The Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who is familiar with us, has made a new move, and the old Nintendo headquarters building in Kyoto has been transformed into a design hotel "Marufuku Building (まるふくろう)", which was supposed to open in the summer of 2021 but was postponed due to the epidemic, and is currently scheduled to open in April this year. After that, the trip to Kyoto will add another punching point. Although the hotel has not yet opened, the pictures have been spoiled in advance, so let's feast our eyes first.

Regarding the name of the hotel "Marufuku Building (まるふくろう)", the mystery is actually on the surface of the mystery, and it has historical origins.
In 1947, Nintendo Yamauchi, the predecessor of Nintendo, established a subsidiary" "Marunfuku Co., Ltd." to sell playing cards, hanaza, carota, etc. Yamauchi Nintendo once used the name "Nintendo Dominoes".
The building was both the office of Marufuku Corporation from 1947 to 1959 and the residence of the Yamauchi family, the founder of Nintendo. Nowadays, the hotel is named after the "Marufuku Building", which has a profound commemorative significance, and the word "Fu" can be seen everywhere in many corners of the building.
Maruphiro-ri is located in 342-banji, Tōkamogawa-nishito-Yomiyacho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, just a 6-minute drive from Kyoto Station, and there are many old buildings nearby.
The renovation of this old Showa building brought in Tadao Ando, the winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, who was also born during the Showa period. He has always regarded the rebirth of historic buildings as an opportunity and a challenge, allowing the new to dialogue and balance the old, and last year's renovation of the Pinot Collection of the Paris Stock Exchange attracted the attention of the world.

The Marumfuku-hotel, which was transformed by Tadao Ando, consists of two parts, one is the original building building, and the other is the new building designed by Tadao Ando, connecting the old and new buildings, and this supplement is now common in the renovation and rebirth of old buildings in Japan.
The original building remains almost as it was, while the new one pays homage to the nostalgic and timeless aesthetics of the original building, blending the old with the style of the present.
Walking into this former Nintendo headquarters site, although there is no Mario waiting for the IP we are familiar with today to wait for welcome, you can feel the original starting point of Nintendo. The architectural style and fresh temperament of the Showa era are fixed here, and the nearly ninety years of time have not rushed to follow the footsteps of the times.

The tile decoration and wallpaper texture reveal the aesthetic attitude of a card company, and the hotel where Kyoto's old buildings are reborn is not small, and Marufukuro competes in it with its own unique temperament.
From the inside out, many details are worth staying in Marufuku-ro. During the Showa period, glass craftsmanship developed, and in the Marukofuku Building, stained glass windows appeared as decorations, with eye-catching colors and geometric beauty.
There are 18 rooms in the entire Marupobo Building, of which 7 are deluxe suites, all rooms are between 33-78 square meters in size and priced at around 100,000-230,000 yen per night, and can be booked on the official website from January 20 this year.

Regarding the rebirth of Maruko Fukuro, in addition to the designer Tadao Ando, I have to mention the planning and operation company behind Plan Do See, who found Tadao Ando to design it.
There are many examples of the rebirth of old buildings in the projects run by Plan Do See, although not all of them are masterpieces like Tadao Ando, and they are also worth taking a look at by old architecture enthusiasts.
The Sodoh
The rebirth of the master painter's mansion
At the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka's five-storied pagoda, and Kodai-ji Temple surround a 5,600-square-meter Japanese garden, The Sodoh, an Italian restaurant that can host weddings and banquets, and Higashiyama-do, the former residence of Japanese painter Takeuchi Shuho.
With a love of Kyoto, Takeuchi built this "masterpiece of beauty" in 1929, with a low-key exterior and four distinct seasons in the park, which abbreviates the meaning of Kyoto into the garden.

The rebirth of the company building
In 1927, the modern architect Takeda Wuyi designed the former head office building of the Shimazu Manufacturing Institute in the center of Kyoto. Like Maruko-ro, it is also an old Kyoto building from the Showa period, and in 2012, the building that accompanied the development of Kyoto city was transformed into a new space that integrates restaurants, wedding venues, and meeting places, FORTUNE GARDEN KYOTO.
Similar to The Marufuku Building, the Kyoto Fortune Garden today also retains the old sign of the "Shimazu Manufacturing House", and the arched main entrance and round window glass specially designed by Takeda May 1st are still there, preserving the architectural beauty of the time. Even if the interior space changes, it is still extremely valuable.
Walking into the well-groomed Kyoto Fortune Garden, there are actually holes in the interior, and the green Kyoto garden landscape is hidden in the Showa buildings in the center of the city. The garden is named "Lucky Luck を年ける庭 (Good Luck Garden)", where koi play in the water, bamboo forests cover, and sunlight flows.
Between the bamboo gardens, Kyoto Fortune Garden has a French-style bistro with seasonal ingredients to create delicious dishes. In the summer, when the breeze blows, the rooftop tavern is open at night.
The Kyoto Fortune Garden also features Kawaramachi Otomiya Hall, one of the largest independent churches in Kyoto, where you can feel the retro and modern style of the early Showa period.
