The new star of display technology, Mini LED, has not performed well, but the potential is huge

If the hottest technology in 2021 is what, it must be Mini LED, including Samsung, TCL, Hisense and other big brands are actively laying out the Mini LED TV field. Although the Momentum of Mini LED is huge, the performance of Mini LED, which has been given high hopes, is not as good as expected, and the entire tea leaves have fallen into "empty joy".

2021 is known as the first year of commercial use of the display industry, Apple launched heavyweight Mini LED related products, Samsung, TCL, Skyworth, Hisense, Konka and other TV brands have launched Mini LED TV products, the competition is becoming increasingly fierce, coupled with the addition of Huawei, Xiaomi, the giant opened the road, Mini LED track has become lively.

The new star of display technology, Mini LED, has not performed well, but the potential is huge

In 2021, Samsung Electronics launched a series of 50-85-inch mid-to-high-end 4K and flagship 55-inch 8KMini LED TVs, which exceeded the million level in the first year of shipment, reaching 1.5 million units. And the three-star quantum dot Mini LED TV has become the absolute darling of the high-end market and is loved by consumers.

TCL has achieved mass production of Mini LED TVs in 2019, and has launched a number of Mini LED smart screen series products so far. Its C12 series of positioning set home appliances is loved by consumers and is a new representative of the integration of multiple screens in the family; the X12 series Mini LED Lingyao Smart Screen is the benchmark of the industry's high-end flagship.

Since the release of the first Mini LED TV in February last year, Skyworth launched the 75-inch and 86-inch Mini LED TV Q72 in September, trying to lay out the Mini LED field. Although Skyworth's strength in the OLED field is beyond doubt, it also performs well in the Mini LED field.

In addition to the Mini LED TV, Konka also released the first Mini LED backlit display and cinema Mini LED screen in 2021. Hisense launched the Mini LED TV 85U9H equipped with a self-developed 8K picture quality chip at ces2022. In addition, Huawei and Xiaomi have also launched new smart TVs with Mini LED backlighting.

It is not difficult to find that 2021 is the hottest year for the entire Mini LED market. At present, Mini LED is in the period of capacity expansion, upstream chip materials, midstream panels and downstream terminals are poised to develop, and the market pattern is accelerating.

According to AVC revo data, the global Mini LED TV shipments in 2021 will be 1.5 million units, although there is a huge leap compared with 2020, but it only reaches half of the brand manufacturer's target of 3 million units in early 2021. Although the current Mini LED technology has been relatively mature, but subject to cost factors and differentiated consumer demand, Mini LED backlight products are the first to be applied to the high-end market segment.

Although mini LED shipments in 2021 are average, its development potential is very large.

Technically speaking, Mini LED is a new backlight design led technology, theoretically or backlit display LCD TV, Mini LED inherits the inorganic LED high efficiency, high brightness, high reliability and fast reflection time and other characteristics; secondly, with energy saving, simple mechanism, small size, thin and other advantages. Compared with the traditional LED backlight, it can achieve a lot of backlight partitioning, which can achieve accurate area light emission adjustment and improve the display effect.

At present, the growth rate of the high-end TV market is limited, the mainstream of shipments is still dominated by LCD TVs, but the mainstream LCD TV price war is still very severe, TV brands in order to get rid of the price war, will choose to do something to achieve differentiated competition.

The growth of the high-end market is insufficient, the price war in the low-end market is severe, and the Mini LED backlit TV has become the preferred layout object. One is to improve the picture quality performance of ordinary LCD TVs and tap the surplus value of LCD TVs; the other is to get rid of the whirlpool of low-price competition and move towards the middle and high-end.

Yang Fan, founder of The People's Home Grid, said: "The traditional LCD TV premium space is insufficient, mini LED TV fills the gap in the mid-end market, helps LCD TVs to play the greatest value, and also makes quantum dot TVs have a qualitative improvement." However, the current price of Mini LED TVs is still too high, which is also one of the important reasons why Mini LED has not formed a scale effect. However, as more and more brands join the popularity of Mini LED, Mini LED TVs will also become as mainstream as ordinary LCD TVs. ”

According to the TrendForce Jibang Consulting Survey, the annual growth rate of Mini LED TVs will double in 2022, and shipments will challenge 4.5 million units.
