Toshiba announces HDD roadmap: 30TB version released in 2023 Will launch larger capacity in the future

According to foreign media reports, Toshiba President and CEO Hiroyuki Sato announced a roadmap for Toshiba's next-generation hard drives.

In the announced roadmap, Toshiba plans to release a 30TB mechanical hard drive in 2023, a version with a 35TB capacity in 2025, and a capacity greater than 40TB in 2026.

It is understood that the new high-capacity HDD will use FC-MAMR (flux control - microwave auxiliary magnetic recording), MAS-MAMR (microwave auxiliary switching - microwave auxiliary magnetic recording) and other technologies. In the future, Toshiba may use HAMR (ThermalLy Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology in its largest drives.

According to to the information released by Toshiba, MAS-MAMR technology will use microwaves to change the magnetic coercivity of the hard disk media even more, making the track narrower, thereby increasing the area density. The project was jointly developed by Showa Denko, TDK and Toshiba as part of the MAMR technology.

Toshiba said it will work closely with cloud service providers to understand their capacity and performance requirements, and Toshiba's next-generation technology is key to meeting customer needs.
