Wonderful Digest: Excerpt from "The White Elephant in the Sea"

The other side of the ocean is still brightly lit, like a mirage shining in the night.

Wave after wave of tides, with mysterious power, devoured the white elephant in the hearts of the strangers

Every time I drive on Long Island Highway 495, a gentle sadness rises in my heart, and this time too.

Driving to See My Dad on Cold Water Street, the cause was that Peter Leung, a police officer in Dong Egg Town, called me, "Your dad defaulted on his mortgage from the bank and threatened the police with a gun." Peter Leung used to be my high school classmate and first love boyfriend. After answering the phone, I couldn't go to work anymore, so I immediately took a leave of absence and drove to Long Island.

East Egg is at the easternmost tip of South Hamptonshire on Long Island, and on the map is a long Native Indian name. But everyone called it East Egg, East Egg, and the 495 highway into that area was immediately like entering a desert island, and even gas stations on both sides of the road were rare. Not far from the road is the sea, and between the sea and the road is a large gray river, the Pelican River. The banks of the river are covered with dense trees, and white herons and seagulls fly from the top of the trees. In winter, the trees on both sides of the river run out of leaves, and the wind from the sea whistles through the brown woods and blows to the highway, bringing white snow and dust.

The Pelican River runs through most of the island and finally flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The place into the sea is called Pelican Bay, where there are inaccessible beaches covered with large and small round pebbles. In the first few years of immigrating from Wuxi to New York, in the summer, our family of three always came to Pelican Bay on weekends, parking was free, and the chairs on the beach were free... It is the cheapest place to spend the summer. Years later, Pelican Bay was the only way I drove to See My Dad on Cold Water Street.

My father was nearly seventy years old, and I imagined him in front of the cottage on Cold Water Street, carrying a Remington rifle on his right shoulder, wearing the old sweatshirt that was neither black nor black and blue, with his thin legs slightly circled, his pants wrinkled, his waist pinned with a tape measure, and his hair-turning boots were covered with white paint and ash... This elderly migrant worker looks like Flushing everywhere, and he still wants to confront the police like this?
