past events are like passing clouds and disappearing.
Ye Lisan was Wang Yaowu's right-hand man and confidant, and when he first visited Wang Yaowu in prison, he saluted with the highest ceremony, Wang Yaowu waved his hand and stopped him: "Now there is no chief here, I am just an ordinary person." His humility has become his passport to walk in Gongdelin, and his pattern of bending and stretching is his unique secret to being like a fish in water in Gongdelin.
One day, there was a problem with the coal fire in Gongdelin, and the person in charge had no choice but to explain to them that the meal was an hour late, but his arrogant and provocative attitude angered Liu Anguo, a diehard among the war criminals, and he threw down the dishes and chopsticks and began to make trouble, surrounded by fanning the flames.
At this critical moment, Wang Yaowu took the initiative to stand up and clean up the mess scattered on the ground, the atmosphere full of gunpowder was alleviated, and Liu Anguo also quieted down the steps he handed over. In this way, Wang Yaowu always disregarded personal gains and losses to resolve conflicts between war criminals and the People's Liberation Army, which also laid the foundation for him to become the first batch of amnesty war criminals in Gongdelin in the future.
His kindness is not a temporary disguise, as early as the Battle of Jinan has begun to take shape, when the war is about to be completely defeated, when other large and small armies are too busy to take care of themselves, Wang Yaowu released all the political war criminals and evacuated the innocent people in the rear, although captured, but his merits are still praised by Chairman Mao: "Meritorious service, past is excessive, the Communist Party will always remember his deeds, and the people will not forget." ”
3. Thorns all over the body - the best protective color
If Wang Yaowu's humble and weak personality is his way of life, then the bullying Fan Hanjie is the opposite, he is better at showing a cynical attitude to protect himself, and whoever provokes him will bite back.
The two have diametrically opposed attitudes in the merit forest, but they have different paths, and sometimes being covered with thorns can also be a way to protect themselves. As Chiang Kai-shek's old subordinate, Fan Hanjie followed the Kuomintang from the time of the Northern Expedition, and won the favor of Chiang Kai-shek with his extraordinary talents.
Except for a small number of criminals who committed the most heinous crimes, they were sentenced to death, and other war criminals generally adopted a preferential treatment policy, focusing on reform. Fan Hanjie knew that he would not die, and in order to live in peace, he made himself an unprovoked character, keeping other war criminals who tried to provoke him away.
Once, they were asked to fill out a family situation form, and when it was Fan Hanjie's turn, he made a mistake, and his attitude of refusal to obey gave the officer a great headache, and he was still indifferent to the officer's strong request and threatened, and even said that he had six wives and a bunch of children, and the officer had no choice but to give up.
Fan Hanjie's behavior in Gongdelin revealed unsociability everywhere, and over time, no one was willing to deal with it anymore, although this was exactly what Fan Hanjie wanted. No wonder Shen Zui was confused by this, Fan Hanjie's words and deeds are very understandable, and he is a maverick who spends his time in prison in peace.
It wasn't until he and Wang Yaowu got the first batch of amnesty together that Shen Zui finally saw the "crooked ways" in it. As a fierce general in the anti-Japanese battlefield, he can never be frivolous, on the contrary, he is a resourceful and brave man, and he has opened up a broad path for himself in the merit forest.
It is true that Shen Zui, Wang Yaowu and Fan Hanjie were imprisoned for a day, but in the face of adversity, they created a new future for themselves in their own completely different ways. Lilu's fame is a smile, life is not needed for wealth and fame, and the fame and dung are dust.
Even though the past was prosperous and charming, with the comprehensive liberation of China by the Communist Party, everything has come to naught and disappeared in the torrent of history, and they have to admit their current situation and conform to the trend of the times in order to let themselves go further.
