Toshiba showcases a new magnetic recording technology: mechanical hard drives easily exceed 30TB

In order to increase the capacity of mechanical hard disks, Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba and other manufacturers have made sufficient efforts over the years to propose a variety of new storage technologies.

Recently, Toshiba announced the new "MAS-MAMR", the full name "Microwave Assisted Switching-Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording", that is, microwave assisted switching microwave assisted magnetic recording technology, and made the first demonstration.

Toshiba has been committed to the research and development of MAMR (Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology, and last year began shipping 18TB hard drives based on FC-MAMR technology, including the mainstream X300 series and the N300 series for NAS network storage, using spin torque oscillators to assist recording, storage density of 1.5Tb per square inch, single disc capacity of 2TB.

ON THE BASIS-MAMR, ON THE BASIS OF FC-MAMR, FURTHER IMPROVES THE STORAGE DENSITY BY EXPOSING MICROWAVES TO THE STORAGE MEDIUM LOCALLY.

Toshiba said the MAS-MAMR technology could achieve 30TB capacity of mechanical hard drives, but did not disclose the specific storage density and when it will be commercially available.

The technology was developed jointly by Toshiba, disc maker Showa Electric (SDK) and head manufacturer TDK.
