Toshiba unveiled a new HDD roadmap, and the 30TB hard drive will arrive in fiscal year 2023

Toshiba recently held an investor relations event in Tokyo, Japan, and Hiroyuki Sato, President and CEO of Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Corporation (TDSC), announced a roadmap for Toshiba's next-generation hard drives. Data continues to grow at double-digit rates every year, and the need for data storage in the cloud is driving the need for higher capacity drives. To meet the surge in market demand, Toshiba plans to use its proprietary technologies, including FC-MAMR (Flux Control - Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology, MAS-MAMR (Microwave Assisted Switching - Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology and disk stacking technology, to increase the hard disk capacity to 30TB or even higher by fiscal year 2023 (April 2023 to March 2024).

Toshiba said it will work closely with cloud service providers to understand their capacity and performance requirements, and Toshiba's next-generation technology is key to meeting customer needs. Toshiba's years of close collaboration with major component suppliers have had a profound impact on technological breakthroughs, ultimately reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of its hard drives as hard drive capacity increases.

According to previously published information, Toshiba's MAS-MAMR technology will use microwaves to change the magnetic coercivity of the hard disk media even more, making the track narrower, thereby increasing the area density. The project was jointly developed by Showa Electric (Dielectric), TDK (a read-write head equipped with a dual spin jet layer) and Toshiba (a driver) as part of THE MAMR technology.

Toshiba currently offers a comprehensive line of hard drives to meet the storage needs of the enterprise, data center, surveillance, and client markets. Its hard drives are targeted at four market segments, with the AL series focused on enterprise-class performance areas; the MG series targeting enterprise-class capacity and data center needs; the MQ series covering mobile clients and a wide range of usage scenarios; and the DT series targeting surveillance and traditional desktop client applications. In 2021, Toshiba hard drive and Exabyte shipments increased by 4% and 61%, respectively, to 54.68 million blocks and 187.24 Exabytes.
