Recently, the carbon fiber independently developed and produced by Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical was successfully applied to the "Bay Area Blue" high-speed train of Guangzhou Metro Line 18. The operation data shows that the performance of the train head cover using carbon fiber composite material is fully in line with the operating conditions, and the weight can be reduced by up to 35%-40% compared with the aluminum alloy material of the same module, which effectively helps the train to reduce weight and speed.

It is reported that Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical also put on a carbon fiber "coat" for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics torch," which is the world's first realization of the production of an Olympic torch shell with carbon fiber composite materials, which solves the technical problems of high temperature resistance when the torch is burned with hydrogen fuel, so that it has the characteristics of "light, solid, and beautiful", and can be used normally in the hydrogen combustion environment above 800 degrees Celsius.

Carbon fiber is a high-strength new fiber material with a carbon content of more than 95%, excellent mechanical properties, the quality is a quarter of steel, the strength is seven to nine times that of steel, and also has the characteristics of corrosion resistance, known as the "king of new materials", also known as "black gold", can be widely used in aircraft components, rail transit raw materials, body manufacturing, etc., in all walks of life has a wide range of application prospects.

It is understood that Guangzhou Metro Line 18 is known as the fastest subway in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with a maximum speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour, and the "Bay Area Blue" train that serves as an operation task is the first subway train in China with a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber composite material for the hood. Since 2019, Sinopec and CRRC have carried out collaborative innovation, overcome the key core technologies of carbon fiber composites in the field of rail transit, established a complete technology research and development system, formed the world's leading "one-stop" lightweight technology solution, and finally realized the successful application of carbon fiber composites on the "Bay Area Blue" train.

In the next step, Sinopec carbon fiber will also be applied on the train of Guangzhou Metro Line 22. In addition, the R&D team of Sinopec and CRRC is also actively carrying out carbon fiber composite material technology research applied to higher performance grade models such as 400 km per hour high-speed trains and maglev trains, opening up a broader field for the development of the industrial chain of carbon fiber and its composite materials in the mainland.

Carbon fiber technology has strict technical barriers, Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical is the earliest domestic research and development of carbon fiber and industrial production of enterprises. As early as 2012, the company used the self-developed carbon fiber complete set technology to produce 12K small tow carbon fiber. In 2018, the company successfully trial-produced 48K large-tow carbon fiber with international advanced level. It is reported that Sinopec has independent intellectual property rights to develop carbon fiber technology, and currently ranks first in China and third in the world.
